No. 832,587. PATENTED OCT. 9, 1906.

I b @m UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ROBERT BREWSTER, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS. I
ARTIFICIA Specification of Letters Patent. Application filed October 3, 1904. Saris-1N0. 226,985.
L TOOTH.
Patented Oct. 9,-1906.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT BREWSTER, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Artificial Teeth, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein'to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to improvements in artificial teeth, and pertains to an improved cusp formation for occlusal surfaces ofartificial teeth in the posterior part of the human mouth.
It has been known for years that artificial teeth with pronounced cusps, which are advantageous in natural teeth and which are embedded in the hon substance of thejaw, are a disadvantage when applied to artificial substitutes which rest only upon the smooth mucous surface of the mouth;
The present invention is designed to overcome this serious disadvantage in a very simple but effective manner. I
My invention consists in substituting for the prominent cusps flat occluding surfaces that are divided into a plurality of continuous inclined planes or knife-edges and in having the said edges of the upper teeth interlock with those of the lower teeth.
The invention is illustrated in the accompan 'ng drawings, in which- Flgure 1 is a perspective view of a tooth embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a view showing the upper and lower teeth interlocking. Fig. 3 is a perspective View of a modification showing the inclined planes running From the illustration it will be observed that the occlusal surfaces of the tooth, Fig. 1,is divided into a plurality of inclinedplanes of'knife-edges 2, and by reference to Flg. 2 it will be observed that the projections thus for'iined on the upper and lower teeth inter- In carrying out this invention the diameter or area of the crowns of the teeth is not increased, whileat the same time a much larger area of incising surface is provided than is found in natural teeth.
I am aware that artificial teeth have been made with their-occlusal surfaces roughened by cross-cuts; but such cross-cut surfaces will not accomplish the urpose of my invention, which is to subdivi e the food by incision instead of by grinding.
Having thus described this invention,what is claimed, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is
1. An improved artificial tooth having its occlusal surface divided into a plurality of elongated parallel inclined edges.
2. Improved artificial teeth having their occlusal surface divided into a elongated parallel interlocking inc lned planes or knife edges, and the outer surfaces of which are continuous.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ROBERT BREWSTER.
