PATENT OFFICE.
CHABLIS P. ABBOTT, F ALLSTON, MASSAHUSETTS. I I
SANITARYl HANDLE, KNOB, `ANI) THE Lm Application mea August 4, 1922. smal 1ro. 579,859.'
To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, CHARLES P. Aorrr. a
, citizen of the United States, and resident' of Allston. Boston. county of Suffolk, Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Sanitary Handles, Knobs, and the like, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like characters on the drawings representing like parts in each of the several views.
This invention relates to knobs and handles equipped with provision for keeping the` same at all times in a sterile and sanitary condition. lVhile having other and more `general fields of usefulness the invention is well adaptedand designed for embodiment in knobs of doors and in pull handles, such as used with closet cisterns and the like. The invention comprises a knob, handle or the like equipped with provision for receiving and holding a quantity of substance preferably in crystals or more or less comminuted form` or other substance capableY of giving oii' gradually and continuously for a long period an manation, vapor, or mist ca.- pable of disinfecting and sterilizing the handle and its locality. such substance also preferably being distinguished by a pleasing odor capable of overcoming any unpleasant odor in the vicinity. The foregoing and other objects and advantages of the invention will more fully appear from the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings. and the distinctive 'features of novelty will be pointed out in the appended claims.
Referring to the drawings:
Fig. 1 is an elevation of a pull handle embodying the invent-ion, a portion thereof being broken away in section;
Fig. 2 is an end view thereof;
Fig. 3 is a transverse section on line 33 'l of Fig. 1;
Fig. 4 is an elevation of a door knob embodying the invention;
Fig. 5 isan elevation showing an outer portion of the knob of Fig. 4 viewed from the inner side thereof;
Fig. 6 is a longitudinal sectional view of the knob portion shown in Fig. 5; Fig. 7 1s an elevation from the inner side of the inner knob portion of the knob of Fig. 4;
Fig. 8 is a longitudinal section thereof;
Fi 9 is a transverse section on line 9-,-10 of lgure 4 showing a locking device in locking position; I
Fig. 10Y .is a similar section showing the locking device disengaged; and
Fig. 11 is an elevation showing-a ortion of a knob receiving shank adapted with the invention.
Referring first to Figures 1, 2 and 3, 10
indicates a pull handle which may be of a shape generally similar to that employed in pull handles for closet cisterns, being shown as having a ring 11 `at its inner end to be engaged by a pull chain 12. In accordance with my invention, this pull handle is made as a hollow shell either of metal or other suitable material. Adjacent its outer end, this shell is formed or provided with an in. wardly extending flan e 13 and with a threaded collar or nipp e 14 extending outward from the inner edge of such flange. The outer extremity of the handle is formed as a separate cap 15 of cup shape with a band 16 around its periphery rebated internally to provide a seat engaging the outer edge of the shell 10. Thiscap 15 is also provided withan inwardly extending collar 17 threaded 'to engage the threads of the collar 14. The cap 15'may be formed as a one piece cup,'but as herein shown, l` form it with a central opening 18 which has extending thereacross a foraminous sheet or mesh 19. rFhe entire extent of the handle and body 10 and also of the cap 15 are perforated with a multiplicity of minute holes 20 there, through. ln the use of the invention, the cap 15 being removed, the handle is partly or wholly filled with a substancel D either in the form of crystals, or more or less comminuted, or otherwise, adapted to give 0E slowly and gradually' but continuously during a lon period, an emanation or 'vapor' that, passing outward through the minute holes 20 keeps the handle in a thoroughly` sterile and sanitary condition, this substance being also p-referably'of a character to disseminate a. pleasin odor in the locality. ln Figures 4 et seq, show an application of the invention tov knobs for doors and the like. ln this case the knob is madel hollow and in two parts 21, 22 with both parts preferably perforated with minute holes therethrough throughout the area thereof. The outer knob portion 22 is formed with a peripheral rib rebated as'indicated at 23 to t or use i its ne l
' over the outer ed of .the inner mob porpast the center,
tion 21. Each of these'ob portions has a web extending across the lower portion or the inner side thereof and upward somewhat such web in the outer knob portion being indicated at 24 and that of the inner knob portion at 25, these webs thus lying side by side when the knob is assembled. The outer knob portion has a squared socket sleeve 26 extending inwardly'therefrom adapted to receive a squared knob shank 27, while the inner heb portion 21. has a shorter sleeve 28 extending inwardly therefrom with a squared socket receiving the sleeve 26, this sleeve 28 'being circular exteriorly. For holding the knob portions 2l, 22 in assembled relation on the knob shank 27, a spring clasp 29'is provided to fit around the sleeve 28, this clasp bearing adjacent one end thereof a key 30 which is adapted to extend through a slot 31 provided therefor in the sleeve 28, and a registering slot 32 in the sleeve 26 so that this key may engage one of a series of notches 33' in the ob shank. rlhese notches 33 are preferably rectangular so that the key 30 engaged therein 1s insured against casual dislodg' ment. The slot 3l in the sleeve 28 preferably has one side thereof rebated as indicated at 31a so as'to permit the key 30 to ride outward thereon as the clasp 29 is turned, and the clasp 29 may have its extremity slightly turned outward as indicated at 29, so as to constitute a finger hold. ln use, one or both of the portions 21, 22 is partly lled with the disinfectant sterilizing substance D, and the webs 24, constitute retaining walls to hold the substance in place in the two knob portions as they are assembled. lhen the knob portions being brought tether may instantly and easily secured aesinet to the knob sh by means of the key as described. 'l am aware that the invention maybe embodied in other specific forms without departing from the spirit or essential attributes thereof, and I therefore desire the present embodiment to be considered in all respects as illustrative and not restrictive, reference -being had to the appended claims rather than to the foregoing description to indicate thescope of the invention.
Having described my invention, what l claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: y
l. A sanitary knob or handle for doors or the like composed of two shell portions adapted to be assembled side by side, each thereof having a. sleeve extending inwardly therefrom with the sleeve from theouter portion adapted to fit within the sleeve of the inner portion and to receive a knob shank, each of said portions having a multi plicity of relatively small holes therethrough, and means for locking vsaid portions in assembled relation upon a knob shank.
2. A sanitary knob for doors or the like composed of two shell portions adapted to be assembled side by side, each thereof having a sleeve extending inwardly therefrom, with the sleeve from the outer portion adapted to lit within the sleeve of the inner portion and to receive a knob shank, each of said shell portions having a web extending across the lower portion of the inner side thereof and upward past the center, cachot said portions having a multiplicity of relatively small holes therethrough, and means for xing said portionsf in assembled relation upon na knob shank. p
ln testimony whereof, l have signed my name to this specilication'.
' '1 i LES P. ABBOTT.
