' MILK-PAIL.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 16, 1906.
Appli ation filed June 18,1906. Serial No. 322,295.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THURSTON J. WING, a
States, residing at Verbank, in the county of Dutchess and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Milk-Pails and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention is an improved pail or bucket for use in milking cows and it consists in the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The object of the invention is to provide a pail of this character which will be almost entirely closed, so that dust and dirt cannot enter the same while milking.
The above and other objects, which will appear as the' nature of the invention is better understood, are accomplished by the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a perspective view of the improved milking-pail. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view through the same and Fig. 3 is a side elevation, partly in section, of the removable cover or lid.
Referring to the drawings by numerals, 1 denotes a pail or bucket of any suitable form and construction, having a bail-handle 2 and a flat top 3, which is soldered or otherwise permanently secured around the upper edge of the side wall of the pail. In this top 3 is formed a circular opening surrounded by an upright annular flange 4, which is adapted to receive a depending annular flange 5 on a re movable cover or lid 6. The latter has ,extending through it at suitable points two downwardly-tapering tubes 7, which are permanently secured in it and which have their bottoms closed, as shown. Adjacent to these closed bottoms are oppositely-disposed openings 8, formed in the side walls of the tube 7 and closed by woven-wire fabric 9 or any other suitable material which will strain the milk passing through the openings 8. Also projecting from the top 3 adjacent to one edge is an outwardly tapering dischargespout 10, adapted to have its open outer end closed by a removable cap or cover 1 1.
It will be noted that when the cover 6 and cap 11 are in position, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the pail will be entirely closed except through the tubes 7, and while milking the upper ends of these tubes are practically closed by the operators hands, so that it is impossible for any dirt or dust to enter the pail and contaminate the milk. By removing the cap 11 the contents of the pail may be discharged through the spout 10, and by removing the cover 6 the latter and also the interior of the pail may be thoroughly cleaned.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction, operation, and advantages of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention as defined by the appended claim.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The herein-described milk-pail having the flat top provided with the spout at one side thereof, a central opening and an upwardly extending flange around said opening, and the flat cover to close said opening and having the depending flange to coact with that of the top to secure the cover in place, said cover having the downwardly-tapered tubes extending therethrough, closed at their lower ends and provided near their lower ends with openings, and strainers covering said openings, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
