communion-Tool..
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 25, lt; z
Application led October 17, i905. Serial No. 283,147.
To all whom, it may concern:
Beit known that I, IRA ELBIRT VANAUKEN,
`a citizen of the United States, residing at Twin Falls, in the county ot Cassia and State of Idaho, haveinvented a new'and useful Combination-Tool, of which the following is a specilicatio'n.
The invention relates to improvements in combination-tools. l
The object of the present invention vis to improve the construction of combinationtools and to provide one designed-particularly for use of house-painters, decorators, and the like and adapted to provide a putty-knife, a pot-hook for suspendinga paint-bucket or similar receptacle from a lung of a ladder, a
nail-puller, and a hammer.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arran ement of parts hereinafter fully described, ustrated in the accompanying drawing, and pointed out in the claim hereto appended.
The iigure of the drawing is aperspective view cfa combination-tool constructed in accord ance 'with this invention. Referring to the drawing, 1 designatesa putty-imite blade provided with an integral shank 2, consisting of a substantially straight inner portion and a curved outer portion 3, forming a hook and extending in a plane co'- incident with that of the blade of the puttyknife. The hook-shaped outerV portion is adapted to engage the rung of a ladder, and as it is arranged in the same longitudinal plane as the bzlade of the putty-knife it will not interfere with the free use of the same close to the suri'aceor place Where the putty is to be applied and the shank will not intertere with the iieing of the blade in either direction.A The blade 1 is provided at its inner end adjacent to the shank 2 and at the outer side thereof or the side opposite that at which the bill of the hook is arranged with a tapering recess 4, forming a seat for the bail of a paint-bucket or other receptacle when the hook of the shank is in enga ement with a rung of a ladder. As the bil or projecting portion 3 of the hook is arran ed in a plane coincident with that of the-b ade, it certes around the edgeof the hand Whenthe device is used as a putty-knife and is arrangedont of the way. The shank orportionwhich nects the bill of the hook with the blade" serves as a handle for both portions, being grasped by the painter when engagin the bill or projecting portion of the hook wit the rungI of a ladder.
The shank 2 is provided 'at the outer side vadjacent to the curved portion 3 with an integral lug or enlargement, forming a hammerhead 5, which projects outward from the shank and which 1s arranged in convenient position for driving a nail or other fastening device or for any other use to which an ordinary hammer may be put. .The bill of the hookI is provided with a claw '6, Jforming a nail-puller and adapted to enable a nail or similar fastening device to be readily ex tracted.
. It will be seen that the tool is exceedingly simple and inexpensive in construction, that it possesses great strength and durability, and that it is adapted to be used either as a putty-knife or as a pot-hook for suspending paint-buckets andsimilar receptacles from a adder or other su port. Also it will be clear that the tool is a apted for use as a hammer and is providedwitli means for conveniently extracting-nails.
Having thusully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to lsecure by Letters Patent, iis- A device of the character described, comprising a handle having a cur-ved portion or hook at one end and a com aratively wide flat blade at its opposite en the blade and hook being located in coincident planes topermit the hook to engage the hand of the operator and prevent turnin of the blade, and a hook formed conjointly y the handle and an' extension of the blade, said hook and the `hooked handle serving ,conjointlyas a pot- In testimony that I claim the foregoingas my own l have hereto aiiLiXed my signature in the presence of two witnesses i v IRA ELBIRT VANUKEN.
