To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARTHUR F. Rown, citizen of the United States, residing at Springfield, in the county of Hampden and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful. Improvements in Tailors Appliances, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in devices employed by dressmakers and tailors for determining the correct and uni-v form hang of skirts and like garments, and has for one of its objects an improvement of construction to increase the efliciency and utility of devices of this char acter.
Another object of this invention is to provide a simple device of this character over which the skirt is moved as the person upon whom the skirt or like garment is being fitted turns around and is adjustable vertically to any required extent, and the gage or hang of the skirt or other like garment thus effectually and conveniently determined, and without fatigue either to the drcssmaker or to the person upon whom the garment is being fitted.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which may be collapsed into a small space for transportation or storage.
\Vith these and other objects in view the invention consists in certain novel features of construction hereinafter described and then specifically pointed out in the claim; and, in the drawings illustrative of the preferred embodiment of the invention, Figure 1 is a side elevation with the improved device in open or operative position. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same with the supporting members shown in dotted lines. Fig. 3
is a side elevation of the device in collapsed or folded position. Fig. 4 15 an enlarged detail view illustrating the construction of the adjusting mechanism.
The improved device comprises in general a supporting frame which is adjustable vertically and collapsible when not in use, a platform carried by the supporting frame and movable vertically therewith, coupling means applied to the frame, and locking means operating upon the coupling means tolock the frame in any adjusted position.
The supporting frame comprises two leg members 1011 pivotally united intermediate their ends, as shown at 12. The legs 1011 are provided with offsets at the points where the pivot 12 is applied, so that when collapsed as shown in Fig. 3, the major portions of the leg members will lie in parallel relations, but not overlapping. Connected to the leg 10 at one end is a transverse member 13, while a similar transverse member 14 is connected to the leg 10 atits opposite end. Connected to the leg 11 at one end is a transverse member 15, while a similar transverse member 16 is connected to the leg 11 at its opposite end. For the purpose of this description the transverse members 13-15 are referred to as being located at the upper and outer ends of the leg members, while the transverse members 1416 are referred to as being located at the lower ends of the leg members. The transverse members 1ll6 are designed to bear upon the floor, and thus form feet to support the frame, while the transverse members 1315 are'designed to support the platform, represented as a whole at 17. The platform 17 is preferably formed with one side concave, as shown at 1.8, and the other side convex, as shown at 19, or resembling a portion of an annular body, and will be constructed of any suitable light material such as light wood, heavy cardboard, or the like. Connected to the underside of the platform 17 at one end are two guide members 2021, preferably of wire with eyes at the ends to receive the holding screws or like devices 222? The guide devices 2021 extend through apertures in the end member 13 of the leg 10, while the end member 15 is hingedly connected to the platform at its opposite end, as shown at 2t25. By this arrangement the legs 1011, together with the platform 17, may be disposed in close parallel relations or collapsed as shown in Fig. 3, or the platform extended vertically as shown in Fig. 1, the extent of the elevation being gaged by the length of the guide members 20, and it will be obvious that the platform may be elevated to any desired extent within the range of the guide mem bers. The relatively long foot members 11 16 insure the requisite steadiness and stability to the device, while the relatively long members 13-15 support the platform with equal rigidity.
At one end the member 14: is directed inwardly, as shown at 26, while the member 16 is likewise directed inwardly at one end, as shown at 27. Pivoted at 28 t0 the inwardly directed end 26 of the member 14; is a bar 29 having its inner end outturned, as shown at 30, and perforated to receive a rod 31, the rod being pivoted at 32 to the inturned end 27 of the member 16. Connected to the member 29 intermediate its ends is a guide lug 32, through which the rod 31 slidably operates, the two portions 30 -32 thus coacting to support the rod and couple it slidably to the member 29. The rod 31 is threaded for a portion of its length, and the threaded portion cut away at one side to provide a flat face 33, and formed upon the flat face are graduations 34: denoting inches and parts of inches, or other suitable marks. A sleeve 35 engages the threaded portion of the rod 31, the sleeve being preferably cylindrical with a milled outer face to facilitate its operation. A locking device is applied to the member 29 and its lug 32 to prevent the movement of the sleeve and the rod bodily away from the lug 32, after the platform has been adjusted to the required position, and this locking means comprises a plate, represented as a whole at 36, extended at one end into a lever arm 37 and directed at right angles to the body of the plate, as shown at 38, for bearing against the lug 32 and with an extension 39 for bearing beneath the lower edge of the lug and with an upturned terminal, the parts 37-38-39 operating to lock the plate 36 to the lug. A depending resilient tongue 40 is formed in the plate 36 for passing over the sleeve and engaging against the outer face. By this arrangement when the device is to be used, the lever arm 37 is elevated to disengage the tongue 40 and release the nut 35 which is then, rotated until it arrives at the graduation 34 which corresponds to the required position of the platform. The platform is then elevated bodily which movement causes the member 36 to pass over the sleeve until the stop 32 engages the sleeve at one side and the tongue 4L0 passes over the nut and engages it at the other side, thus not only locating the platform at the required elevation, but also looking it in position. The person upon whom the skirt is to be fitted then takes position with the bottom of the skirt next the hollow portion 18 of the platform, and the latter utilized as a gage to mark the skirt in any suitable manner. The person upon whom the skirt is being fitted turns about to bring all parts of the skirt in position relative to the platform or in position to be marked. The skirt may thus be accurately and quickly gaged and marked and without fatigue either to the operator or the customer. The platform 17 may thus be adjusted to any desired extent vertically within the range of the guides 20, and locked in any point of elevation, and
also locked in its fully collapsed position, as
will be obvious.
The lmproved implement 1s slmple in constructlon, can be inexpensively. manufactured and readily applied by any person without previous skill or knowledge.
All of the parts of the device are constructed of metal except the platform 17, and will be as light as possible consistent with the strains to which they will be subjected.
Having thus described my invention, what is claimed as new is- In a device of the class described, a supporting frame including pivotally connected crossed legs, a platform, means for hingedly connecting one of said legs at one end thereof to said platform, means for slidably connecting the other of said legs at one end thereof to said platform, a bar swinging at one end from one of said legs, said bar having a guide lug at its free end and another guide lug intermediate its ends, a threaded rod swinging at one end from the other of said legs and slidable through said guide lugs, a threaded sleeve engaging the threaded portion of said rod and bearing against said intermediate lug at one side, and a resilient member having a downwardly directed portion bearing against 'said intermediate lug at the other side, said Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents,
