HEATING-BURNER.
Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH RoY, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Ouyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Heating-Burners and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to an improvement in heating-burners more especially designed for use in heating the broiling-chamber of a gas-range or gas-stove.
The object of this invention is to provide a burner which has a hollow or interiorlychambered body which is cylindrical in crosssection and provided in its lower portion with downwardly-discharging orifices spaced longitudinally of the body, with the body provided at its rear end with two hollow or interiorly-chambered arms projecting laterally in opposite directions, respectively, with the interior chambers of the arms closed at their outer ends and in communication with the interior chamber of the body at their inner ends, with each arm provided in its upper portion with upwardly-discharging orifices spaced longitudinally of the arm, and with the burner provided with suitable means whereby fire is communicated during the operation of the burner from a flame or flames issuing from an orifice or orifices in the lower portion of the body to gas escaping from the upper portions of the burner-arms.
With this object in view and to the end of realizing other advantages hereinafter appearing this invention consists in certain features of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a top plan of a heating-burner embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a section on line 2 2, Fig. 1, looking in the direction indicated by the arrow. Figs. 3 and 4 are sections on lines 3 3 and 4 4, respectively, Fig.2, looking in the direction indicated by the arrow. Fig. 5 is a section on line 5 5, Fig. 1, looking in the direction indicated by the arrow. Fig. 6 is a vertical section of a chamber provided with my improved burner employed in broiling or otherwise operating upon meat or other matter placed within the said chamber.
Portions are broken away and in section in Fig. 1 to more clearly show the construction.
Referring to Figs. 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 of the drawings, A indicates the horizontally or approximately horizontally arranged body of my improved burner. The body A consists, preferably, of a hollow casting. The body A is cylindrical in cross-section and hollow or chambered interiorly, as at 10. The chamber 10 extends from end to end of the body A and is provided at the forward and gas-receiving end of the body and internally with screwthreads 12 for accommodating the attachment of the burner to a pipe employed in conducting an inflammable mixture or fuelsuch, for instance, as gas and accompanying airto the burner.
The body A is provided in its lower portion 1 with two rows of orifices 13, leading from the chamber 10, with the said rows extending longitudinally of the body from a point near the forward end of the body into suitable proximity to the rear end of the body, with the orifices of each row suitably spaced longitudinally of the body, withthe orifices of one of the rows arranged to discharge downwardly and laterally toward one side of the body, and with the orifices of the other row arranged to discharge downwardly and laterally toward the opposite side of the body.
The body A is provided at its rear end with horizontal or approximately horizontal arms a and a, which project laterally from the body in opposite directions, respectively, and are preferably integral with and arrangedat a right angle to the body. Each arm a is provided interiorly with a chamber 15, which is closed at the outer end of the arm, as at 16,
and communicates at the inner end of the arm with the chamber 10.
Each arm a is provided in its upper portion with two rows of orifices 17, with the orifices of each row suitably spaced longitudinally of the arm, with the orifices of each row alternating with the orifices of the other row, with the orifices of one of the rows discharging upwardly and laterally toward one side of the arm, and with the arms of the other'row discharging upwardly and laterally toward the opposite side of the arm.
. orifices 18 and the rows of orifices 13 with a slot 20, which communicates with the cham ber 10 and extends circumferentially of the body-from the one to the other of the rows of orifices 13.
In the operation. of my improved burner the ignited gas-jets issuing from the most rearward orifices 13 in the lower portion of the body of the burner communicate fire to the gas issuing from the slot 20. The ignition of gas escaping from the slot 20 communicates fire to the gas issuing from the orifices 18, and the ignition of the gas escaping from the orifices 1.8 communicates fire to the gas escaping from the orifices 17 of the burnerar1ns.
In Fig. 6 my improved burner is shown arranged within the upper portion of a chamber C and used to broil or otherwise operate upon meat or other matter placed in the said chamber below the body of the burner. In Fig. 6, P indicates a pipe for supplying the inflammable mixture or fuel (gas and accompanying air) to the chamber 10 of the burner. The chamber C is provided at its lower end with air-inlets c. The chamber C is also provided with an air-outlet formed by a flue f, which communicates with the upper portion of the said. chamber at the rear end of the chamber. The burner is arranged with the arms a and. the rear portion of the body A, contained. within the fluef, so that during the operation of the burner suction is created within the said flue to establish a draft through the chamber G into the said flue, and the burning gas jets or flames issuing from the slot 20 and orifices 18 and 17 largely consume the fumes or vapors passing from any matter calorically treated. or operated upon Within the said chamber.
What I claim is 1. A heating-burner comprising an interiorly-chambered body which is arranged .in a horizontal plane and provided at one end with an interiorly-chambered arm projecting laterally from the body, with the interior chamber of the arm communicating with the interior chamber of the body, with the arm provided in its upper portion with two rows of orifices leading from the chamber of the arm, with the orifices of each row spaced longitudinally of the arm and alternating with the orifices of the otherrow, with the orifices of one of the rows arranged to discharge upwardly and laterally 'toward one side of the arm and with the orifices of the other row arranged to discharge upwardly and laterally toward the opposite side of the arm, and the body being also provided with orifices arranged to discharge downwardly from the chamber in the body and spaced longitudinally of the body, and means for communicating fire from a flame or flames issuing from the lower portion of the body to gas escaping from the burnerarm at the top of the arm.
2. A heating-burner' comprising an interiorly-chambered body which is arranged in a horizontal plane and provided at one end with an interiorly-chambered arm projecting laterally of the body, with the interior chamber of the arm communicating with the interior chamber of the body, with the arm provided in its upperportion with upwardly-discharging outlets leading from the chamber, with the body provided in its lower portion with two rows of orifices leading from the chamber of the body, with the orifices of each row spaced longitudinally of the body, with the orifices ,ofone of the rows arranged to discharge downwardly and laterally toward one side of the body and with the orifices of the other row arranged to discharge downwardly and laterally toward the ,opposite side of the body, and meansfor communicating fire from a flame or flames issuing from the orifices in the body to gas escaping upwardly from the aforesaid arm. i I
3. A heating-burner comprising an interiorly-chambered body which is arranged in a horizontal plane and has outlets arranged to discharge downwardly from the chamber in the body and spaced longitudinally of the body, said'body being provided at one end with two arms projecting laterally from the body in opposite directions respectively and arranged in line endwise, with the interior chambers of the arms communicating with the interior chamber of the body, with the arms provided in their upper portions with upwardly-discharging outlets leading from the chambers of the arms, and means for communicating fire from a flame or flames issuing from the lower portion of the body to gas escaping from the tops of both burner-arms.
