APPAREL-COLLAR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 21, 1906:
Application filed September 14, 1905, Serial No. 278,509.
To all whom it may concern.-
, Be it known that I, FRED DRAPER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Danville in the county of Vermilion and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and, useful Improvements-in Bi-Button Collars;
and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use-the same.
My invention relates to improvements in collars, and more particularly to means for insurin the roper set of the collar around the neo of t e wearer.
The object of the,invention is to provide a turn-down collar with a simple, durable, inex ensive, and efficient means for holdin the points of the collar in contact when it is uttoned around the neck, so that a perfect fit will be insured and no discomfort or inconvenien'oe will be caused the wearer.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a turndown collar with m improvements applied thereto, the collar sing in its buttoned or closed position; and Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the collar opened or unbuttoned.
In practicing my invention I construct a collar 1 in the usual manner and with the usual lower buttonholes 2, which en age the button 3 upon the neckband of the Sikh and provide in the upper portion of the meeting ends or flaps 4 5 of the collar-- extra button holes 6, which are adapted to receive an additional fastening-button 7. These buttonholes 6 are preferabl vertically disposed, as shown, and arranged at the upper portion of the fla s 4 5 so that the to or upper edge of the co ar will be held close to insure a perfect fit. The revision of the buttonholes 6 and theuse o the button 7 prevents the usual button 2 from acting as a pivot and permitting the ends of the collar to swingto en or apart. Thisadditional fasteningulton 7 will also prevent the collar from mashing down or collapsing in warm weather. It
may also be used for attaching a necktie thereto, so that the latter may be worn high, as is desirable in some cases. If the tie is fastened tofthe T PPer button, both buttons will be concealed with certain styles of ties.
Thelgovision of the buttonholes 6 does not inte any we with the laundering of ,the'collar and will ast as long as the col ar Thefia i is curved, as shown at 4 to perpt-Its being lapped to and underneath the flap 5, and said flap 5 is interposed between the fold of the opposite end of the collar and its neckband, so as to conceal the lar or portion of the flaps when lap ed toget er. By reversing the buttonho s the up er ones of the flaps are constructed vertica for the reason that if the same were constructed crosswise the same as the lower ones it would be impossible to adjust a button therein, as the meeting ends of the collar are arrangedso close together that if the buttonholes were crosswise at this point they would be partially concealed by the ends of the collar and, as before stated, the button could not be placed in the buttonholes if the same were made crosswise. Further, the vertical buttonholes when the stud engages the same serve to hold the upper ends of the'collar togcther to prevent lateral slip ing movement of the same as will be rea ily seen. The button 7 wili not cause any discomfort or inconvenience to the wearer and can be very quickly applied to and removed from the collar.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.
I-wish it to be understood that my improved turn-down collar is provided with a neckband having flaps or extensions 4 and 5, constructed of different sizes and lengths, each having a pair of buttonholes arranged in line one above the other, the upper ones of each pair being constructed vertical and arranged a )proximately near the vertical edge line on the opposite ends of the turn-down portion of the collar. The longer flap 5 is slightly curved at its up or corner, as shown at 5', to permit of its eing interposed between the opposite end of the collar and neck -band. The shorter flap or extension 4 is provided with a curved edge 4, which extends below the central edge portion of the same. The curvature 4 serves to reduce the thickness of the two flaps 4 and 5 when lapped together, whereby the neck of the wearer is prevented from being pinched between the two edges of the flaps. Said arrangement of the two flaps also relieves the neck to a great extent from abrasion when the two flaps are brought to ether. Further, the two vertical buttonho es register one with the other and a collar-button secured in mid hnttonholes prevents latteritl movement 5 terpe'ised between the opposite end of the ol' the two lhrps at their upper portions when secured together.
.lllLVlllgilltlSdOSUl'lllHi1H) invention, what claim as new, and desire to secure by Let terb Patent, is
A turn-down collar comprising the neckbzind cmmtructed with llzipS' of ditl'orcnt sizes and lengths, (tttfil of which is provided with a pair of huttonholes arranged in line one above the other, the upper ones being constructed vertical and arranged npproxi' niately near the vertical edge line on the o positc ends of the turn-down portion of the collar, said longer ll-Ltp having a slight curve at its upper corner to permit of its being in i turn-down portion of the collar and neckband, the snutller lltLP being; provided with a curved edge whi h extends helow the central edge portion of the sumo, said curvature serving to reduce the thickness oi the two flaps when lapped together and the vertical huttonholes serving to register one with the other, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing wit- THYRSQS,
