Description
w. c. DOUTHETT.
Chur n.
Patented Oct. 13; 186.8.
# wwwsaw gate-mfim WILLIAM C. DOUTHETT, OFROCHEL-LE, ILLINOIS.
, Letters Patent No. 83,'050,dated 00mm 13, 1868.
The Schedule referred to in-these Letters' Patent and making part or the same.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it. known that 1, WILLIAM G. Dournnr'r, of Rochelle, in the county of Ogle, and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Ghurns; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clean: and exact description of the'sarne, reference being had tothe accompanying drawings, and theletters andfigures marked thereon, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 represents a side elevation of my improved churn, with the dasher down;
Figure 2, the same view, with the dasher partly raised; and
Figure 3, a detached view of the arm-which contains To enable those skilled in the art to manufacture and use my invention, I will proceed to describe the same with particularity.
I construct the churn, A, in any of the known ways of .constructinga dasher-churn, and the standardl) I construct the same inprinciple as described in my Letters Patent, No. 77,873, but the form of the standard shown in this application, which is a ribbed casting, I consider stronger and stiiier.
The crank E has its hearings in the standard D,
which I cast in a single piece, as shown in figs. 1
and. 2.
v The weighted arm has jaws, H, at one end, between which the ringfI is hung, by the trunnions J,
and within the ring I there is a piece, K, hung on,
trunnions L. The arm or rod," 0, which clasps the dasher 0, passes through the-piece -K, and on account of the double action, caused by the piece Kturning within the swinging ring I, the directionof the hole in K, through which the rod 0 passes, readily turns towards the dasherO, and thereby prevents any fliction on the rod 0, as the churn is being operated, on
account of the said rod binding in the piece K.
There is a hub, I, on the end of the crank-rod E, through which the arm F passes, it being held in place by the set-screw Q. By turning said set-screw, the arm F can be moved in the hub P, thereby regulatingthe length of the' stroke of thedasher.
This device may be applied in a washing-machine,
or any other machine where it maybe useful, to convert a rotary to a reciprocating motion.
Having fully described the construction and operation of my improvement,
What I claim, and-desire to secure by Letters Patcut, is
1. The double oscillating or swing-joint, when constructed substantially as above described, and for the purposes set forth.
2. The hub P, in combination with the adjustabl rod F, arms H, ring 1, piece K, and rod 0, all operating to regulate the length of the stroke of the dasher (l ,as well as to produce the stroke itself, substantially.
as described.
. WIVL. O. DOUTHETT.
