Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 21, 1906.
Application filed September 21, 1905. Serial No. 279,565.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, Josi'z RosALns, a citizen of the Philippine Islands, residing at the city of Manila, Island of Luzon, Philippine Islands, have invented new and useful Irnprovements in Cigars, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to the process of terminating the end of a cigar without the use of paste or adhesive, and has for its object to render the manufactured article cleaner, more sanitary, and more agreeable.
In the manufacture of cigars from leaf tobacco it is necessary that means be adopted for preserving the shape of the cigar and to prevent the same from falling apart that the free end of the outer wrapper be secured in place, and this has hitherto been effected by the a plication of paste or other adhesive to said ee end, which caused successive folds of said outer wrapper to adhere and remain in place.
Instead of depending upon the agency of an adhesive for the securing of the free end of the outer wrapper I employ for the securing of the free end of the outer wrap er of the cigar a process whereby the shape 0 the cigar when rolled is left with a long and slender end of which the free end of the outer wrapper forms a part, and which free end is then tied in a secure knot, which holds the outer wrapper absolutely and securely in place and renders unnecessary the use or employment of any forei matter in the manufacture of the cigar. T e process whereby this end is accomplished is more elaborately described as follows:
The drawing represents a view in perspective of the finished product of my invention.
The cigar is rolled in any desired shape and size, and the process of rolling so far as the filler, and binder are concerned is the usual and ordinary process. For a wrapper a full half-leaf of suitable size is 'selected and is applied in the usual manner, either in spiral folds or otherwise, applying the oint of the leaf at the combustion end of file cigar in such a way that when the entire cigar is covered by the wrapper there remains free a curved base of the leaf. Instead of cutting this curved base in the form suitable to cover the point of the cigar and pasting same over such point, as has heretofore been done, the curved base of the leaf is tightly rolled upon itself into a long and slender stem. This stem is then tied into a simple knot, fitting close upon the oint of the cigar, and the cigar is then finis ed by cutting away the surlus end close to the cigar.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
A cigar consisting of a suitable filler and a wrapper therefor wound around said filler, said wrapper being twisted and knotted at the point of the cigar, substantially as-described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
J. ROSALES.
