This invention. relates to a safety gasbunner of, the class wherein provision is made for; automatically shutting off the supply of gas when thegas ceases to burn.
The invention is especially adapted to be applied. togas-burners employing a mantle such, for, instance, as the VVelsbach burner.
In accordance with this invention the gassupplyv pipeis provided with a valve having (:06 erating with it a device for automatica y closing the valve, which device is moved into its operative position when the valve is opened and is retained therein by a thermostatic device located above said valve in, theheating'zone of the Welsbaoh burner. The. thermostatic device is provided with a member which is moved longitudinally in one direction. by the heat of the burner and is moved longitudinally in the opposite direction when the burner cools.
These and other features of this invention willbepointed out in the claims at the end of this specification.
Figure 1 is an elevation of a Welsbach gasburner provided with a safety device embodyingthis invention, the parts bein shown in the. position they occupy when t e valve is closed; Fig. 2, a side elevation, on a smaller scale, of. parts shown in Fig. 1 looking toward the left; Fig. 3, a side elevation showing the gas cock or valve in its open position; Fi s. 4 and 5, details in side elevation to be re erred to; and Fig. 6, a detail, on an enlarged scale, tobe referred to.
Referring to the drawings, o represents a fitting provided with a gas-outlet tip or pipe 1), upon, which is fitted a VVelsbach burner c, havingamantle d, all of which parts are or may be of,- any suitable or desired construction.
The fitting a is provided with a cook or valve 0, havin a handle or thumb-piece f, and upon whic 1 is looscl mounted a sleeve g, having an arm. h, said s eeve bein ada ted to bemoved in one direction with tfie va ve e when the latter isturned into its open 081%- tion and to be moved in, the op osite d reotion to close the valve by a coile spring't',,as will be described. The finger j is beveled or inclined to permit the arm h, which is also beveled at its upper end, to pass between said 'fingers and behind the finger k, by which it-is engaged land prevented from being moved backward iwhile the gas is being lighted at the burner c. 5 The finger-carrying piece or bar m in thepnesl ent instance is attached to or forms part of a lmetal piece or bar n, forked at its up or andilo'wer ends to encircle an upright re p, fastoned at its lower end to a bar or ,plate g, projecting from the fitting a above thevalve'e. The rod p is extended longitudinallyof the burner c and u into the heatin zone of the same and pre erably outside t e mantle d thereof and has fitted over it a metal tube 1 0, preferably brass, which is fastened at its upper end to the rod p and has its lower end in engagement with the finger-earryingpiecen.
The tube 10 constitutes a thermostat which when heated expands longitudinally and forces the bar a downward against thc plate 9, thereby sprin 'nn or bowing out thebar m and moving the oc ing-fingerj into thepath of movement of the arm. 72, thereby preventing the said arm from returning to its starting position until the thermostatic tube has returned to its normal position, which takes place when, the flame at the VtTelsbach-burner 1s extinguished.
In operation with the apparatus herein shown the valve 6 is first turned from its closed position (shownin Figs. 1 and 2)intoits openposition. (Shown in Pig. 3. j Duri'ngthis movement of the valve thesafety device or arm h is brought behind the 'finger k, (see Fig. 4,) which serves to holdita ainst the action of the spring 11. The as is t on lighted and the heat from the gvelsbach burner expands the thermostatic tube lO-and moves the finger piece or bar m so as to removethc finger k from engagement with the arm h and bring the finger 7' into the path of movement of said arm, which latter is moved by the s rin 'i into engagement with the fin or 3'. the valve d may be partially closed without disengaging the arm from the finger, so that the gas may be turned down. if for any reason the burner-ilame should be extinguishedas, for instance, by being accidentally blown out or by the pressure of the gas falling below a predetermined point-the thermostatic tube or rod 10 is moved longitudinally upward, thereby removing the linger from ongagement with the arm h and permitting the spring t' to turn the sleeve 9 and its attached arm back into its starting position. (Represented in Fig. 2.) If the valve a should be either wholly or partially opened, it will be carried back into its closed position by the sleeve g, which in the present instance is provided with a lug or projection 20, which extends into the path of movement of a projection or device 21 on the valve 6. The sleeve 9 is turned to cause the arm h to engage the lingers is when the valve is opened by the projection 21 on the valve engaging the projection 20 on the sleeve.
