Description

PATBNTED JULY 31. 1906..
L. BOBHM SUSPBNSORY BANDAGB ANDDR NG RETAINER.;
` v -APPLIUAT'IoN lHmm rms followin (UNITED STATES PATENT.- OFFICE.
JOSEPH L. B013 Beit known'that I, JOSEPH L. BOEHM, a citizen of theUnited States, residing at the city-of St. Louis, State of Missouri, have inventeda certain new and useful Sus ensory Bandage and Dressing-Retainer, of W is a specification, reference being had to t e accom anying drawings, forming part of this speci cation'.
This invention relates to a certain new and useful improvement in suspensory bandages and dressm -retainersv pro er treatment of certain diseases ofthe ma e enito-'urinary organs that snch'parts Y shoul be vsupported and relieved'A of strain.
` diseases that "means be It is 'also desirable in the treatment of such rovided, both on acto prevent any poscount-of cleanliness an dlsehses, which are sible spreading of such ymore or less infectious, for receiving the discharges which usually accompany such diseases at certain stages thereof, and also so that local external remedies may be continuously a tain the ressing after operations on-the geni-v tal organs.- It is also highly desirable in the treatment Ofanto-infectious or auto-inocula- .4o also entire ble diseases, such as chancroid and other skinzdiseases of the genital organs, that the penis be held away from the scrotum, so as not to infect the-same.- 1 .y v
The objectof my invention istherefore'to provide an article ofthe kind described'which 1s light, strong, durable,'easily applied, and kept in propery osition, and which fulfilsall -requirements, t e dressing-'retainer or apron not only lying fiatwise upon and close to the suspensory banda e, butis easily partly removableu on eit er side in-urinating, and y removable When its v4use in the. treatment of the disease is no' longer necessary, the suslpensory bandage'for the scro-V 'tum or testic .in in use if required by itself.
es being capable of and remainith this ob] ect in view my invention consiste in the .novelconstruction, arrangement, and combination of the several parts, all as vwill hereinafter be described, and pointed out se` in the claims. Inthe accompanyin drawings, illustrat\ ling"thefnvention," in t e several fi ures of y which 'like parts are similarly designated, Figurel is a perspective view. Fig.- 2 is afront view of t e suspensory bandage proper,

the supporting waist-straps being cut avvay.- Fig. V3 1s a vfront viewv of the dressmg-retainer detached, and Fig. 4 is a vertical cross-sectional viewvthrough the suspensory bandage I with the dressing-retainerin position thereon.
In the drawings, A represents the main portion 'of the suspensorybandage .for .supporting the scrotumor testicles. This portionAls preferably made of open-Woven silk or other fabric cut substantlally triangular in laltares/(see Fi s. 1' and 2) and having its the top and in the center ofthe portion A is an o therethrough, the edges of said o ening being also rotected by a ta e b. gelow said opening and extending own the front of -said -'orti on A are short' sections of broad tape seWed coincidentallyone on each-side of said portion A and causing it`to assume the shapeof a shallow bag or pocket for holding the scrotum. l Onl this tape Care attached parts c of certain s'epa'rable fastening devices, preferably parts o glove-fasteners, for pur: poses hereinafter stated. f D is the supportin Waist-strap, preferably of elastic material, t eends of` which are se-l cured to the upper corners. of said ortion A, (see Fig. 2,) the reinforcing-pads of Inuslin or other strong material being-providedl over theportion A at these points for'` well-under- Waist-stra-p ID are tabs E, bearin buckles e for. receiving the supporting crotc -straps-F,
which are preferabl "-ofelastic material. The
pening B for the passage of the penist l edges protected. y a binding-tape a. N ear Asis Wel known, itis necessaryin the/ Vstood purposes. `Adjacent 'the said upper corners of theportion A and secured to the straps F are suitab y connected to the lower end of said ta e C andare adapted toextend around thethighs and be adjustably received by the buckles e. @It is'thus seen that the suspensory banda e is very easily applied in pos1tion, isy readi Iy adjustable to :fit the Wearer, and isiirm y kept in proper position' by saidfwaist and crotch stra s. Also adjacent the said up er corners o the portion A (see Fig. '2) an on the Waist-strap Dare short sections of. tape or other strong preferably non-elastic' material G, bea-ring parts ofcertain separable fastening devices-pre erably parts of glo've-fasteners-fr puroses l hereinafter stated.` 4The'tape-sections are los l suitabl securedto the waist-strap Dover said ta s E and also .to said reinforcing-pads d. It v vill thus be'readilg apparent that my suspensory bandage'can' e manufactured at slight cost, the Waist-strap D, tabs E, tapesections, reinforcingads and portion A being all seWed to et er at one time.
