IMPROVEMENT IN Kers ron HYVDIIANTfcooK.

Be it known that I, PATRICK H. GRIFIN, of the city of Albany, State of New York, have invented a new and usefulMethodof Constructing Keys for Operating the StopCocksof Hydrants, or for analogous purposes; i
and I declare the -following speciication,-with the drawings forming part thereof, lto be a full and complete description 'of my invention. v I
Figurerepresents the key in perspective. Figure 2, the same', as seen from above. Figure 3, the sama'with the near half of the socket removed, to show its application toel stop-cock- Similar letters denote the same vparts of the apparatus. v y A represents an ordinary stop-cock, with its usual faucet-handle, B. The key is composed of .a socketv 01 oblong'hollow block of cast metal, C, fitted to pass freely over the faucet-handle, the long direction of its cavity fitting'o'ver the handle lengthwise, and the narrow along ,its sides. The upper part is iitted witha tapering bore or socket, E, to t the lower part of a stem or rod, S, by which the key is operated; The end of this stem should be square, tapering slightly downwards, as shown, althoughit may be made round, but then it'must be secured by a pin, 'to prevent its turning around in the socket. l
I The rod is workedby a handle or wrench, D, fitted to it inthe usual manner. f
The block is to be made of composition, c ast iron,'or nalleable iron, and the rod 'S of wrought iron or steel.
The way in-which such keys are-usually' made, is to. forge the socket of wrought iron, and then weld the rod to it, which is an expensive operation.
That which I consider to be my improv-ement is the casting of the socket of a cheap metal, and connecting with it, as shown, the rod or stem, all which can be done for a much less sum than by anymode of making keys for stop-cocks now in u se, thus making a new and a cheaper article for the public.
What I' claim as my invention, and desire to secure hy'Letters Patent, isl As an article of manufacture, the' cast-metal socket C, constructed substantially as described and for the purpose set forth. v y,
PATRICK H.'GRIFFIN.
