F U R N IT U R E No 825,854. Specification of Letters Patent.
' Application filed September 13,1905. Serial No. 278.288.
To all whonvit may concern:
Be it known that I, CAROLINE E. MEAD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Louisville, in the county of Jefferson and State of Kentucky, have invented new and useful Improvements in Furniture, of which the followmgl is a specification.
he invention relates to an improvement in furniture, and more particularly to a tableframe having a to secured thereto and providedfwith a leaf 'nged to the top, the con-' struction including means whereby the leaf may be supported in alinementwith the top or at an angle thereto.
The preferred details of construction will be describedin the following specification, had to the accompanying drawings, in w 'ch- Fi ing t e article of furniture constructed in accordance with m invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of t e same. 3 1s a vertical central section of' the same.
Referring particularl to the drawin s, wherein like parts are lndicated by simifar reference-numerals, the im roved article of furniture, hereinafter broa y termed a table, comprises a framework includin side practically of the heig t desired for the table and cut out at the lower end to provide supporting-legs 3. The space included within the strips 1s divided into two equal chambers 4 and 5 by a central transverse partition 6. The side and end strips are joined by a bot tom 7 in which, on each side of the partition 6, is formed a series of transversely-arranged openings 8, preferably covered by suitable screening material 9, whereby to afford ventilation to the chambers 4 and 5. Near the upper end of each chamber the side strips 1 are provided with longitudinal guides 10, desi ned to slidably support leavesor slides 11. T ese slides are practically coextensive with the dimensions of the chamber and project slightly beyond the end strips of the frame to provide for convenient operation. The side stri s of the chamber 5 are further provided wit a longitudinal guide I 12 beneath each of the guides 10, forming a sup ort for a partitioned drawer 13, the rear on s of the guides 12 being turned u ward to provide stops 14, thereby limiting t e inward movement of the drawer to position its face-plate in alinement w1th the end stri of the frame, drawer-pulls 15 being provide for operation of the drawer.
e 1 is a view in end elevation, show-' Thechamber 4 is divided by horizontal partitions 16, dividing said chamber into two compartments. Doors 17 and 18 are arranged to close openings in the end strips 2 adjacent the compartments 4 and 5, respec' tively, the door 17 extending from ractically the bottom 7 to the slide 11, whi e the door 18 extends fromsaid bottom to thei'fixed g and supporting the.
strip 19, underl drawer 13. Knob s 20, prefers. y 0
suitable locking means, are carrie by the doors. v I
The framework is covered by the table top, comprisin a fixed section 21 of a size to extend beyon the framework in all direcame tions and hinged sections or leaves 22, movl ably connected to the side edges of the fixed section. Brackets 23 24 are secured centrally of the side strips 1 of the framework, said brackets being preferably provided with feet 25 to rest upon the floor and hinged at 26 to the side plates, whereby said brackets may be extended at right'angles to the-side strips when desired-for use or folded back i glainst said strips when not desired for use.
e brackets are referably of skeleton form,
with the upper e ges in a plane with the top of the framework, whereby when extended said brackets provide effective supports for the hinged leaves 22 as will be obvious.
One of the brackets, as 24, is downwardly inclined on its upper edge, as at 27, and to this inclined edge 1s. secured a triangularshaped section 28, hingfs 29 forming the medium of connection w ereby to permit said section 28 to be turned down upon the bracket or up into, vertical alinement therewith. The section 28 is so shaped and of such dimensions that when in operative osition in vertical alinement with the brac et roper its upper surface will support the a jacent leaf 22 in horizontal alinement with the fixed section 21. When said section 28 is turned down upon the bracket, however, the adjacent section 22 is supported at an incline from the fixed section 21, thereby roviding an incline writing desk or table, it eing understood that the incline 27 of the bracket is at such an an le as to provide the proper inclination of t e section 22 for wrlting purposes.
Having thus fully described the invention, what I claim as new is v A table-frame including suitable legs, a to secured thereto and extending beyond a s1d e thereof, a leaf hinged to the edge of the top at said side, a bracket hinged to said sidev therefrom for the remainder of its length, and a section hinged to the bracket adjacent of the frame and to .form a continilation of said portion of the bracket edge next to its hinged end, whereby said-leaf may be sup- I 5 ported in alinement with the top or disposed at a fixed angle thereto. v
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
