Application filed February 13, 1931. Serial No. 515,579.
This invention relates to caps or balls for the tops of posts, such as bed posts, fences and other posts or poles.
The object of the invention is to provide an improved cap made of sheet metal, drawn, spun or pressed into shape, and provided with an extension or tube which will fit within the top; of a post or the like, and -be retained therein against the possibility of accidental removal. is provided which engages when the cap is applied and cannot be disengaged except by special action.
rllhe device can be cheaply made in one or more pieces, and will be superior to the ordinary cast metal caps used for such purposes.
With these objects in view, several forms are herein shown and described.

Referring to the drawings:
The post is indicated at with ports 11. The ball or cap VY12 is made of sheet metal, drawn, pressed and rolled into shape. The inner locking base 13 is made of tubing with the upper edge 14- rolled or beaded outward, the lower edge 15 of the ball 12 then being rolled over the outer surface of the rolled edge 14 of the locking base 13.l Said base has a plurality of cut out petal shaped tongues 16 in the walls which are bent outward. As the base 13 of the ball 12 is pushed down within the cylindrical post 10, the tongues 16 are pressed closed until the ports 11 are reached when the tongues spring outward and thus prevent the base 13 from being withdrawn from the post 10.
The invention may be produced in various other forms, by drawing and pressing sheet An automatic latch or lock metal, in one or more pieces and provides a cheap and easy way for producing caps or tops for posts, poles and other structures. To remove the caps the tongues may be pushed in until released. Y

The combination with a hollow post or the like, having holes extending through its wall near the end thereof, of a hollow tubular part fitting closely within the end of the post and having spring tongues engaging in said holes and also having an outwardly projecting curled bead at its end, anda drawn sheet metal cap having a circular bead at its lower end bent around and enclosing the bead on the tubular part and resting against the end of the post.
