STEANl--BOILER BLOW-OUT OR CLEANER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 18, 1906.
Application filed February 20,1906- Serial NO- 302.041.
ments in Steam-Boiler Blow-Outs or Clean-l ers,l of which the following is a specification. My invention relates to steam-boiler blowouts or cleaners.
The object of the present invention is the provision of a simple, durable, and inexpensive device adapted to be positioned within the water-legs surrounding the lire-box of a steam-boiler of a traction, stationary, or locomotive engine and utilized to blow out the sediment under the steam-pressure.
The invention contemplates the provision of an improved device of the character set forth, as-will fully appear from the following description, while the novel features of the invention are set forth in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a perspective view showing how the invention may be applied to a boiler; Fig. 2, an enlarged horizontal section on line 2 2 of Fig. l; Fig. 3, a cross-section on line 3 3 of Fig. 2; Fig. 4, a perspective detail of the complete invention; Fig. 5, a detail of the inner or rotatable tube; Fig. 6, a longitudinal section of Fig. 4, and Fig. 7 a detail section on line 7 7 of Fig. 4.
An ordinary boiler, such as might be used for a traction, stationary, or locomotive engine, is shown at 1. The present invention is located in the lower part of the water-legs 2, surrounding the fire-box 3, as the sediment in the steam-boiler collects at these points.
The numerals 4 designate outer tubes disposed horizontally at the bottoms of the four water-legs 2, said tubes .having elongated or more or less elliptical openings 5 in their tops, and they are rigidly secured in position by being screwed through the walls of the fire box, and on their outer ends are screwed caps 6, which are provided with blow-off cocks 7. Integral with or connected to the upper faces of the tubes 4 and resting against or connected to the walls of the water-legs are deflecting flanges or members 8, whereby the sediment is caused to gravitate through the openings 5.
Located within and snugly fitting the outer tubes 4 are the inner revoluble tubes 9, which are provided with openings 10, corresponding to the openings 5 and adapted to register therewith. The inner tubes 9 also have blow-out holes or openings l1, which may be brought into alinement with the blow-off cock 7 when the inner tubes are turned or reversed from their normal position; but when in normal position the opening ll of each tube 9 is closed by the cap 6. The inner tubes 9 have turn-handles l2 secured thereto which pass throughthe caps 6.
Thel ends 13 and 14 of the outer and inner A tubes are open, so that the water is in constant communication with the interiors of the tubes 9. All of the joints may be suitably acked.
Or inarily the inner tubes 9 are positioned with the openings l0 uppermost and in regis- -ter with the openings 5, so that the blow-off ports 1.1 are closed, although the water has acl cess to the interiors of the tubes 9. I/Vhen in this position, the sediment passes through the openings 5 and. 10 and accumulates in the interior of the tubes 9; but when it is desired to blow out the accumulations the engineer or fireman turns the handles 12 until the ports l1 are in registerwith the respective blow-off cocks 7. Any suitable means may be employed for limiting this turning action. When the tubes 9 or such tube as may be turned become reversed, the water under the pressure of the steam blows out the accumulations within the pipes 9 through the blow-out cocks 7, assuming that the latter have been opened. After the sediment has been eliminated the tubes 9 are turned back tovtheir former position and the blow-out cocks 7 closed. e
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, .is-
l. Ina steam-boiler blow-out or cleaner, the combination with an outer tube having an opening for the elimination of the sediment from said tube and also open for the passage of the sediment to its interior, of an inner movable tube located within the outer tube aforesaid and open to receive the sediment within itself and also provided with a voiding-opening which may be broughtlinto communication with the elimination-opening ofthe outer tube by moving said inner tube.
2. In a steam-boiler blow-out or cleaner, the combination with an outer tube having an opening for the elimination of the sedi- IOS ment from said tube and also open for the passage of the sediment to its interior, of an inner rotary tube located within the outer tube aforesaid and open to receive the sediwithin itself and also provided with a voiding-opening which may be brought into .communication with the elimination-openitng) of the outer tube by turning said inner 3. In a steam-boiler blow-out or cleaner,
the combination with an outer tube having an opening for the elimination of the sediment from said tube and also provided withthe combination with an outer tube having an opening for the Aelimination of the sediment from said tube and valso provided with openings for the reception of the sediment, of'
an inner rotatable tube located within the vouter tube and having openings normally :registering with the sediment-receiving openings in the outer tube and also provided with Va voiding-opening, said inner tube being adapted for rotation to throw its openings out of register with those of the vouter tube and vto place the voiding-opening in communication with the elimination-opening of the outer tube.
5. In a steam-boiler -blow-out or cleaner, 'the combination with an outer tube having an opening for the elimination of the sediment and open ferthepassage of the sediment 'to its interior, of .a sediment-defiector for deflecting the sediment to the receiving-opening of the outer tube, and an inner movable ltube located within the outer tube aforesaid and open to receive the sediment within itself and provided with a voiding-opening which may be brought into communication with the elimination-opening of the outer tube by moving said inner tube.
6. In a steam-boiler blow-out' or cleaner, the combination with an outer tube having an opening for the elimination of the sediment and open for the passage of the sediment to its interior, of a sediment-deliector comprising members which converge toward said outer tube to direct the sediment to the sediment-receiving opening thereof, and an inner movable tube located within the outer tube aforesaid and open to receive the sediment within itself and provided with a vo1`ding-opening which may be brought into communication with the' eliminationsopening of the outer tube by moving said inner tube.
7. In a steam-boiler blow-out or cleaner, the combination with a water-leg of the fire.- boX, of an outer tube disposed in the lower portion ofthe water-leg and having a sediment-receiving opening-and also a sedimentelimination opening, and an innermovable tube located within the outer tube aforesaid v and provided with a voiding-opening which may be brought `into communication with the elimination-opening of the outer 'tube by moving said inner tube.
8. Ina steam-boiler blow-out or cleaner, the combination with a water-*leg of the reboX, of an outer tube disposed in the lower portion of the water-leg and having a sediment-receiving opening and a sedimentlelimination opening, Van inner movable `tube located within vthe outer tube aforesaid and provided with a voiding-opening which may be brought into communication with Vthe elimination-opening of the outer tube 4by moving said inner tube, and a sediment-'deiiector comprising members `converging from the walls of the water-leg toward the outer tube and adapted to direct the sediment to the sediment-receiving opening of said 'outer v tube. In testimony whereof I 'hereunto affix my signature in presence 'of two witnesses.
