l b all whom it may concern 'Be it known that I, WILLIAM L. Caomn, citizen of the Uni-ted States of America, residing at Springfield, in the county of Hampden and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Boiler- Flue Blower, of which the followingis a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in front-end blowers for flue boilers of the stationary type, whereby the operator can direct the cleaning jets of steam longitudinally of the fines without opening the smoke doors, and without inconvenience to himself, and said invention consists of a. counterwi th a steam chest which is supper-tel from a bross bar, all as hereinafter set forth.
The object of my invention is to prbvide for a boiler a simple, convenient, and eliicient flue blower or cleaner, that ma receive its supply of steam from one side 0 or from above said boiler, at the front endof the other movable part, which attachment is an obvious disadvantage A. further object is to provide means for readily placing my blower or cleaner in pcthe same when neces-- sary, all without taring down, dismantling, or otherwise disturbing the usual or regular and ordinary boiler parts and members at the front end.
Other objects and advantages will appear in the course of the following description.
I attain the objects and securethe adtrated in the accompanying drawings, in which-- a Figure 1 is a central longitudinal vertical section through a boiler or the front end portion thereof, showing the application thereto of a practical embodiment of my blower, the blower armstanding vertically; Fig. 2, a front end elevation of said boiler, with parts broken out to disclose said blower, said arm in this view being turned out of the vertical position which it occupies in the preceding view; Fig. 3, an enlarged side elevation and partial section of the blower; Fig, i, a cross-section, taken on lines H, looking in the direction of the associated arrow, in Fig. 3, and, Fig. 5, an enlarged top plan of one terminal of the supporting bar for the blower, showing how the same is secured to the boiler.

Referring to the drawings, it will be seen that l have "there shown a boilersheil 1 provided with a front head (Brand tubular lines 3, and arranged 1n an ordinary bricl: setting 5 and plate setting 6. The shell 1 projects at the forward terminal to form a dry sheet l. The latter has a ring 8 in its front end, such ring being angular 1n cross-section.

Extending across the front end of the dry sheet, at a height sutiicient to avoid obstructing or interfering with the il'uesB at their front ends, is a bar 17. If necessary the bar i7 is inwardly offset adjacent to the ends thereof, such necessityarising when the .S mol e doors -9 and 10-, of usual construc- 1 tion, are hinged to the vertical par-t or iiange construction of the blower part directly attached to said bar would prevent said part from being placed in position, owin to the close vproximity of the central over apping or meeting edge portions of'the doors 9 and 10. In-Fig. 1, the central vertical ilange of the door 9 is shown in section atl9.
The blower com rises a steam chest 20, a
collar-yoke'di wit i'in .said 'ehest, a jet tube "or arm 22 connected with said collar-yoke at one endand an operating rod 23 connected with said yoke at the other end, and a counterweight 2% for said arm- A bracket arm 25 rises f'com the front end of the steam chest 20, and said arm is bolted at 26 to the cross bar 17, against the back thereof in the center. In this manner and by'this means the blower is secureiy fastened in place and iocated most advantageously relative to the finest is to say, the arm 22 is so situ ated' that it can be rotated on the'c'ollar-yoke 21 as an axis in front of said fiues. l
The aforesaid vertical part of the conduit 12 that is within the dry sheet 7 opens at its base into the topl'of the steam chest 20, the
former being tapped into the latter. Steam .under pressure is thus admitted to the chest 20, when thevalve 13 is opened, and passes into the arm 22, through a short length of ipe27 andan elbow 28, to escape in jets rom said arm through a series of nipples 29 with which said arm is provided on the side next to the flues 3. The pipe 27 has one end tapped into the inner or rean end of the collar-yoke 21- and the other end tapped into the elbow 28. One end' of the arm 22 is tapped into the elbow 28 and'the other end of said arm is closed by means of ,a cap 30.
The nipples 29 are spaced to correspond with the spacing ofthe fiues 3, and by preferenc said nipples have a conical or other v form that produces larger openings at their inner ends than at their outer ends, so as to increase the force of the steam at the points of exit. By increasing the s eam pressure in this-manner more powerful jets are discharged into the fines and the cleaning effect is ,enhancedac'cordingly. Conical openings through the nipples 29 are clearly shown at 31, in Fig. :3.
