CLAMP FOR TYPE-WRITERS.
Patented July 24, 1906.
A li ti fil d March 13, 1905. Serial No. 249,703.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANTHONY J. THRoM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State of New ork, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Olamps for Type-Writers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to the clamps employed for securing a type-writer to a baseboard, shelf, or other support.
The devices in common use consist ofbolts and similar fastenings which must be tightened from the under side of the desk, slide, or other support on which the machine is mounted, rendering it inconvenient in many cases to fasten the clamps to the support. Such clamps also require the use of a wrench or special tool, and theholes for the bolts must be bored to suit the different styles of machines.
It is the object of my invention to simple fastening means for this which can be conveniently applied and tightened from the upper side of the desk or other support without the use of tools and which can be adjusted to clamp machines of various styles and sizes.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a type-writer fastened to its support by the improved clamps, the support being shown in section. Fig. 2 is a sectional top plan view of the parts. Fig. 3 is a agmentary transverse section in line 3 3,
provide purpose Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views.
indicates a shelf, base-board, or other support on which the type-writer rests. This support is rovided under opposite frame members of the type-writer, referably its side bars B, with transverse s ots 0, having enlar ements c at one end. In the construction shown the enlargements are at the inner ends of the slots.
D D indicate the improved clamps, each consisting of an upper rod or bolt (Z, adapted side bar B or other ame member of the typewriter, a lower rod or bolt d, passing through the companion slot 0 and provided at its lower end with a ead or washer 0Z which bears against the under side of the support A, and a turnbuckle connecting said rods. The heads (1 are small enough to pass through the enlargements 0 of the slots 0, but wider than the latter, asshown. In the preferred construction shown in the drawings the upper rod 03 is the screw-threaded member engaging the turnbuckle, and the same is provided with a hook d which embraces the base-frame of the type-writer, this hook having a covering f, of rubber or similar soft material, to prevent its marring the machine.
In fastening the machine to its support the lower rods (1 of the clamps are passed with their heads d through the enlargements of the slots 0 from the upper side of the support and shifted into the narrow body portions of the slots. The type-Writer is then placed upon the support, between the clam s, the hooks d are enga ed over the framears B, and the turnbuck .es E are finally tightened, firmly securing the machine to The slots permit the clamps to be adjusted crosswise of the support to accommodate typewriters of different widths. can. be formed in the shelf or other support in the clamps, thus avoiding the trouble and delay of subsequently boring bolt-holes in the shelf to receive the fastenings, as heretofore. As the clamps are engaged with the shelf from its upper side, they can be conveniently applied, and as their ti htening members are located above the she f they are also convenient of access. Moreover, no wrench or other tool of any kind is required to apply and tighten the clamps.
y arranging the enlargements c at the inner ends of the slots 0, as shown, they are located on the inner side of the frame of the type-writer, and as the clamps are on the clamps from shifting inwardly allow their heads or washers d to come into register with said enlargements and become disengaged from the base-board A in case the clamps should become loose. rangement of the enlargements view, rendering tion more sightly than if the enlargements were at the outer ends of the slots.
I claim as my invention- The combination of a type-writingmachine, a base-board or sup ort for the machine provided with a pair of transverse slots having far enough to enlargements arranged on the inner sides of slot but wider than the body thereof, sub- I0 the side bars of the machine-frame, and a stantially as set forth. pair of clamps arranged on the outer sides of Witness my hand this 7th day of March, said side blars 811% palssing through said1 Sifts, 1905.
