To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, MARGARET HALL, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Vancouver, in the county of Clarke and State of Washington, have invented a new and Improved Marking Device for Skirts, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

This invention relates to marking devices; and it consists, substantially, in the details of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter more particularly described, and pointed out in the claims.

The invention has reference more especially to devices or structures for marking ladies garmentssuch as skirts, coats, cloaks, dresses, and the like-on a line atwhich to cut or hem the garment to derive a hang thereof at the bottom a uniform distance all around from the ground or floor.

One of the principal objects of the invention is to provide a marking device orstructure of the character referred to of an embodiment to overcome numerous disadvantages and objections encountered in the use of many other devices of the kind hitherto employed. a

A further object is to provide a device of this kind which is simple in construction and comparatively inexpensive to manufacture,

- besides being effective and reliable for its purposes, as well as collapsible to occupyjbut small space in shipment or transportation or when not in use and. possessing the capacity for long and repeated service. I

The above and additional objects are attained by means substantially such as are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a view in perspective'of my improved marking device or structure, illustrating the manner in which the same is employed in use. Fig. 2 is an enlarged part-sectional view illustrating more clearly the construction of the skirt-holder and chalk-holder, as well as the manner in which the latter is operated. Fig. 3 is an enlarged sectional side view in ,detail. Fig. 4 is an enlarged broken bottom plan view of the sectional collapsible platform and showing one embodiment of means employed for locking together the sections thereof in proper relation to each other for enabling the device or structure to be used or employed in the manner intended. Fig. 5 is a longitudinal sectional view on the line'5 5 of Fig. 6 of another embodiment of means em ployed for locking together the sections of the collapsible platform for operative purposes. Fig. 6 is a transverse sectional view of the construction shown in Fig. 5, and Fig. 7 is a side view illustrating my improved marking device or structure in collapsed form.

Before proceeding with a more detailed description it may be stated that in the form of my improvements herein shown I employ a specially-constructed platform on which the operative elements of my im roved device or structure .are mounted, sai platform comprising collapsible sections, on one of which the operator stands while marking her skirt,

A specially-constructed guide is employed for the operating-rod for the device or structure, said guide having thereon a scale or graduation, which, together with an index, constitutes a gage, said operating-rod being of special construction and provided on the lower end thereof witha specially-constructed holder for chalk for effecting the markings on the skirts, as will presently be explained. I also employja specially-cons rt structed holderfor the against a specially-constructed backing therefor on the platform while the operating-rod is being manipulated, it being only necessary for the person using the device or structure to employ a mirror in convenient position before her to enable it to be seen that the marking operations are properly carried out. I further employ special means for locking together the sections of the latform of the device or structure when the atter is in use, and while I have herein represented m improvements in a certain preferred embo iment it will be understood that I do not limitmyself thereto in precise detail, since immaterial changes therein may. be made coming within the scope of my invention.

Fitted upon the vertically-extending semitubular member 1.2 is a slide 15, provided with an index 16, having a set-screw 16, by which the slide and index may be secured at any desired elevation on the member 12, and also provided at the uJper and lower ends thereof with rings or collars 17, substantially of equal internal diameter with the hereinbe fore-mentioned rings or collars 1 1 and 13, the said rings or collars 17 having rigid therewith horizontally disposed inwardly extending arms 18, attached to the inner ends of which are transversely-extending plates 19, the inner faces of which are provided with any desired. number of buttons 20, preferably of elastic material. the-upper end thereof is the operatii'ig-rod 21 of my improved device or structure, the same being preferably jointed at 22, (see Fig. 7,) thus to enable the member 23 thereof to be turned againstthe sa'ine, thereby imparting to said operating-rod the capacity of collapsibility, so tliat'when the parts of the device or structure are carried to the position thereof indicated in Fig. 7 it will be seen that a comparatively limited space is consumed or tilkfl ll up thereby. The said operating-rod 21 is provided with a stud 24 for a purpose hereinafter stated.-

The member 23 of the operating-rod is provided with a sleeve 25, and whenever the device or structure is to be used the member 23 is straightened out relatively to the rod, whereupon the sleeve 25 is moved so as to retain the member 23in ri .id operative relation with said rod to be ta en hold of by the operator, as indicated in Fig. 1, the stud 24 serving as a stop to prevent the sleeve 25 from passing beyond the point.