The inner end of the steam chest 20, through which the pipe 27 extends, is closed by means of a plate 32, which fits around said pipe and is bolted, as indicated at 33, to said chest. Packin material 34 is inserted in the chest 20, between the plate 32 and the adjacent end of the collar-yoke 21'. T he pressure from the steamin its passage through the chest 20 into the pipe 27 tends to force the collar-yoke tightly against the packing 341 The rod-23 has its inner end rigidly attached to theouter or front end of the collar-yoke 21, and is provided at its outer end with a handle 35. The chest 20 is provided in the front end through which the rod 23' passswith a stufi'ing-box 36. The rod 23 extends forwardly beyond the front of the doors 9 and '10, the meeting-edge portions of said doors beingperforated to admit of the passage of said rod. It is by means of this red, rotated from the outside of the boiler and its settings, that the arm. 22 is 0 rated, said arm being turned in either d1rection, -with the elbow 28, the pipe 27, and the collar-yoke 21, by said rod. The rear-end of the collar-yoke2l constitutes what may be termed a trunnion for the arm 22,'such end or trunnion being journaled in a bearing 37 provided for it in the'back part of the chest 20 and forming part of said chest. v i v The object of the counterweight 24 is to balance the arm 22 and so to facilitate and render-easier the act of turning said arm by means of the rod 23. into the ends of adjacent fiues 3, and by proper manipulation of the rod 23 and said arm, through the medium of intervening parts and members, said-nipples are brought into operative position relative to different sets of said flues', with the result that the jets are directed through the several flues Without inconvenience or danger to the operator.
Obviously, changes in details of construction may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention, and I do not Wish to limit myself to any articular form or arrangement of parts ot erthan the scope' I of my claims renders necessary.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination with a flue boiler and the front end'inclosing members therefor, including the smoke doors, and a stea1n said boiler and said inclosing members, at
[supply conduit entering the space between right angles to the axis of sald boiler, offamember connected with said conduit, means separate from and independent of sai doors, to support said last-mentioned member, a jet-pipe connected with said last-mew,
tioned memoer and adapted to be revolved in a plane substantially parallel with the adjacent boiler end, and exteriormeansfor revolving said jetipe.,
. 2. The combination with a flueboiler and thefront-end inclosing' members therefor, a steam-supply conduit entering the space between said boiler and said'inclosing memhers, at right angles to the axisof said boiler, and. a supporting v member attached to fixed portions of said inclosing members of a member connected with said conduit'and attached to-said suporting member, a jetpipe connected wit saidmember which is connected with said conduit, and adapted to be revolved in a plane substantially parallel with the adjacent boiler end,- and exterior means for revolving said jet pipe'. 3; The combination vwith a flue member connected with said conduit and bo the front end'inclosing members therefor, a' j supported by said bar, a jet-pipe connected with said last-mentioned member and adapted to be revolved in a plane substantially parallel with the adjacent boiler end,
5. The combination with a flue boiler and front end members, and a steam-supply conduit, of a member connected with said conduit, means to support said last-mentioned member, a hollowarm connected with said last-mentioned member, said arm being provided with nipples having openings therein which are constricted at their outer ends, and exterior means to revolve said arm, the movement of said arm being in a plane substantially parallel with the plane of the adjacent boiler end.
6. A boiler flue blower comprising a steam chest, a collar-yoke journaled in saidchest, apipe rigidly attached to said collar-yoke at oneend and extending out of said chest, an elbow on the outer end of said pipe, a jet-pipe connected with said elbow, a counterweight mounted on said elbow, and a rod rigidly attached to said collar-yoke at the other end and extending out of said chest.
7. The combination with a flue boiler having a dry-sheet, a steam-supply conduit entering said dry-sheet back of the front end thereof, and a bar secured to said dry-sheet,
of a steam chest having an arm, means to secure said arm to said bar, a collar-yoke journaled in said chest, a jet-pipe connected with said collar-yoke and adapted to be revolved in a plane substantially parallel with the adjacent boiler end, and an operating rod for said collar-yoke.
