To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ALvoRD M. MOLERAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kansas City, in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination WVire-WVorking Tools, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention is an improvement on my patent for a combination wire-working tool, No. 777,126, issued December 13, 1904; and one of my objects is to provide a tool combining most of the advantageous features embodied in said patent with cer tain new elements hereinafter described and claimed.
A further object is to produce a toolwhich may be manufactured more cheaply than the one disclosed in the above-mentioned patent without sacrificing its efficiency or durability.
In order that the invention may be fully understood, reference will now be made to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 represents a side elevation of the tool with the outer ends of its handles broken away. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of same, taken on line II II of Fig. 3, showing the tool open in full lines and closed in dotted lines. Fig. 3 is a transverse longitudinal section taken on line III III of Fig. 1, and Fig. 4 is an edge view of the tool.
In carrying out the invention I employ a pair of exterior heads 1 of circular form provided with integral arms 2, which extend rearwardly and form one of the tool-handles. Said circular headsare reinforced at their margins with inwardly-extending flanges 3 and 4. The flanges on one head abutting against the flanges on the opposing head leave an intervening space 5 for a purpose hereinafter specified. Heads 1 and their arms 2 are rigidly secured together by means of rivets 6, 6 and 6 and a centrally-dis posed transverse pin 7, having reduced terminals 8 extending through bosses 9 ,formed integral with the central portions of heads 1 for the purpose of reinforcing the latter.

12 designates U-shaped recesses in the front central portions of heads 1, and 1.3 designates clamping-jaws at the rear ends of the enlarged portions 2 of arms 2, which latter are strengthened with a reinforcement 14.
15 designates registering longitudinal slots in the enlarged portions 2, each of which has an edge containing a series of segmental recesses 16.
17 designates a staple-pulling jaw located between the forward portions of heads 1, to which latter it is rigidly secured by rivet 6 Said jaw is provided with a cutting edge 19, extending into recess 12, and a shoulder 17, which abuts against the edges of the adjacent flanges 3, and thus relieves rivet 6 of a portion of the strain to which it is subjected when the jaw is in use.

Said enlarged portion 26 is provided with a clamping-j aw 27, adapted to cooperate with clamping-j aw 13, and a triangu: lar slot 28, the reduced end 29 of which is beyond the outer surfaces of portions 2 and form a convenient grip for the thumb and in dex-finger when it is desired to slide the key either backward or forward in the slots. When the key occupies the forward position, (shown by full lines, Fig. 2,) the width of the forward end of slot 28 permits the tool to be opened and closed at will. When said key is moved backwardly to the dotted position in said figure, the tool will be held in a closed position. Likewise if a wire or other object is grasped by any of the jaws of the tool the latter may be held in a closed position on said wire or other object by pushing the key backwardly in the slots as far as possible, and thus leave both hands of the operator free. After the key has been adjusted to a certain position it is held from accidental movement by reason of its reduced ends 32 being forced into engagement with the registering re- "fcesses 16 by means of a flat spring 33, secured at its forward end to the rear portion of head 20 and bearing at its opposite end against reinforcement 14, so that it will normally push said members apart, as shown by full lines, Fig. 2. Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters .Patent, is I 1 1. In a tool of the character described, two heads pivotally secured together and provided with jaws, slotted portions extending from said heads, the slot in one of said portions being triangular, and a key slidingly arranged in said slotted portions adapted when slid in one direction to hold the jaws in either a closed or partly-closed position.
2. In a tool of the character described, two heads pivotally secured together and provided with jaws, slotted portions extending from said heads, one edge of one of the slots having segmental recesses, a key slidingly arranged in said slotted portions adapted when slid in one direction to hold the jaws in a closed position, and means interposed between the slotted portions for normally holding them apart and for forcing the key into engagement with said segmental recesses.
. 3. In a tool of the character described, two heads pivotally secured together and protions extending from said heads, one edge of one of the slots having segmental recesses, a key slidingly arranged in said slotted portions adapted when slid in one direction to hold the jaws in a closed position, and means interposed between the slotted portions for normally holding them apart and for forcing the key into engagement with said segmental recesses.
4. In a tool of the character described, a head composed of two members secured together and provided with jaws, a second head arranged in a space between the two members and pivotally secured to the latter,said second head also having jaws which cooper ate with those on the first-mentioned head, slotted portions on said heads, and a key slidingly arranged in said slotted portions adapted when slid in one direction to hold the jaws in either a closed or partly-closed position.
5. In a tool of the character described, a head having jaws and a centrally-disposed space, a second head. arranged in the space and pivotally secured to the first-mentioned head, said second head also having jaws which cooperate with those on the first-mentioned head, slotted portions formed integral with said heads the slotted portions of the first-mentioned head having a space for the reception of the second head, handles extending from the slotted portions, a key slidingly arranged in the intermediate slotted portion provided with shoulders which abut against the outer slotted portions, and reduced terminals on said key which project through said slotted outer portions, substantially as described.
6. A tool of the character described consisting of a head formed of two members secured together and provided with jaws, abutting flanges extending inwardly from the margins of said members and leaving a space between the latter, a handle extending'from said members, an irregular-shaped head ICC snugly fitting the space between the two members and pivotally secured to the latter, jaws on said irregular-shaped head which cooperate with those on the first-mentioned head when the tool is open, and a handle extending from the irregular-shaped head.
7. A tool of the character described consisting of a head of circular form composed of two members secured together and. provided at their forward ends with registering U- shaped recesses, inwardly-extending abutvided with staple-pulling jaws, slotted porastaple-pulling jaw formed integral with said irregular-shaped head and adapted to cooperate with the first-mentioned jaw, a handle secured to said irregular-shaped head, a spring interposed between the handles adapted to normally hold the staple-pulling jaws open, and means slidingly arranged in the handles for holding the jaws closed.