I claim 1. The combination with a gas-burner provided with a mantle and with a valve controlling the fiow' of gas to said burner, of a sleeve loose on said valve, an arm on said sleeve, means on said valve cooperating with means on said sleeve to move said sleeve and arm when the valve is opened and to permit said valve to be partially closed independently of said arm, a finger-carrying piece movable toward and from said arm in a substantially vertical plane, and a thermostat located in the heating zone of the burner and connected with said linger-carrying piece to effect movement of said finger-carrying piece in a substantially vertical plane in one direction, substantially as described.
2. The combination with a as-burner provided with a mantle and wit 1 a valve controlling the fiow of gas to said burner, of a sleeve loose on said valve, an arm on said sleeve, means on said valve cooperating with means on said sleeve to move said sleeve and arm when the valve is opened and to permit said valve to be partially closed independently of said arm, a finger-carrying piece movable toward and from said arm in a substantially vertical plane, and a thermostatic tube having one end free and engaging the said finger carrying piece and having its other end extended into the heating zone of the mantle and fastened against movement, substantially as described.
3. The combination with a as-burner provided with a mantle and wit a valve controlling the flow of as to said burner, a device cooperating wit fi said valve to be moved thereby when the valve is opened and to move the valve into its closed position, means to engage said device and retain it from actin to close said valve While the burner is lig ted, and a lon itudinally-movable rod having one end anchored in the heating zone of the mantle and its other end free to move and operate said retaining means, substantially as described 4. The combination with a gas -ln1rner provided with a mantle and with a valve controlling the flow of gas to said burner, a device cooperating with said valve to be moved thereby when the valve is opened and to move the valve into its closed position, means to engage said device and retain it from acting to close said valve while the burner is lighted, and a longitudinally-movable rod having one end extenr led into the heating zone of the burner and its other end cooperating with the said retaining means to engage said means with said device when the burner is lighted, substantially as described.
5. The combination with a fitting providcd with a gas-outlet pipe, a burner fitted upon said gas-outlet pipe and provided with a mantle, a valve in said fitting to control the supply of gas to the said burner, a safety device cooperating with said valve to close the same, a thermostat located above the said valve within the heating zone of the said burner, and means located in proximity to the valve to control said safety device and actuated by the said thermostat when the burner is lighted to engage said safety device, substantially as described.
6. The combination with a gas burner provided with a mantle, a valve controlling the flow of gas to said burner, a safety device cooperating with said valve to close the same, a thermostat located in the heating zone of the mantle, and means movable longitudinally of the burner and cot'iperating with said thermostat and with said device to prevent the latter from closing the valve while the burner is lighted, substantially as described.
7. The combination with a gas-burner, of a valve controlling the flow of gas to said burner, a safety device 006 crating with said valve to close the same, a thermostat located in the heating zone of the burner, and a longitudinally movable device separate from the thermostat and interposed between said thermostat and said safety device and controlling the operation of the latter, substantially as described.
8. The combination with a gas-burner, of a valve controlling the flow of gas to said burner, a safety device cooperating with said valve to close the same, a longitudinally-movable rod having one end anchored within the heating zone of the burner and having its other end extended to near said valve, and means inter osed between the said rod and said safety device and actuated by said thermostat when the burner is lighted, substantially as described.
9. The combination with a gas-burner, of a valve controlling the flow of gas to said burner, a safety device cooperating with said valve to close the same, a thermostatic tube having one end anchored in the heating zone of the burner and its other end free, and means interposed between said free end of the tube and said safety device and actuated by said thermostat when the burner is lighted, substantially as described.
10. The combination with a gas-burner provided with a mantle and with a valve controlling the flow of gas to said burner, of a safety device cooperating with said valve to close the same, a thermostat located in the proximity to the mantle, and means located in proximity to the valve and controlling the operation of said safety device, said means 15 being operated by said thermostat when the gas is lighted to engage said safety device, substantially as described.
