Specification of Letters Patent.

spring; and the object of my invention is-to' provide a simple, lnexpensive, spring-bottom for beds that may very easily placed in position for use or removed from the bedframe, and which spring-bottom may be readily folded up into small compass for shipping or storing purposes.
A further object of my invention is to provide means for readily locking the folding -spring-bottom in position upon the bedframe.
To the above pur oses myinvention consists in certain nove features of construction and arrangement of parts, which will be hereinafter more clearlyset forth, pointed out in my claims, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in Which- Figure 1 is a plan view of a folding bedspring of my improved construction in position for use. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of a bed-frame with my improved folding spring applied thereto. Fig. 3 is a vertical section taken on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a transverse section taken on the line 4 4 ofFig. 1. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of one of a set of blocks I make use of that are attached to the side rails of the bedframe. Fig. 6 is a ers ective view illustrating a locking-clip ma re use of for retaining the locking-levers in position on the sides of the bed-frame. Fig. 7 is an end elevation of the folding spring in its folded position.
Referring by numerals to the accompanying drawings, 1 1 indicate the side rails of the bed-frame, 2 the head-frame, and 3 the foot-frame. The rails 1 are of the usual angle-bar construction and are secured to the head and foot frames in any suitable manner. Arranged to slide longitudinally on top of the side rails 1 and at the ends thereof are the blocks 4, in the tops of the outer ends of which are formed the rectangular notches 5. Formed integral with the inner end of each block is a laterallyrojecting lip 6, which is adapted to engage eneath the horizontal portion of the side rail when the block is positioned on top thereof. The
pair of blocks 4 on each side rail is adapted to be spread apart, and thus held by means of a pair of spreading-levers 7, which lie immediately on to of each of the side rails 1, and each pair 0 levers is hinged together at the center, as indicated by 8. When these spreading-levers are in position on the side rails of the bed and are swung downwardly, so as to lie flat thereon, clips 9 are engaged over the hinges of said levers and beneath the horizontal portion of the side rails 1 in order to prevent the spreading-levers from being accidentally moved from their proper positions.
My improved folding bed-bottom comprises a pair of rods 10, each of which is provided with square ends, as indicated by 10, of such size as that they will readily fit in the square notches 5 in the blocks 4. Secured to each rod 10 are the ends of a series of longitudinally-extending flexible strips 11, each strip being made up of a series of sections, the ends of which are hinged together on transversely-extending rods 12. Suitable woven-wire sections 13 are arranged between all of the rods 12-and between the sections of the longitudinally-extending strips 11, thus forming the spring bedbottom. This bedbottom when removed from the bed-frame may be readily folded up on the transverse rods 12, as seen in Fig. 7, into comparatively small space, so that it may be readily stored or transported. When the bottom is positioned for use on the bed-frame, the square ends 10 of the rods 10 are seated in the notches 5 of the blocks 4, which blocks are located on top of the ends of the side rails 1.
The spreading-levers 7 are now positioned on top of the rails 1 between the blocks 4, and when said levers are forced downwardly to lie fiat upon the side rails 1 the blocks 4 will be pushed apart, and thus draw the entire bed-bottom taut. The clips 9 are now positioned, over the centers of the spreadinglevers, and the bed-bottom is ready to receive the mattress and other bedding.
Should the bed-bottom in time become loose, so that it sags, one of the rods 10 may be rotated a quarter of a turn, and thus take up portions of the strips 1 1, and thus the bedbottom. may be at all times kept taut and in proper position.
An im roved folding bed-bottom of my improve construction is very simple, inexpensive, easily applied to all forms of bed IIO frames, and can be very easily handled while being placed on the frame or removed therefrom.
The entire bottom and the attachments to the frame can be very quickly folded into a small compass and being constructed entirely of metal is very sanitary and can be very easily kept clean.
I claim- The combination with a bed-frame, of a' pair of rods detachably secured to the side rails of the bed-frame, flexible strips connecting the rods, flexible sections arranged between said strips, and means arranged on the side rails of the bed for moving the pair of rods apart to maintain tension in the flexible strips; substantially as specified.
2.. A folding bed-frame, comprising a pair of rods, a series of hinged flexible strips connecting the rods, flexible sections arranged between the hinged strips, and means where by the rods are held in position on a bedframe; substantially as specified.
3. In a folding bed-bottom, a pair of blocks detachably secured on each side rail of the bed, a pair of rods detachably secured to said blocks, flexible strips made up of a series of hinged sections connecting said rods, and flexible sections arranged between the hinged strips; substantially as specified.
4. The combination with a bed-frame, of a pair of blocks arranged to slide on each side rail of the bed-frame, means whereby said blocks are spread apart, a pair of rods having their ends detachably mounted in the blocks, hinged flexible strips connecting the rods, and flexible sections connected to the flexible strips substantially as specified.