The operating-rod 21 is provided lower end thereof with a shoe 26, to which is secured, bymeans of rivets 27 or in any other suitable Way, a holder for a piece of chalk 28, comprising two jaws 29 and 30, between which the piece of chalk is inserted, said jaws being provided with a set-screw 31 and nut 32 for adjustment thereof, it being mentioned at the i portion 34 of the said shoe 26 at the lower end of the operating-rod 21 rests upon the upper edge of the lowermost one of the rings or collars 17 of the slide 15, and when use is to be made of the device or structure the operator sim ly stands on the large or main section 2 of the platform 1 and places her skirt over the upright member 5, first having moved the tubular member 1.2 and o erat ing-rod 21 outwardly at an angle su stantially as indicated by the diagonally-extending broken line in Fig. 1 to enable her to conveniently adjust the skirt before the outer face of said upright member 5. The height at which the skirt is to be marked from the" bottom having first been determined and the slide 15 adjusted on the semitubular member 1.2 in accordance therewith, it will now be seen that by swinging the member 12 and operating-rod 21 inwardly to cause the buttons 20 of the plates 19 to press upon the portion of the skirt before the member 5, to thereby hold the skirt in place, the proper n'ii-irking of the skirt may be effected by simply rotating the operating-rod first in one direction and then the other, in which way the said. chalk-holder will be carried back and forth before the portion of the skirt referred to, the edge of the piece of chalk 28 being carried. against the skirt in an obvious manner. By'the operator repeating this operation and gradually turning herself about on the platform it is apparent that the marking of the skirt may be effected all around the same.

From the foregoing description it is thought that the construction and operation of the arts of my improved device or structure will be fullynnderstood without further detailed explanation, and it 'will be seen that when the device or structure is not in use the same may be collapsed or folded together in-the manner already explained, so as to, occupy but small space when stowed away. 1

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1, A device for marking skirts',comprising a platform, a rigid upright member thereon, a pivoted upright member also thereon, provided with a scale, a. slide adjustable on the ing portions of the same against the rigid upright member on swinging "the pivoted upright member in the direction thereof, a rod rotatable in the pivoted member, and a chalk-holder carried b T said rod.

A device for mar 'ng skirts, comprising a platform constructed of two sectic ns. hinged together, arigid upri ht member on one of the sections, a'pivoted upright member also thereon, provided with scale, a slide adjustable on "the latter member, provided with means for holding portions of the skirt against the rigid upright member on swingingthe pivoted upright member in the direction thereof, a rod rotatable in the pivoted memher, and a chalk-holder carried by said rod.

3. A device for marking skirts, comprising a platform, a uprightmember thereon, a pivoted upright member also thereon, provided with a scale, an adjustable slide on the latter member, provided with an index-reading on said scale, said slide carrying means for holding portions of the skirt against the upright member, on swinging the pivright member, and a chalk-holder carried by said rod.

4. A device for marking skirts, comprising a platform, constructed of two sections hinged together, means for securing the sections in rigid operative relation to each other, a rigid upright member on one of the sections, a pivoted upright member also thereon, provided with a scale,- a slide ad-' against the rigid-upright member, on swinging the pivoted upright member in the direction thereof, a rotatable rod carried by the pivoted upright member, and a chalk-holder carried by said rod.

5. A device for marking skirts,-comprising' a platform, constructed of two sections hinged together, means for securing the sections in rigid operative relation to each other, a rigid upright member on one of the sections, a pivoted upright member also thereon, rovided with a scale, a slide adjustable on t e latter member, provided with means for holding portions of the skirt against the rigid upright member, on swinging the pivoted upright member in the direction thereof, a rotatable rod carried b the pivoted upright member, and a chalkolder carried by said rod, said first-named means embodying a catch on one of said sections of the platform, and a pivoted tongue on the other.
