To all whom i2 may concern:

Be it known that I, SARA EBERLY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Continental, in the county of Putnam and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Model-Slip Holders, of which the following is a specification.

This invention appertains to the art of writing, being designed most especially to assist the pupil in obtaining a correct idea as to form by providing for having the model close to the writing and serving to cover the copy previously made.

The invention consists more particularly of the means for holding the slip upon which the matter appears to be patterned after by the pupil, the holder being of such formation as to admit of the model-slip being easily and readily substituted by another, either by being covered, by being removed, or by being interchanged with another of a pile of model s 1ps.

The invention contemplates a holder for the model-slip which will be rigid to keep the same extended, which will be sufficiently heavy not to be readily displaced, and which will be flat to admit of the model-slip lying close to the surface, paper or slate, upon which the copies are to be written.

The holder consists chiefly of a plate, preferably of sheet metal, of a size to receive the model-slip, and elastic bands near the ends of the plate to confine the model-slip, said elastic bands in a modification of the invention serving to prevent slipping of the holder by contact with the paper or surface upon which the device may be placed.

The invention further consists of the novel features, details of construction, and combinations of the parts which hereinafter will be more fully described, illustrated, and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a detail view showing-the applicatlon of the invention. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the holder, the model-slip being removed. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section of'an end portion of the holder. Fig. 4 is a detail view of the end portion of a modification. Fig. 5 is a section on the line ac a: of Fig. 4. Fig. 6 is a section on the line y y of Fig. 4.

Corresponding and like parts are referred toin the following description and indicated in the several views of the drawings by the same reference characters.

The holder 1 is oblong and flat and preferably of metal, and of a size corresponding approximately to the model-slip 2 to be confined thereon. Elastic bands 3 are provided near the ends of the holder for confining the model-slip, and may be secured thereto in any manner which will admit of their substitution by others when worn or otherwise unfitted for further effective service.

The holder consists of a plate, and its end portions are bent upon themselves, as shown at 4, to provide rests to elevate the holder and prevent blotting or smearing of the writin when moving the holder thereover after t e completion of a line. These rests or bent ends 4 also serve to prevent outward displacement of the elastic bands.

Retaining means are employed to limit the inward movement of the elastic bands as well as prevent their slipping from the parts 4 when supported thereby. These retaining means consist of a shoulder 5 near each end of the plate extended across the space formed between the holder and the parts 4, said shoulders being formed by pressing portions of the plate downward, the depressions 6 thus formed constituting notches to receive the end of the finger when it is desired to engage the elastic band to stretch it, either for releasing or to make way for placing the model-slip in position.

In the modification each end of the plate 1 has a retainer 7 pressed therefrom in the form of a tongue, the inner end of the tongue being reduced to form opposite spaces 8 to receive the elastic band and prevents slipping. thereof in either direction. The elastic band 3 encircles the plate with the exception of the portion 9, which passes over the base portion of the tongue 7. The parts of the elastic at each side of the tongue are adapted to engage with the surface receiving the holder and prevent the latter from'slipping.

The model-slip 2, which is usually of paper, receives any matter to be copied and is placed upon the holder and retained in place by having its end portions passed beneath the elastic bands.

In practice the holder, with the model-slip in position, is placed at the top of a sheet of blank paper, and the pupil copies after the model as near as possible, and after writing a line moves the holder downward so as to cover the copy and bring the model close to the writing, with the result that the eye becomes accustomed to the correct form, and the pupil in a comparatively short time acquires proficiency in patterning thereafter.

What I claim is 1. A model-slip holder comprising a plate, elastic bands encircling the end portions of the plate and adapted to confine the modelslip, means for limiting the outward displacement of the elastic bands, and other means to limit the inward movement of said bands.

- 2. A model-slip holder comprising a plate having depressions near each end, elastic bands encircling the end portions of the plate for confining the model-slip, and spaced means for limiting the movement of the said elastic bands in each direction;

3. A model-slip holder comprising a plate having its end portions bent upon themselves and spaced from the body of the plate,

elastic bands encircling the end portions of the plate above the bent ends, and stopshoulders pressed from the plate and eX- tended across the space formed between the body thereof and its bent ends to confine the elastic bands in the said spaces.

4. A device of the character described comprising a plate having portions pressed therefrom near each end to form confining means and notches, elastic bands encircling opposite end portions of the plate, and a model-slip held to the plate by the elastic bands and covering the said notches thereof.
