Patented July 24, 1906.

lowing to be a full, clear, and exact descri tion of the invention, such as will enable ot ers skilled in the art to which 1t appertams to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in lhatchway doors and gutters.
The object of the invention is to providea coveringfor hatchways or other openings 1n the sidewalk or street and means whereby the water passing through the joints between said cover and its surrounding frames or thev edge of the opening will be caught and prevented from running into the vault or cellar below said cover.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination, and arran ement of parts, as Will be hereinafter described and claimed.
In theaccompanying drawings, Fi re 1 is a plan viewof a pair of hatchway-dfvdlors to illustrate the application of' the invention thereto. lFig. 2 1s a vertical cross-.sectional view through the doors and gutters arranged beneath the same. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view taken at right angles to Fig. 2-
and between the meeting edges of the doors.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 and 2 denote the double doors of a hatchway 3, said hatchway being provided around lts upper edge with an angle-ironsupporting frame 4, to which is hingedly connected the outer side edges of the doors 1 and 2, as shown. The su porting-.frame 4 is arranged and held in p ace by means of a oement or other plastic foundation 5. Secured to the under side of the doors 1 and 2 adjacent to their meeting edges are angle-iron brace-bars 6 and 7. On the angle-iron bracebar 6, adjacent to the u per side of the same, is formed a laterally-projecting longitudinall disposed gutter 8, which extends beneatht e joint between the meeting edges of said bars, as shown.
Around thel outer edges of the doors 1 and 2 is arranged an an le-iron-protecting frame 9, said frame being i eid in position by means of anchors 10, embedded in the cement foundation 5, as shown. In the cement foundationv l5 .adjacent to the outer side of the supporting-frame 4 and, immediately beneath the jolnt between the edges of the door and' protecting-frame 9, is formed a continuous gutter 12. The gutter 8 on the door 1 is arranged to discharge the water caught thereby into the gutter' 12 at either end of the doors. The gutter 12 is provided at a suitable point with a drain-pipe 13, which, if desired, may extend to the street-gutter, as shown, or to any other suitable lace of discharge, thus draining the water om the cement gutter 12, as will be understood.
By providing gutters arranged as herein shown and described all surface water passing through. the 'oints of the doors coverin the hatchway Wi l be caught and conductedg to a suitable -place of discharge, thus. preventing the passage of said water into the cellar or vault covered by said doors.
While I haveherein shown and described the invention as beingapplied to a pair of double doors covering a hatchway, it 1s obvious that the same arrangement and construction of gutters may be applied to any form of cover-such, forinstance, as are used in conekction with vault-lights, manholes, and the e. y From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanyin drawings, the construction and operation o the linvention Will be readily understood Without requiring a more extended ex lanation.
Various changes in the orm, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacricing any of the advantages of this invention, as described by. the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination with a cover for hatch- Ways or other openings, of a protecting-frame surrounding said cover, 'a door-supporting frame, a plastlc foundatlon to receive said led thereto, a rotecting-frame surrounding said door, a p astic foundation to support .said frames, anchors to secure said protectingframe in place and a gutter formedvin said los plastic foundation beneath the joints of said door and protectingeframe, substantially as described. l
3. The combination with a supportin frame, of double hatchWay-doors hingedy connected thereto, a protecting-frame surrounding said doors, a concrete foundation to support said frames, anchors to secure said protecting-frame in place, a gutter formed in said concrete foundation beneath the oint of said doors and protecting-frame,angle-iron i braces secured to the under sides of said doors adjacent to their meeting edges, a gutter formed integral with o ne ofthe said braces 4and disposed beneath the meeting edges of the doors, said gutter being adapted to drain into the concrete gutter and a drain-pipe connected to said concrete gutter, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
ARTHUR PRIDDLE. Witnesses:
FRANCIS M. BIGGAM, GEORGE A. BENCH.
