FISHING-ROD.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 470,473, dated March 8, 1892. Application filed August 3, 1891. Serial No. 401,504. (No model.)

To aZZ whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, JASPER B. COLEMAN and VIRGIL I. GUYER, residing at Midway, in the county of Barnwell and State of South Carolina, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fishing-Rods, of which the following is a full and complete description, sufficient to enable others tounderstand, make, and use the same.

The object of ourinvention is to provide a strong and durable jointed rod adapted to be easily put together and taken apart, and which when put together is not liable to become disjointed in use...

To these ends the invention consists in the construction shown and described, and specifically defined in the claims.

Figure 1 is a view of the tip end of the rod. Fig. 2 is a View of the tip and a section of the body of.the rod separated. Fig. 3 shows the,

tip and rod joined together. Fig. 4 is a view of an open ring by which the line is joined to the tip, and Fig. 5 is a View of a spoonbait adapted to be used in connect-ion with our rod.

A designates the tip of the rod, and E the body of the rod, which may be made in several sections separably jointed together or in a single piece.

The tip A is made of spring-steel of the usual length and of such thickness as to give the requisite strength and elasticity. At its front or tip end it is provided with a loop a, adapted to receive an open ring 0, to which the line is to be attached, as shown in Fig. 3.

At the lower or back end the tipAis screw threaded, as shown at c, and is provided with a tapering nut B, which tapers down toward the rear to the size of the tip, but forms a square shoulder at the front.

The rod E or the section or joint thereof with which the tip is connected is hollow or is provided at its front end with a ferrule or socket G, adapted to receive the tapered end I) of the tip A, which is inserted as far as the nut B will permit. When tightly pressed together, the tapering nut B will tighten the joint by a wedging action and prevent the easy or accidental separation of. the parts.

To guard more eifectually against the separation of the tip from the main part of the rod and against the separation of the sections of a jointed rod, we use a thin strong line E, which is attached to the tip A in front of the nut B, then wound tightly around the body of the rod, and secured thereto toward the Should the joints then become separated, the line F will prevent the loss of the detached or separated parts.

The nut 13 is adjustable up and down to provide for inserting the end of the tip more or less into the socket G.

Having now described our invention, we claim-- 1. In a jointed rod, the combination, with the rod-section thereof provided with a socket or ferrule, of a tlp-joint adapted to'be inserted in said socket and provided with a tapered nut whereby the parts are tightened and secured by friction,substantiall y as shown and described.

2. In a jointed rod, the combination, with the body thereof provided at its front end with a socket or ferrule, of a tip-joint adapted to be inserted in said socket and a tapered adjustable nut on said ti p-joint whereby the parts are tightened and secured by friction and by the adjustment of which the tip is adapted to be inserted more or less into its socket in the body portion, substantially as shown and described.

3. In a jointed rod, the combination of the rod-section socketed at its front end for the reception of the end of the tip, a tip-joint adapted to enter said socket and having -thereon a tapered nut for tightening the joint by friction, and a line or cord secured to the tip in front of said nutand wound upon and secured to the body portion toward the buttend, substantially asshown and described.
