To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, WILLIAM C. TRUEX, a citizen of the United States, and aresident of Allentown, in the county of Lehigh and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved Cap-Fitting, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

The urpose of the invention is to provide a novel and effective vase or cap fitting for brass or iron bedsteads, newel-posts, and other devices where the above cap or vase may be used, which device is simple and economic in construction, capable of expeditious 'and convenient application, and when applied is entirely concealed from view.

Another purpose of the invention is to pro vide a device of the character mentioned which will remain in position under all condi tions of usage, but which can be forcibly re moved when required.

The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of the several parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and pointed out in the claims.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding arts in all the figures.

Figure 1 is a sectiona side elevation of the device and a portion through the post to which it is applied. Fig. 2 is an enlarged bottom plan view of the socket-section of the device, and Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the said socket-section.

A re resents a tubular metal post-as, for examp e, a post of a metal bedstead-which .post is provided with a filling 10, of wood or other suitable material, and in said filling a circular longitudinal chamber 1 1 is produced, extending from the upper end. of the filling and extending through the center of the same to a predetermined distance.

B represents an ornamental collar, which is adapted to surround the post A and which is adapted not onlyto ornament the post, but to conceal the attaching device to be hereinafter described, which ornamental collar B extends over the upper end of the post and is provided at such portion with a central openmg 12.

The device proper consists of a receivingsection C and an entering section D. The receiving-section, as is shown in Figs. 1 and 3, consists of a tubular body 13, of spring metal, of suitable diameter to snugly fit m the chamber 11 of the post, and the said body 13 is pro-' vided with a slot 14, extending through from to to bottom. The lower ends of the said tu ular body 13 are provided with an opening 16 at one side, being an enlargement of the cut or longitudinal opening 14, as is shown in Fig. 3, and the lower end portions of the said tubular body thus obtained are bent inward or in direction of each other, being given a downward and inward bevel to produce opposing spring-jaws 15, whereby the lower end of the said tubular body 13 is contracted to a greater or lesser extent. The tubular body 13 of the receiving-section C is provided at its upper end with an outwardly-turned flange 13 and said tubular body 13 of the said receiving-section C is passed through a central 0 ening in a cup-washer c, the flange 13 of t e body 13 bearing upon the upper or outer face of said cup-washer, as shown in both Figs. 1 and 3. This cup-washer c is preferably provided with four cuts or slots 17 in its flange portion, as is shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the cuts being preferably at equal distances apart, so as to render the said washer as elastic as possible, since the Washer is made of a light spring metal, and also preferably to the same end the outer face of the upper portion of the washer is concaved and the inner face convexed. The washer c is of such diameter that when it is in use its flange portion will rest upon the up Ber edge of the post A. The entering section of the said device consists of a shank 18, referably circular incrosssection, which sl iank is adapted to enter the body portion of the receiving-section C and is of slightly less length than the length of the body 13 of the said receiving-section O. The body 19 is of much less diameter than the diameter of the body 13 of the receiving-section C and is provided at its lower end with an enlargement 20 preferably a spherical enlargement, as shown in Fig. 1, and at the upper end of the said body a collar 21 is formed of sufficient diameter to just enter and snugly fit into the upper end of the body portion 13 of the receiving-section C. In fact, when the collar 21 enters the tubular body 13 of the receiving-section it tends to expand the same, and at such time the enlargement 20 at the lower end of the body will have been forced through the inner contracted end of the tubular body of the receiving-section, and the jaws 1.5 of such body will engage with the upper surface of said enlargement 20, preventing the body 19 from leaving the receivingsection 0 until forcibly removed.

A knob or cap 22 is secured to the upper end of the body 19 just above the collar 21,

and the upper portion of the ornamental collar B extends over the slotted flange portion of the washer c, resting upon the upperface of the washer and completely concealing it and the upper end of the post, and when the entering section has been locked in the receiving-section of the device the under face of the knob or cap 22 will be in firm engagement with the upper face of the ornamental collar B, thus effecting a perfect finish.

The washer c affords a spring-cushion for the entering section D and likewise a springcushion for the receiving-section C, preventing the sections from possibly becoming loosened by severe jarring, and the washer likewise assists in removing the receivingsection from the post after the said section has been forcibly started outward.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. In cap-fittings or similar fastening devices, a tubular receiving-section of spring material having its lower ends formed into inwardly-tapering jaws, and an entering section comprising a body adapted to carry an ornament and provided with a collar at its outer end and an enlargement at its inner end, which collar is adapted to fit into the outer end of the receiving-section and the said enlargement to be forced past the lower edges of the jaws of the receiving-section.

2. In cap-fittings and similar fastening devices, a receiving-section comprising a tubular body lon itudinally slit from end to end and provided at its inner end with opposing inwardly-tapering spring-jaws, a springwasher supporting the upper end of the said tubular body, and an entering section comprising a body of less length than the body of the receivin -section, the body of the enterwith an ornament, a collar below the said ornament, and a spherical enlargement at its inner end, the said collar and said enlargement bearing such relation to each other that when the body has been passed into the rei ceiving-section the collar will be in expanding relation to the upper end of the body of the receiving-section and the spherical enlargement of the entering section Will have section.

The combination with a tubular post, a filling therefor having a longitudinal chamber formed therein, and a cover-sleeve for the said post extending over the top of the same, of a fitting consisting of a receiving-section comprising a tubular expansible body fitted to the said chamber and provided at its lower end with inwardly-tapering spring-jaws, and a cup-washer connected with the upper portion of the said tubular body, the flange of which washer is slotted and rests upon the said post, and an entering section comprising a body-section adapted to enter the tubular body of the receiving-section, the said body of the entering section having an ornament at its outer end, a collar below said ornament adapted for eXpansible engagement with the upper portion of the sleeve of the receivingsection, and a spherical enlargement which is at the inner end of the said body, which is adapted when the said collar is in theposition described to have passed the said jaws of the receiving-section,the jaws having bearing upon the upper portion of the enlargement, as set forth.
