Description

`HENRY H, KELLEY, or PHILADELPHIA,-PENNSYLVANIA.
Letters Patent No. 82,847', dated October 6, 1,868.v
AnitriteVBMENT 1N sssn-rssrsnsits.

TO ALL WHOM IT MAYl CONCERN:
Be it known that I, HENRY H. KELLnY,of city and county of Philadelphia, aniLStateof- Pennsylvania,
have invented a new and useful Device for Preventing the Battling of Window-subes; and I do hereby declare` the following to be a full, clear, and-exact description of the same, suicient to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to fully understand and use the same, reference being had tothe accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, in whichl Figure 1 is a front view of a window-sash and frame, with myinvention'applied thereto.
Figure 2 is a transverse vertical section thereof, in line :v z, iig. I. I Figure 3 is a similar view in line y y. Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures vso that the sashes can be held firmly when at their highest or lowest points.
In the drawings, A represents'an ordinary window-frame, and B the sash thereof. C is an elastic roller, constructed of rubber or other suitable material, and having a bearing in arms or brackets, a, which are secured to the bead D, in such a manner that the said roller lshall liev trausverselyagainst the window-sash B. Its diameter shall be such as to bear firmly againstthe window-sashes, 'yet rotate lfreely, and allow the sashes to be readily raised and lowered. e v f i In order to prevent any rattling or shaking when the sash is at its highest or lowest point-I secure to the sash a wedge-shaped block, UE', consisting of a strip'of metal, wood, p'orcelaim or other suitable material, con-.
structed'in the form of a wedge, or inclined plane, and secured to the window-sash in line with the roller` C, so
as to oo me in contact with it,l whether said roller shall be at the top or bottom of'bead D, or at any'intermediate,
points thereof. V
It will be perceived that when the upper sash is lowered, or the lower sash is raised, the roller will bear against one of the sides of the sash at all times, and thus force said side against the corresponding bead of the window-frame, therebyholding the sash. So soon as the wedge comes in contactwith the elastic roller, the
Alatter becomes flattened at la certain point lof its periphery, and continues to Hatten as the wider part of the wedge is brought against the roller. p The friction between the two` increases lgradually until the sash'is `entirely raised or lowered, when it will be iirmly held in place, and will not rattle orv shake,'owi'ng to the pressure of, Athe roller. I i A The sash is easily raised or lowered, since the roller soon clears the' wedge, and then oil'ers its usual resistance. I am awarethat elastic rollers have been applied to window-sashes and frames, to hold the former at any height, and thus dispense with weights and cords;v and Iam alsol aware that the rollers have been jammed'by means of diagonal and rounded grooves; butsuchdevices'require to be let into the wood-work, or necessitate thev cutting of a portion thereof, but my invention may be a'pplied to any sash'and frame now in use, since it is merel-y secured thereto, and requires no diiferent construction of their parts. It is readily applicable to cars, .steamboata and thel like. l
Two wedges and rollers may be placedat corresponding sides of the frame and sash, but one for each willY answer the purpose suciently well.
i The described arrangement' may be reversed; that is to Say, the roller may be appliedto the sash, and the wedge tothe frame.
Iam aware that the wedge and elastic roller arenot new inthemselves. Having thus described my invention, what- I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is The' arrangement of the elastic roller C and wedge E, and operating substantially as herein represented and described. A
To the above I have signed m'y name,'thisveighteenth day of.April, 1868.
' v HENRY H. KELLEY.
Witnesses:
WMVA. WIEDERSHEIM, H. HYNEMAN.
y My invention consists in novel means for preventing the rattling or shaking of window-slashes, whether. Acaused by wind, the passing byoi` wagons, or any other cause. l
This is accomplished by applying respectively to the `window-sash and frame, a wedge and an elastic roller, i i
