Be it known that I, GEORGE C. GARDNER, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hinges, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to improvements i hinges, and is fully described and explained in this specification and shown in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is an elevation of my improved hinge, showing the door open. Fig. 2 is a section in the line 2 2 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is a section in the line 3 3 of Fig. 1.

My hinge is intended especially for use on lavatory-doors, and particularly such doors as are supported upon marble plates or slabs, as is common practice in many buildings. It will be understood that the hinges used in such work preferably fit around the edge of the slabs, so as to engage on both sides and obtain a firm and rigid bearing. The marble slabs, however, vary slightly in thickness, and if a standard hinge one leaf of which is channel-shaped to fit over the edge of the slab 1s used it becomes necessary to work the material of the slab to a certain extent to fit the hinges in place. This is extremely difficult because of the hardness of the marble and the fact that the work is ordinarily done by hardware-fitters rather than by stonecutters. To remedy this difficulty and make it possible to use a standard hinge on slabs which vary to a considerable extent in thickness, I provide a leaf A, to be secured to the door, and a leaf B, pivoted to the leaf A and arranged to lie beside the same when the door is closed, as illustrated in dotted lines in Fig. 2. This leaf B is L-shaped in cross-section, one portion 1) of the leaf lying along the doorjamb and the other portion 6 lying behind the edge of the jamb and along the rear face thereof. C indicates a swinging plate which v is carried by links C, pivotally secured to the leaf B. The plate C can thus be swung toward and away from the portions b of the leaf B, so as to vary the size of the channel formed by said plate and leaf B. The leaf B is perforated for the passage of bolts or other fastening means, and the plate C is provided with elongated perforations c for the same purpose, the perforations being elongated to permit the slight lateral movement of the platfi C which occurs as it is swung back and fort It will be seen that with my improved device no shaping or working of the material of the door-jamb is necessary. The leaf B is placed so asto fit the angle of the jamb, suitable holes are bored for the passage of the bolts, the bolts are inserted, and the plate C is then brought down upon the jamb by nuts. When this is done, not only is the j amb firmly grasped between the leaf and plate, but the links C form struts which operate to brace the hinged end of the leaf B, so as to make the hinge even firmer than one where the leaf attach ed to the jamb is made in one piece.

I realize that considerable variation is possible in the details of this construction without departing from the spirit of my invention, and I do not intend, therefore, to limit myself to the specific form herein shown and described.

I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The combination with a leaf for attachment to a door, of a amb-leaf, right-angled in cross-section to fit the jamb, and a plate arranged to cooperate with the jamb-leaf to clamp the jamb, and links securing said jambleaf and plate together.

2. The combination with a door-leaf and a jamb-leaf, the latter of which is right-angled in crosssection and pivoted to the door-leaf at the edge of one of its webs, of a pair of links pivoted to the jamb-leaf adjacent to its pivot on the door-leaf, and a plate supported by said links and adapted to cooperate with the other Web of the amb-leaf to clamp the jamb.

3. The combination with a door-leaf and a j arnb-leaf, the latter of which is right-angled in cross-section and pivoted to the door-leaf at the edge of one of its webs, of a pair of links pivoted to the jamb-leaf adjacent to its pivot on the door-leaf, and a plate supported by said links and adapted to cooperate with the otherweb of the jamb-leaf to clamp the jamb, said plate being provided with elongated perforations to receive holding means in whatever position the plate may be placed.
