GEORGE E. KIMMEL, OF FAIRBURY, NEBRASKA.
WRENCH-ll FOR JAR-TOPS- Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 16, 1906.
Application filed January 16, 1906. Serial No. 296,294.
To ctZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE E. KIMMEL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fairbury, in the county of J eiferson and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wrenches for Jar- Tops; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to securing-tops for jars, &c., and to wrenches for manipulating them.
The object of the invention is to provide a top having means whereby the same can be readily grasped by the hand.
A still further object is to provide a novel wrench for engaging said means and which Will not slip.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists of a cap having an extension thereon which constitutes a handle or grip, and said extension is adapted to be inserted through a slot which is formed in a metallic strip, said slot being of sufficient length to permit the grip to be readily inserted thereinto. A locking-lever is pivotally mounted on the strip and is adapted to engage the grip and secure it within the slot, after which the strip can be turned after the manner of a wrench for the purpose of screwing on or unscrewing the cap.
The invention also consists of the further novel features of construction and combination of parts, the preferred forms of which will be hereinafter made clearly apparent.
In the accompanying drawings I have shown the preferred forms of my invention.
In said drawings, Figure 1 is aperspective view of a screw-cap having my improved wrench engaging the same. Fig. 2 is a detail view of the wrench. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section therethrough, and Fig. 4 is a side elevation of the Wrench in engagement with a modified form of screw-top.
Referring to the figures by numerals of reference, 1 is a screw-cap having a bail 2 eX- tending across the top thereof and fastened thereto by means of a rib 3, in which the bail is pivotally mounted. The ends of the bail are preferably bowed, as shown, and said bail can be swung down flat upon the cap or can be raised at right angles thereto. This bail and beveled, as shown at 9. wrench on the cap shown in Fig. 1 the lever constitutes a grip whereby the cap can be readily carried or turned manually. For use in connection with this cap I provide a wrench of novel construction, whereby said cap can be readily screwed or unscrewed. The wrench consists of a strip 4, of any suitable length, having a longitudinally-extending slot 5 therein adjacent one end, the length of said slot being slightly greater than that of the bail 2. That end of the slot adj acent the end of strip 4 is beveled, as shown at 6, and pivoted on stri 4, at the other end, is a locking-lever 7, aving an upwardlyturned end 8, constituting a thumb-piece, While its otherend is cut away diagonally In using this 7 is turned upon its pivot, so as to be removed'from slot 5. The bail 2 is then inserted through the slot, and the strip 4 is drawn longitudinally, so that the beveled wall 6 of slot 5 will contact with one of the bowed ends of the bail. Lever 7 is then swung on its pivot, so that its beveled end 9 will swing under the other bowed portion of the bail 2, and therefore the wrench and bail will be securely connected. By turning the strip 4 the cap can be readily screwed orunscrewed, as desired, and there is no danger of the wrench slipping out of position. While the cap is preferably provided with a bail, as shown, the same may, if desired, be formed with a straight bead 10 thereon, the ends of which are undercut, as shown at 11, so as to be engaged by the beveled wall 6 and lever 7. This modified construction is shown in Fig. 4.
What I claim is-. v
1. A wrench comprising a slotted strip adapted to receive a projection upon a screwtop, one end wall of the slot being adapted to project under one overhanging end of said projection, and movable means upon the strip adapted to project under the other end of the projection and lock the same within the slot.
2. A wrench comprising a slotted strip adapted to receive a projectionupon a screwtop, one end'wall of the slot being adapted to project under one of the overhanging ends of said projection, and a lever pivoted upon the strip and adapted to extend under the other end of the projection and lock the strip thereon.
3. A wrench comprising a strip having a longitudinally-extending slot therein, and a In testimony whereof I have signed my lever pivoted adjacent one'end of the slot name to this specification in the presence of IO and agapted tip overlap said end. h two subscribing Witnesses.
4. Wrenc com rising'a stri aving a 5 longitudinally-extenfiing slot th -rein, one GEORGE KIMMEL' end Wall of the slot being beveled, and a lever Witnesses: pivoted upon the strip adjacent the other end GARFIELD A. GILMORE, of the slot, said lever having a beveled end. W. B. SMITH.
