Refrigerator.
Patented Oct. 6,1868.

. Leners Patent No. Sessanta@ 06am 6,1868.
IMPROYED ICE-PRESERVER.
@its .gagnait aferra tu in itat tetbrt @tout mit mittag putt 'uf tigt ramt.
To ALL WHoM TT MAY AeoNeERNz' y Be it known thatI, JUIA W. D.' P'JJTEN, of the city, county, and State of New York, have inventeda new and'improvedIce-Preserver; and I d ohereby declare that the following is a full. elear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had tol the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in whichi Figurel is a vertical section. e v
Figure 2 is a similar section, showing anotherform of boX. v
' The obj ect of this invention is to provide a neat and cheap receptacle, which will protect ice, food, medicines,
Xtc., from the action ofthe air; audhaving its walls made of a substance, herein described, which is ay remarkable l non-conductor of heat,-and will maintain around the enclosed contents of the receptacle a uniform temperature,
thereby preventing the melting of the ice, and the decomposition of the food, mcdicines, chemicals, or other v article'to be preserved.
In the drawings, A indicates a dome-shaped box orl coyer, tting air-tight around 'and upon a detachable bottom, B, the bottom having a vertical dange, b, around its rim, so as to constitute a shallow pan, in which the ice, iz', may be placed, and the food or otherartclesbeing placed upon the ice, as seen at F. The-box or cover' A may beprovided with a handle, C, and may be'made in any other convenient form, if preferred, and may be ornamented at pleasure.`
Thebottom or pan B, iig. 1, is composed of tin, iron, silver, wood, 'or any other material that will be water and' air-tight. Y v l A v The walls and roofoil the cover A are composed of paper and pasteboard, a, on the outside lined-with mica, a', on the inside-the micalbeing attached to the paper walls by some adhesive substance, or being stitched, riveted, or'jotherwise suitably fastened thereto. v l
The object of the paperor pasteboard is to prevent the action of the outside air upon the ice, food, Sto., and to furnish a strong non-conductor of heat, paper being'oueof the best known substances for'that purpose. The object of the mica lining is to prevent the taste ofthe food, medicines, &c., lfrom being affected by the paper or' pasteboard. Neither substance, independent of the other, Willanswer the purpose of preserving the ice and Yother articles from the action of. the air and of heat or cold, without having their taste and' smell sensibly affected, .but combined, as described, fand employed as a material for the construction of covers, boxes, dto., they answer the purpose admirably.
Ithas been found by practical test, that in a receptaclesimilar tothat shown in iig.; 1, ice will last one-third vor one-half longer than in any other ice-preserver now incommon use.
The form of the box or cover is, lof course, not a material part of the invention. The form shown iu iig.
'1, and'herein described, is believed to be as simple, cheap, and convenient as anyfor preserving ice in 'connection with articles of bod, butfor preserving other substances, such as dentifrices, soaps, medicines, toilet and .other perfumed articles, 36o., other forms may be more conveniently employed, which it is unnecessary for me to describe or show.
Having thus described myinveution, what I claimas new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
An iee-preserver, consisting of a'box) or cover, Yhaving an outsidewall of paper or. p'asteboard, lined with mica. on the inside, substantiallyas described.
l' JULIA 'W. D. PATTEN.
