INVALIDS FOLDING TABLE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 24, 1906.
Application filed January 30,1906. Serial No. 298,6 '76.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN SCHEIBNER, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Beaver Falls, in the county of Beaver and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Invalids Folding Tables, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in tables; and the invention has for its primary object to provide a novel form of table particularly adapted for invalids use and which can be folded into a compact form whereby it can be stored away when not being used.
Another object of thisinvention is to pro vide a folding table that can be adjusted to various elevations, whereby it can be used in connection with various kinds of beds.
A further object of this invention is to provide a folding table which will be extremely simple in construction, strong and durable, comparatively inexpensive to manufacture,
v and extremely easy to handle.
With the above and other objects in view, which will more readily appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described and claimed, and, referring to the drawing accompanying this application, I have illustrated a perspective view of my improved table, the table in a folded form being shown in dotted lines.
The table as constructed by me comprises two standards 1 1, to the lower ends of which is hinged, as at 2 2, a substantially U-shaped frame 3, forming the base of the table. Connected to the side rails 4 4 of the frame 3 are pivoted slotted arms 5 5, which engage the protruding screw-threaded ends of a transverse rod or bolt mounted in the standards 1 1, the ends of said rod or bolt being provided with winged nuts 7 7, whereby the frame 3 can be swung into a vertical position and retained there by the winged nuts 7 7, as illustrated in dotted lines.
The standards at their upper front ends are provided with confronting slots 8 8, and engaging in said slotsare hook-shaped members 9 9, carried by the rear edge of the table board or plate 10, said board or plate having a curved edge 11, whereby when the table is being used it may be moved into close proximityto an invalid and partially conform to i the front side of the standards 1 1, a plurality of notches being used whereby the table board or plate 10 may be adjusted relative to the frame 3. 1
The standards 1 1 are braced by transverse bars 15 15, connected to their rear sides, while the upper ends of the standards are provided with hooks 16 16, whereby the table board or platecan be removed from the front side of the standards and suspended from the hooks 16 16, as shown in dotted lines in the drawing. In this position the hook-shaped members 9 9 of the table board or plate are adapted to engage the hooks 16 16, while the board or plate lies in engagement with the rear side of the standards.
In practice the frame 3 is adapted to extend under a bed, while the table board or plate 10' extends over the bed to support various articles to be used by an invalid. The table can readily be used as a readingtable for supporting literature or may be used for supporting dishes when a meal is being served to the invalid.
The table in its entirety is extremely simple and can be readily adjusted to any desired elevation and when not in use can be easily and quickly folded, whereby it will occupy a comparatively small space within a sick-chamber or storage-compartment.
The table may be made of light and durable metal or wood, and such changes in the construction of the table as are permissible by the appended claims may be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A folding table embodying a pair of standards connected together and provided at their inner faces at the upper ends thereof with slots, a rod passed through said standards and having threaded ends extending beyond the standards, a frame hinged to the standards at theirlower ends, slotted arms connected at the r lower ends to said frames and engaging the threaded ends of said rod, nuts on said threaded ends of the rod for securing the slotted arms thereon, a table-top IOC carrying hooks at its inner end engaging in the slots in said standards and supporting brackets carried by the table-top, and engaging in notches provided therefor in the front faces ofthe standards.
2. A folding table comprising a pair of standards, a frame hinged to said standards at their lower ends and forming a table-rest, a, rod passed through the standards with its ends extending beyond said standards, slotted side arms fastened at their lower ends to of said rod, means on the ends of said rods for fastening the arms, a table-top carrying hooks in its rear end detachably connecte to the standards and supporting-brackets I5 JOHN SCHEIBNER.
