AUTOMATIC CUT-OFF FOR GAS-PIPES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 729,969, dated June 2, 1 903.
Application filed March 14,1903. Serial No. 147,805. (No model.)
T0 at whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FRANK P. SOMERS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Automatic Out-Offs for Gas- Pipes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as willen'able others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, andto the figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to automatic cut-offs for gas-pipes; and the object thereof is to form an improved device, including a valve actuated by a thermostatic rod or tube, for closing the pipe when the gas-supply fails.
The invention is particularly adapted and intended for supply-pipes to gas stoves or furnaces and in one'form includes a supplemental or pilot burner, which may be distant from the main burner and which'controls the ther-' mostat.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of the apparatus adapted for a gas-furnace. Fig. 2 is'a'longitudinal section thereof. Fig. 3 is an elevation, partly in section, of a modification adapted for gasstove use. a
A gas-supply pipe is indicated at 6, having therein a disk valve 7, which seats itself in a diaphragm 8. Under thevalve and tending to close same is a spring 9. The valve-stem 10 extends through a glandin the valve-casing and carries at the head thereof a fingerpiece 11, whereby the valve may be pressed in and manually opened.
At 12 is indicated-a thermostatic tube or rod expansible under heat. This is supported by a bracket 13, so that it is in longitudinal alinement with the valve-stem. This tube or rod is threaded for adjustment where it engages the bracket'and is fixed at adjustment by nut 14. Also it is surrounded by a cylinder 15, which is attached to the bracket and has a number of air-holes 15. A small flame burns within the cylinder, having a supply of gas through the tube 16, which taps the main pipe beyond the valve.
The fiamein the cylinder 15 normally causes sufficient expansion of the element 12 to cause it to force in the valve-stem and open the valve, and this condition continues while the flow of gas exists. When the flow stops, the flame goes out, and the resulting contraction of the thermostatic device permits the spring to lift and close the valve.- To start the flow again, the valve may be depressed by the finger-piece and the gas lighted in the cylinder.
In the modification shown in Fig. 3the same valve arrangement appears;-but the thermostatic tube or rod (indicated at 15") is supported above the main burner, (indicated at 17,) and as long as the burners are lighted the tube is expanded and holds the valve open. When the burners are extinguished by non-supply or other cause, the contraction of the thermostat permits closure of the valve.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The combination with a gas-supply pipe, having a spring-pressed reciprocatory valve "therein, of an expansible member disposed in longitudinal alinement with the valve-stem and disconnected .therefromand adapted to press thereon to open the valve, and a burner adjacent said member, connected to the pipe beyond the valve.
2. The combination with a gas-supply pipe, a reciprocatory valve therein, and a spring tending to close the same, of an expansible -men1ber supported in longitudinal alinement with the stem of the valve, a protective inclosure for the member, and a burner in the inclosureconnected to the supply-pipe beyond the valve. I