H -s the dressing-retainerI or 'removable apron adapted to fit over and flatwise upon the suspensorybandage, Aas shown in Figs. `l'
i .devicespreferably parts of glove-fasten- 'ers- Whicliare complemental to and readily `I vcoperate with the fastening devices g When -zo `the .apronis in use. 'In the center of saidapron and extending 4up a short distance from its bottom edge is a section of tape J,
bearing parts j of separable fastening devices-preferably parts'of glove-fasteners- 3 2 5 which are complemental to and readily co i erate'with thefasteningfdevice's c When tllie lapron is in use. Y
When it is requiredv in the treatment of certain diseases, as before stated, to provide 3o means for continuously applying local remev dies or for receiving discharges or for retainingthe dressing after operations on such parts, this removable a ron is easily secured 4to the suspensory ban age by means of the 3 5 fsaidfastening devices, and when in position the penis passin through the opening B in thesaidpor'tion of the suspensory bandage vill not only besup orted. andrelieved` of y strain by the apron but cotton or other 4.0 vmateriallfor said purposes Will be held in proper position bythev apron. In urinating either side of the apron may be readily unfastened, in Whichevent the cotton or otherv material loosely Wrappedl around the penis inthe more commQn-venereal diseases will off, thus 'doing away with any soiling .dro of the-hands and 'at the same time compelling t the user to provide fresh material.v
When the cure'of the disease or operation 5o has progressed sufficiently thatfthe use of the la ron 1s nol longer necessary,"but theuse of Y t e suspenso bandage for the scrotumor [testicles is stil require or desired, .the apron can bereadily removed or detached from the 5 5 suspensorybandage and dispensed with Without in .any Way affecting-the continued and vproper use of the said suspenso'ry bandage.
. It is'obvious that my suspensorybandage and 4dressing-retainer can fbe made'` 1n ydiffer- 6c ent sizes to .fit dierent individuals and l,also should the dressing-retainer or removable apron ,H become' soiled or Worn a new one may be readily substituted. i'
My 'suspensory bandage and dressing-re- 6 5` tainer is a s o particularly useful for general y use or entirely removed from the bandagefor yretainer in place upon thei bandage, whereby athletic use or in military service.- For instance, Where long horseback rides are necessary and there is danger of bruising' the genital organs by contact Withthe pommel of the saddle it is especially desirable to immobilize the testicles and penis-in separate compartments, and this is easily accomplished vby my article.
I thus rovide` an article of the kind described Wfiich answers all purposes, and being preferably made of light open-Woven material and firmly held-in positionthere is no rubbing or chaiing'of the skin of the user and the air can readily circulate therethrough, keeping the affected parts as cool as possible, which is particularly helpful in the cure of these diseases. `Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Pat- 1. As a new articleof manufacture, a suspensory bandage for the scrotum, and a dressing-retainer fitting ilatwise over said bandage, and complemental fasteningv devices upon said bandage and dressing-retainer fordetachably and removably securing said dressing-retainer in place upon the bandage, whereby said dressing-retainer may be partly detached upon either side when in 9 5 renewal and other purposes.
2. A suspensory bandage-for the scrotum -provided With an opening for ,the penis, fastening devices secured to said bandage, and Waist and crotch straps for holdin said band age -in position, comblned With a ressing-retainer tting flatvvise over the penis-opening of said bandage and constructed of a flat iece of material and rovided with fastening evices com lementa to and adapted to cooperate Wit the fastening devices.- on said bandage for detachably and removably se curing said dressin -retainer infplacc'upon the bandage, Where y said dressing-retainer may be partly detached upon either 'side when ,in-use, or entirel removed fromthe bandage for renewal an other purposes.
- 3. A suspensory bandage for the scrotum provided with an opening for the penis, fastening devices secured to said bandage, and Waist and crotch straps for holding the same in position, combined with a dressing-retainer fitting ilatwise over the enis-openin of said bandage andconstructe of a iiat,`tr1- angular piece of 4material and provided with nu fastening devicesat all of its corners complemental to and adapted to co erate with the fastenin devices on said ban age for detachably an removably securing said dressing- IOC ILO
said ldressing,- retainer may b e partly ,detached uponeither side when 1n use, or entirely removed from the bandage for renewal and otherpurposes.
4. A suspensory bandage for the scrotum :3c
strap secure having an o ening for the penis, a Waistto` the upper 'corners of said bandage, a section of material secured along the center of said bandage below said opening, whereby said bandage is formed into a bag, fastening devices on Vsaid section of material, buckles-on said waist-strap', crotchstraps ad'ustably secured to the lower end of said ban age and adjustably received by` said buckles, 4shortsections of non-elastic mate-- rial secured to said waist-strap adjacent the upper ends vof the suspensory bandage, fas-' tenlng devices on said sections of non-elastic material upon opposite sides of the suspen- 1s wise over the bandage, an
