This invention relates to cigarettes, more particularly to cigarettes of the tipped type, and has for its object to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a cigarette tipped in a manner for keepin the nicotine from off of the lips of the smo er, preventing the filling from passing from the wrapper to the mouth of the smoker, and further acting as j a means to keep in place the filling in an open lid package of cigarettes.

Further objects of the invention are to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a tipped cigarette which is simple in its construction and arrangement, thoroughly efficient for the purpose intended and comparatively inexpensive to manufacture.

With the foregoing and other objects in view the invention consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter more specifically described, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein is shown an embodiment of the invention, but it is to be understood that changes, variations and modifications can be resorted to which falLwithin the scope of the claims hereunto appended.

Figures 4 to '2' both inclusive are elevations illustrating successively the steps of the method prior to the flange forming step of {the ti I so strip is materially less than that of the web. The strip is secured to one side marginal portion D of the web B and projects a substantial distance from the edge of such marginal wrappers, that part of the strip carried by each wrapper projects from one end of the latter, as at F when the cigaretteis formed by combining the filling 3 and wrapper 1 in connection with that part of the strip which provides the tip.

After the cigarette is made, that part of the portion of the strip which provides the tip and projects from one end of the cigarette is fused to form an inwardly extending annular flange 5 acting as a means to keep the filling 3 in the wrapper, preventing the filling from dropping into the mouth of the smoker and further acting as a means to keep the nicotine away from the lips of the user.

That part of the strip which is secured to the wrapper and provides the tip extends cir cumferentially of the latter and issecured together simultaneously with the wrapper, when the latter encloses the fillings.

The element which provides the tip 2-, can be secured to the wrapper 1, after the latter has been cut from a web, in lieu of securing an elongated strip to the paper web before the cutting of the latter into wrappers.

The material which forms the tip 2 can project any desirable distance from the end of the cigarette so as to provide a flange of any suitable width after said projecting portion is fused, and the fusing of the latter is after the wrapper and fillings have been combined.

The fusing of the projecting portion of the element which provides the tip 2 prevents any crimping of the wrapper 1 or crimping of the tip at the point of joinder of the body portion with the flange. Further due to the fusing of the projecting portion it will provide a flange which is of slightly greater thickness than the thickness of the body of the tip.

It is thought that the many advantages of a tipped cigarette, in accordance with this invention can be readily understood, and although the preferred embodiment of the portion D as at E. When the web is cut into 6;

invention is as illustrated and described, yet it is to be understood that changes in the details of construction can be had which will fall within the scope of the invention as claimed.

WhatI claim is:

1. A method of manufacturin a tipped cigarette consisting in permanent y securing a flexible strip to one side marginal portion of the outer face of a paper web in projected relation with respect to a lengthwise edge of said web, cutting the combined strip and web into wrappers and with each wrapper provided with a tip forming member in pro]ected relation with respect to one end of the wrapper, securing the wrapper in encompassing position with respect to a filling, and then forming the projecting part of the tip forming member into an inwardly extending, annular flange abutting one end of said fillmg.

2. A method of manufacturing a tipped cigarette consistingin permanently securing a flexible strip to one side marginal portion of the outer face of a paper web in projected relation with respect to a lengthwise edge of said Web, cutting the combined strip and web into wrappers and with each wrapperprovided with a tip forming member in projected relation with respect to one end of the wrapper, securing thewrapper in encompassing position with respect to a filling, and then fusing the projected portion of said tip forming member to provide an inwardly extending, annular fiange abutting against one end of said filling.
