uNrrnn STATES PATENT OFFICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 4, 19u06.
Application led March 27,1906. Serial No. 308,305.
To all whoml it may concerm.
Be it known that I, WILLIAM EBBING, a citlzen of the United States, residing at San Francisco, in the county of San Francisco a'nd State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Condiment- I Iolders, of which the following is a specifica# t1on. .l This invention relates to new` and useful improvements in' condiment-holders; and it particularly pertains-to that type known as twin condiment-holders. f
In connection with a condiment-holder of the above type it is a primary consideration of the present invention to roviclel novel means for maintaining the pe orated tops of the condiments-sections relatively in an open and closed position, and toward the attainment of the above object I have provided simultaneously-operated cut-offs for the perforzfifted tops and a lever for moving said cuto s.
The detailed construction will appear in the course of the'following description, in which reference is had to the accompanying drawin s, tion, li e numerals designatin like parts throughout the several views, w erein Fi ure 1 is a section, partlyin elevation, on the line 1 1 of Fig. 2. tion of the condiment-holder forming a part of this invention. Fig. 3 is a top plan view thereof, showing the relative arrangement of the cut-offs and their appurtenant arts. Fig. 4 is a-central longitudlnal section t ereof on linea 4 of Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a viewshowing in top 'planl and side elevation the detailed construction of the supporting-frame for the cut-o'-operating device. Fig. 6 is a detailed top plan of one element of said supporting'- frame, and Fig. 7 is a detailed plan view of an element to be hereinafter specifically referred to.
In the practical embodiment of my invention I employ a pair of condiment-holders'l and 2, united by an integral web 3, which isso shaped on one side as toform a handle or grip 4, provided with a longitudinal slot or recess 5 in its upper` surface and for a purpose to be described. .T he web 3 terminates at some distance from the upper ends of the con-- diment- holders 1 and 2, soas to leave a s ace 6 therebetween. At the to of each o the condiment-holders-1 and 2li have rovided split collars 7 of flexible material w 'ch surround said condiment-holders and are re-y forming a part of this specilica-- Fig. 2 is a front elevatained thereupon by a frictional engagement. The collars 7 are formed adjacent their free ends with parallel spaced extensions 8, which when the-collars are assembled in position confront one another, as is shown in Fig. 5. The free ends 8 are' united in confronting pairs by cross-pieces 9, (shown in detail in Fig. 7,) suitabl secured by 'rivets 10- or other approved orm of fastening means-and are'formed with a central rectangular opening 11.
The collars 7 are each provided with a pair of oppositely-disposed outwardly-extending studs 12, which pass through suitableapertures in the perforated dredgingcaps 13 and serve as securin means therefor. u on each of t e caps 13 are cut-offsll, w ich are centrally pivoted by a headed pin 15. The cut-offs 14 are each provider-lwlth,y
openings 16, arranged in ornamental series and designed to be brought into registry with the perforations in the caps 13 when it is desiredto discharge the contents of the hold# ers 1 or 3. The cut-offs 14 are each provided With extensions 17, the extensions ofthe one cut-off overlapping in su erposed relation the extension of the ot er cut-oil". Said extensions are provided at their ends with curved slots'18,- coextensive throughout and adapted to be normally inregistry.
A rod 19 extends through the alined openings 11 in the cross-pieces 9 and is formed at its outer end with an upwardly-extending 4pin 20, Which-passes through the slots 18 in their registering relation, as is clearly shown in Fig-3. The rod 19 is further provided with a handle 21 on its free end land at a distance from the handle carries a depending leaf-spring 22, the end of which projects into the slot or recess 5 in the handle lland bears against the wall thereof, so as` to retain the rod 19 in a predetermined normal position.
In operation the cut-offs -14 are' normally relatively disposed, as shown in Fig. 3, wherein the openings 16 arein registry with the o enings 1n one of the caps 13, but4 are out o registry with the openings in the other cap 13. When it is desired for any reason to use a differentcondiment from that which is discharged in the normal 'osition of the cutoifs, as shown in Fig. 3, t e rod`19 is pushed forward against the tension of the spring 22 and the cut-offs 14 are partially rotated in converging directions until the ends of the slots 18bear against the pin 2() and restrict the movement of said'cut-offs.V In the partial Mounted IOO.
rotation of the cut-OHS upon their pivots 15 the relative positions thereof are reversed,- and the cut-off Which has its aperture 16 normally in registry with the apertures in the cap 13 becomes out of registry therewith, and the cut-off normally out of registry with the cap 13 comes into registry with said ca upon the forward movement of the sliding ar 19. It Will thus be. seen that-the collars .7 and cross-pieces 9 coact to form 'a supportingbearing for the slidable rod 19.
Havm'gfully described my invention, what I claim is-` 1. The combination With a`/ condimentholder lcomprising independent condimentreceptacles and perforated covers therefor, of movable cut-OHS carried by said covers and a said cut-offs and adapted to 'impart simultaneous movement thereto.
2. The combination with a condimentholder comprising independent condimentreceptacles and .perforated covers therefor, of Imovable cut-offs designed to be moved across the face of said perforated covers and a spring-held lever having connection with said cut-offs and adapted to impart simultaneous movement thereto.
3. The combination with va condimentholder' comprising independent condimentreceptacles and perforated covers therefor, of perforated movable cut-offs designed to be moved across the face= of said covers anda' spring-held lever having common connection Withsaid cut-offs and adapted to impart s1- -multaneous movement thereto.
4. The combination with a condimentholder comprislng vindependent condimenty receptacles and perforated covers therefor, of
perforated movable cutoffs pivotally mounted upon said covers and designed to be in relatively registering and non-registering position with said covers and a lever having common connection with said cut-offs and designed to impart 'simultaneous movement thereto.
5. The combination With a condimentholder comprising independent receptacles I and perforated covers therefor, of perforated spring-held lever having connection With cut-offs pivotally mounted upon said covers and relatively in registering and non-registering position therewith, a slidable'spring-held lever having common connection with said cut-offs and adapted to impart simultaneous partial rotary movement thereto, and supporting-bearings for said lever carried by said receptacles.
In testimony whereof I aHiX my signature in presence of tWo Witnesses.
WILLIAM EBBING.
