DANIEL W. DART AND HENRY MAASS, OF JERSEY CITY, NEW JERSEY.
CLOTHES-LINE HOLDER.
Patented Oct. 16, 1906.
Application filed March 29,1905. Serial No. 252.625.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, DANIEL W. DART and HENRY MAAss, citizens of the United States,
residing at Jersey City, in the county of Endson and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clothes-Line Holders, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to clothes-line supports of the class usually employed in cities and towns and which comprise two parts one ofwhich is connected with a window-frame and the other with a post or other device at a predetermined distance from the window, oth of said parts being provided with pulleys around which an endless line is passed; and the object of the invention is to provide an improvement in that part or member of the supports which is connected with the window-frame, whereby a portion of the line may be held within the window so as to facilitate the placing of clothes or other articles to be dried on the line and then swung out of the window without slacking the line; and with these and other objects in view the invention consists in a device of the class specified constructed as hereinafter described and claimed.
, The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which the separate parts of our improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which 7 Figure 1 is a side view of a part of a window, showing our improved line-holder connected therewith, the parts thereof being in a position for placing the clothes on the line; Fig. 2, a crosssection on the line w x of Fig. 1; Fig. 3, a view similar to Fig. 2, but showing the parts in a different position; Fig. 4, a perspective view of an attaching-plate which we employ, and Fig. 5 a similar view of a supplemental attaching-plate which forms a part of our improvement.
In the drawings forming part of this specification we have shown at a, an inside view of one side of a window-frame which is secured in the wall I) of a building, said wall being provided with the usual Window-opening b and in the practice of our invention we secure to the outer side of the window-frame a plate 0, which is shown in Fig. 4. and which is provided with two angular hooks c and 0 which are arranged in the same vertical plane. We also provide a supplemental plate d, provided at one end with two projecting hinge-arms (1 having tubular heads d and between which is a recess (1, and the opposite end portion of the plate (1 is provided with an opening d and the bottom edge thereof in the form of construction shown with a recess d", and between the recess (1 and the opening (1 is a vertically-arranged groove 01 and above the opening d is a vertically-arranged groove d In practice the supplemental plate (1 is connected with the plate 0 by passing the hook 0 through the opening 61 and dropping said plate (1, so that the hooks c' and 0 will fit in the grooves d and d 7 The plate (1 is provided with a rigid outwardly-directed arm (1 to which is pivoted a supplemental arm e, provided at its free end and in the bottom thereof with a notch or recess c and. we also provide a line-army, having a tubular headf which fits between the heads (1 of the hinge-arms d of the plate (1, and the head 7 of the line-arm f and the heads (1 are connected by a pintle-pin 9 passed therethrough, and this construction forms a hinge on which the line-arm f is free to swing in a horizontal lane.
The arm f is provide at its outer or free end with a curved or angular portion f with which is connected a pulley g and a hookarm h is pivoted to the inner side of the window-frame at h and provided at its free end with a hook 715, which is adapted to engage the line-arm f when the latter is in the position shown in Figs. 1 and 2 at h, and the back of said line-armis provided with eyes at h and its, through which the hook it may be passed. The arm f is provided with a longitudinal back rib f, in which the eyes h and h5 are formed, and said arm is also provided with a to flange f which is adapted to be engaged y the end of the arm 6, the flange f entering the recess 6 in the end of said arm. We have also shown at i an ordinary endless clothes-line, and this line is passed around a pulley at a predetermined distance from the window and also around the pulley g and the upper part i of said line is passed around a hook j on the head f 2 of the arm f, and the other part i of said line is left free, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, in the operation of placing the clothes or other articles to be dried on the line. In this operation of placing the clothes or other articles to be dried on the line the arm f is swung in- IIO wardly of the window-frame, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, where it is held by the hookarm h, and the clothes or other articles to be dried are placed on the part i of the line, and as this operation proceeds the line is turned on the pulley g ,and that portion of the line on which the clothes or other articles are placed is carried in the direction of the pulley, which is arranged at a predetermined distance from'the window and which is not shown. After all the clothes and other articles are placed on the line the part i of the line is passed over a hook 9' on the head f 2 of the arm f and directly under the hook j. The hook-arm h is then detached from the arm f,
and said arm f is swung outside of the Window, as shown in Fig. 3, and the supplemental arm 6 is dropped onto the armf, as shown in said figure, the recess e in said supplemental arm engaging the top flange f 5 of the arm 7", and this securely holds the armf in the position shown in Fig. 3, and by reason of the passing of the separate parts of the line over the hooks and 7' the swinging outwardly of the arm f, as shown in Fig' 3, does not slack the line or either part thereof, this result being accomplished by the reason of the fact that the hooks j and f are at, the point where the arm f is pivotally supported or hinged.
The hooks j and y' need not necessarily be placed on the headf of the arm f, but should be placed in proximity thereto, if not on said head, and various changes in and modifications of the construction herein described may be made without departing from the spirit of our invention or sacrificing its advantages.
By means of our improvement clothes or other articles to be dried may be hung on an endless line by a party standing in the room or compartment in the wall of which the window is located, and this may be done without any danger of accident to said party, which frequently happens when it is necessary for such party to lean out of the window at any time.
Having fully described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a clothes-line holder for windows, a plate adapted to be secured to one side of the window-frame and provided with verticallyarranged' and upwardlydirected hooks, a supplemental plate provided with an opening near one end through which the upper hook of the first-named plate is adapted to be passed, said supplemental plate being also provided with a rigid and outwardly-directed arm and with a supplemental arm pivoted. thereto, a line-arm hinged tothe supplemental plate and adapted to swing inwardly and outwardly of the window and adapted to be engaged in its outward position by said supplemental arm, said line-arm being also provided at its free end with a pulley, and means for holding said arm in its inner position, substantially as shown and described.
2. In a clothes-line holder for windows, a plate adapted to be secured to'one side of the windowframe and provided with verticallyarranged and upwardly-directed hooks, a supplemental plate provided with an opening near one end through which the upper hook of the first-named plate is adapted to be passed, said supplemental plate being also provided with a rigid and outwardly-directed arm and with a supplemental arm pivoted thereto, a line-arm hinged to the supplemental plate and adapted to swing inwardly and outwardly of the window and adapted to be engaged in its outward position by said supplemental arm, said line-arm being also provided at its free end with a pulley, means for holding said arm in its inner position, and hooks arranged at or near the hinge-point of the line-arm and over which the separate parts of an endless line are adapted to be passed, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing as our invention we have signed our names, in presence of the subscribing witnesses, this 27th day of March, 1905.
