SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 447,651, dated March 3, 1891.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, KENNON AGEE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Magnolia, in the county of Marengo and State of Alabama, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Copy-Holders; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.

My invention relates to improvements in copy-holders, and is intended to be used by children and others learning penmanship.

In the ordinary copy-books, where the copy is at the head of the page, it is very difficult to properly form the different characters or follow copy as the writing approaches the bottom of the page.

The object of my invention is to provide a simple and economical copy-holder which can be placed in close proximity to the line upon which the writing is being performed, thereby enabling the characters to be readily formed.

The invention consists in the novel construction of parts hereinafter fully described, and definitely pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of a copy-holder made in two parts and constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section of modified construction of the same, showing the holder made of a single piece. Fig. 3 is a cross-section of the same, and Fig. 4 is a plan view of one of the copy-strips.

1 and 2 designate two metal plates having their sides bent over, so as to form horizontal ways 3. One of these plates is slightly smaller than the other, so that it will fit and be adjustable within the same.

The numerals 4:4 denote two hooks, one on the outer end of each plate, by which the device may be attached to the paper 011 which the writing is being done. One or both of these hooks may be adjustable, so as to adapt the device to paper of different widths. For

this purpose either or both of the plates is provided with a longitudinal slot 5 and the shank 6 of the hook formed with upwardly and outwardly projecting lugs 7, which en gage wit-h the edges of the slot, so that the said shank and hook are longitudinally slidable thereon.

In Fig. 2 the holder is shown as being composed of a single strip or plate of metal or other suitable material.

The copy-slip shown in Fig. 3 consists of a strip of paper having thereon the characters which are to be copied. A number of these strips are inserted in the

1 and 2 underneath the ways The operation is as follows: The slips being inserted in the plates, the device is attached to the paperjust above the line on which the characters are to be copied,and can be moved up and down as the work progresses. When through with one slip, it can be readily removed, when another and different one will appear.

The object of making the device in two parts is that it may be folded up or telescoped, so as to be carried in the pocket.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- 1. A copy-holder consisting of two metal plates adjustable upon each other and each having its sides bent over, forming horizontal ways for the reception of a copy-slip, and provided at their outer ends with hooks adapted to engage with a papersheet,substantially as decribed.

2. In a copy-holder, the combination, with the plate having bent-over sides and a horizontal slot, of an adjustable hook having a shank provided with upwardly and outwardly projecting lugs adapted to engage with the edges of the slot, substantially as described.
