To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, BENJAMIN F. 'FLEGEL, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Racine, in the county of Racine and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fishing-Tackle and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.

My invention consists in certain peculiarities of construction and combination of parts herein shown, described, and claimed, its object being to prevent loosening and falling away of a fishing-line reel from a rod or slipping of the reel circumferentially of the rod to which it is detachably connected, and, further, to provide for bringing the grip portion of the rod-handle nearer the reel than is ordinarily the case, particular reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 represents a partly sectional side elevation of a portion of a separable fishingrod handle having a line-reel. secured thereto in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2, a transverse section view indicated by lines 2 2 in Fig. 1; Fig. 3, a plan view of a fragment of a detachable grip portion of said handle; and Fig. 4 a view of rod-handle sections disjointed, one having a pivotal spring-latch and the other keeper-sockets for the latch.

Referring by letter to the'drawings, A indi cates the grip-section of a jointed handle of a preferably separable fishing-rod, this section of the handle being provided with a band B, having a segmental wedging-oifset b, and a forward tenon end 0 of said section of the handle is projected beyond said band. The tenon c is bound by a ferrule C, preferably provided with longitudinal ribs d, that extend from under the offset 1) of the band B, and the ferrule, as shown in a majority of the views, may be suitably cut to form a springtongue 6, having a lug f, this tongue and lug serving as a latch, in which case the tenon c is provided with a longitudinal clearance-recess back of the latch.

tions together in such a manner that one cannot have rotary motion in the other or accidental disengagement from the same. The ferrule C of the grip-section A of the handle being provided with the ribs (1 aforesaid corresponding grooves are provided in the socket end 9 of the handle-section D, and the engagement of said ribs and grooves also serves to prevent rotary motion of one handle-section in the other, as well as to take strain that would otherwise come upon the latch above specified. Either of the ribs engaged with a corresponding groove would be sufficient to prevent rotary motion of one handle-section in the other, and so far as this feature of my invention is concerned the latch aforesaid may be omitted; but a latch is preferable as a means to insure against accidental separation of the handle-sections. A series of perforations h are preferably provided in the socket end 9 of the handle-section D to provide for adjustable connection of the same with the grip-section A of the handle in proportion to varying length of line-reel bases.

The base E of the line-reel F herein shown is caught at its ends in the wedging-oifset b of the band-B and a similar offset & of another band G on the handle-section D, and this handle-section being positively locked against rotary movement in its engagement with the grip-section A of the handle said reel will be always in proper position for the use of an angler employing the rod. When grooves are swaged in the socket end g of. the handlesection D for engagement of longitudinal ribs (1 of the ferrule C aforesaid, the external ribs of said handle section, resulting from the grooving, are parallel to the reel-base, and their position facilitates the proper assembly of the reel and other rod-sections A with the rod-section aforesaid. To disconnect the handle-sections aforesaid, the latch is retracted from its keeper-aperture in the socket of the handle-section D and the tenon end of the grip-section A of the handle pulled clear of said socket.

As shown in Fig. 4, a spring-latch 6 may be put in pivotal connection with the socket end g of the handle-section D and this socket end of said handle-section provided with an aperture 76 for the engagement of the lugf of the latch, which lug is also engageable with any one of a series of keeper-sockets it, formed in the ferrule C and tenon end of the grip-section A of the handle incased by said ferrule.

From the foregoing it will be readily understood that I do away with the slide-band usual on the handle of afishing-rod for engagement of one end of a line-reel base to aid in holding the reel in place, and at the same time I am enabled to bring the grip portion of the rod-handle nearer said reel, this portion of said handle being in some instances sheathed with cork or cork composition or other suitable material.

I claim- 1. A separable fishing-rod handle composed of two sections one of which is a gripsection having a tenon end, the other section being provided with a socket vin which the tenon has engagement, a band on the gripsection encircling the rear portion of the tenon and provided with a wedging segmental offset for the engagement of one end of a line-reel base, and a spring-latch in connection with said tenon for engagement with an aperture with which the tenon-socket is provided.

2. A separable fishing-rod handle composed of two sections one of which is a gripsection having a tenon end, the other section being provided with a socket in which the tenon has engagement, means locking said tenon against rotary movement in the socket,

and a band on the grip-section encircling the rear portion of the aforesaid tenon and provided with a wedging segmental offset for the engagement of one end of a line-reel base.

3. A separable fishing-rod handle com posed of two sections one of which is a gripsection having a longitudinally-ribbed tenon end, the other section being provided with a longitudinally-grooved socket in which the ribbed tenon has engagement, a band on the grip-section encircling the rear portion of the tenon and provided with a segmental wedging-offset for the engagement of one end of a line-reel base, and a spring-latch in connection with one handle-section to have'engagement with the other handle-section.
