Be it known that I, CHARLES A. LIND- STRM, of Allegheny, Allegheny county, Iennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Truck-Bolster, of which the following is a fullfclear, and exact description, reference being had to the accom anying drawings, forming part of this s eci cation, in which- Figure l is a side e evation, partly broken away, of my improved bolster. cross-sectionon the line II II of Fig. l, and Fig. 3 is a top plan view.
My invention relates to the class of truckbolsters and is designed to provide an improved structure of the type wherein the compression member is formed of cast metal, while the tension member is formed of wrought material.
The object of the invention is to arrange the compression member so that the tension member may extend in a substantially straight line to its connecting-point, the web of the compression member'being thickened for bending the end of the tension member around it.
The invention further consists in the constructionand arrangement of the parts, as hereinafter described rnd claimed.
In the drawings I show the compression member of the truck-bolster, which is made of cast-iron or cast-steel with a web 2, having side flanges 3 3, which are deepest at the center and are gradually narrowed toward the ends. At the center the cast member is provided with a strut 4, which may be .either integral with or made separate from the body oi' the compression member.
At each end the web 2 of the compression member is inclined upwardly and provided with a thickened portion 5, around which the end of the tension member 6 is bent -and secured by rivets 7, extending through the thickened web and through both thicknesses of the tension member. This tension member extends between the llanges of the compression member, which are extended downwardly and form guides S for the bolster. 9 'is a separate casting, formingthe spring seat or support. The side bearings l() and thc center plate llv may be formed integral with the casting or made separate from and secured thereto.
The advantages of my invention result Fig. 2 1s av owing to the thickening from the peculiar connection between the cast impression member and the wroughtplate tension member, which allows the tension member to extend in a straight line to its connecting-point and gives an. easy bend, of the web at the ends of the compression member. The forming of the cast flanges deeper at the center than the ends gives the greatest amount of material where the greatest stresses are carried. I prefer to provide the cast compression member with longitudinal intermediate depending ribs 12, which will aid in preventing the web 2 from buckling under the strains. These ribs are preferably narrower than the flanges 3, as shown in Figs. l and 2.
Variations may be made in the form of the two members and their connection without departing Jrorn my invention.
