Description

PATENTED SEPT. 11, 1906.
P. HANNAN. DUSTLESS ASH SIPTER AND DRAFT REGULATOR FOR STOVES.
APPLICATION FILED JULY 7, 1906.
Web 65 32 3- a%% 0%? PATRICK HANNAN, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
DUSTLESS ASH-SIFTER AND DRAFT-REGULATOR FOR STOVES- Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 11, 1906.
Application filed July 7,1905. Serial No. 268,744.
T0 (LZZ whom, it nuty concern:
Be it known that I, PATRICK HANNAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, county of Philadelphia, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Dustless Ash- Sifters and Draft-Regulators for Stoves, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a new and useful improvement in dustless ash sifters and draft-regulators for stoves, and has for its object to provide a device located below the stove and connected to the same by a pipe leading from the ash-pit to the device, the pipe being provided with a damper, so that the draft can be taken from'the floor below and regulated by said damper and the ashes can also pass down the pipe into the device, where they can be sifted without raising any dust and the clinkers and good coal removed.
I/Vith these ends in view this invention consists in the details of construction and combination of elements hereinafter set f(1)rth and then specifically designated by the c aim.
In order that those skilled in the art to which this invention appertains may understand how to make and use the same, the construction and operation will now be described in detail, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, in which is illustrated a perspective view of a portion of a range and my device located in the cellar underneath the same.
A represents an ordinary kitchen-range, of which B is the ash-pit.
C is an opening formed through the bottom of the ash-pit, said opening being provided with a swinging damper D, adapted to be operated from the exterior of the stove.
E is a chute or large pipe leading downward from the opening 0 to the ash-sifting device F. This sifting device is in the form of a box having three openings formed through the front of the same, which openings may be closed by the doors G, G, and G The hinge of the upper door G is connected to a rod H, extending upward to the floor above, where it terminates in a crank H, so
that the door G can be opened from the floor above, and thus by opening the damper D and opening the door G additional draft can be given the stove from the cellar, and when a considerable amount of ashes accumulate in the ash-pit B the damper D can be turned and the ashes allowed to fall downward into the receptacle. Of course it is understood that when this is done all the doors in the receptacle are closed, so that no dust will escape. The ashes in falling will fall upon the sifting-screen I, and when an amount of ashes has accumulated upon said screen by reciprocating the screen the ashes can be sifted, and on sifting the ashes the damperD and doors G, G, and G will all be closed, so that no dust from the ashes can escape, The sifted ashes fall into a compartment below the screen and may be removed by open ing the door G the good coal and cinders being removed by opening the door G.
Of course it is understood that while I have shown and described a reciprocating ash-sifting screen I said screen can be made in the form of a cylinder to revolve or to be rocked, or an inclined screen can be arranged in the receptacle over which the ashes will fall in falling from the pipe E, so that the ashes will be sifted automatically by traveling over the surface of said inclined screen.
I do not wish to be limited to any details of construction, as numerous modifications as regards the construction can be made with out departing from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and useful is- In combination with a stove, an ash-sifting receptacle located below said stove, the floor of the ash-pit provided with an opening formed therethrough, a pipe or closed chute leading from said opening to the ash-sifting receptacle, a damper for opening or closing the opening of the ash-pit, said damper adapted to be operated from the exterior of the stove, a screen within the ash-sifting receptacle, the front of the ash-sifting receptacle provided with three openings, swinging doors adapted to close said openings, means for opening or closing the upper door from the floor above, the upper opening acting as In testimony whereof I have hereunto af-' a draft-opening, the middle opening being fixed my signature in the presence of two 10 for tlhe .pufi'pose of peifiovlilngl the good coal gifsubscribing Witnesses.
tert e as es are si te ,t e ower opening e- 5 ing for the purpose of removing the sifted PATRICK HANNAN' ashes and the upper 0 ening being for the Witnesses: pu ose of admitting raft to the stove, as MARY E. HAMER, an for the purpose specified L. W. MORRISON.
