EDWARD MORRIS HARDESTY, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO THE LEATHEROID MANUFACTURING .OOMPANY, OF KENNE- BUNK, MAINE, A CORPORATION OF MAINE.
TRUNK.
Patented Sept. 18, 1906.
Application filed December 13,1905. Serial No. 291,556.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EDWARD MoRRIs HAR- DESTY, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Trunks, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to trunks, and especially to such as are provided with a tray hinged in the lid thereof; and the object of my invention is to provide a simple convenient fastening to hold the tray in its place when the trunk is opened and to readily detach it when desired; and it consists in a spring-latch attached to the outside of the tray and adapted to cooperate with a rigid catch on the inside of the lid, so as to hold the tray in place or release it, as desired.
In the drawings forming part of this specification, Figure 1 represents a trunk, of which A represents the body, B the lid, and C the tray hinged therein. Fig. 2 represents a section showing details of the fastening.
Like characters of reference refer to like parts in both drawings.
Upon the front side of the tray O is a spring latch l, and upon the inside of the front of the lid B is a rigid catch 2, so arranged that when the tray is closed into the lid the latch 1 slips over and interlocks with the catch 2. A in 3 is contained in a hole bored through the side of the lid, so that when the tray is closed and the latch 1 is interlocked with the catch 2 the said pin 3 is adapted to bear upon the interlocked portion of latch 1, and when it is pressed inwardly it bears upon the springlatch 1 and unlocks it from contact with the catch 2, and thus allows the tray to open outwardly from the lid. This pin 3 is held in place by an encircling spring 4, which bears against a collar upon said pin at one end and at the other against the plate forming parts of the catch 2.
I claiin 1. In a trunk of the character specified a tray hinged in the lid thereof, a spring-latch upon one of the outer sides of said tray,a
rigid catch upon the inside of the lid of the trunk and adapted to engage the said latch, and a pin passing through the side of the lid and adapted to be pressed inwardly against the said spring-latch and thus disengage it from the catch, and thereby release the tray, substantially as hereinset forth.
2. In a trunk of the character specified a tray hinged in the lid thereof, a spring-latch upon one of the outer sides of said tray,a rigid catch upon the inside of the lid of the trunk and adapted to engage the said latch, and a pin passing through the side of the lid and adapted to be pressed inwardly against the said spring-latch and thus'disengage it from the catch, and thereby release the tray, and a spring adapted to hold said pin normally away from said latch, substantially as herein set forth.
In testimony whereof I have afliXed my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
EDWARD MORRIS HARDESTY.
