To all wwvit it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN C. HAcxErT, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of St. Louis, Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vrenches, of which the following is a specification containing a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.
My invention relates to improvements in wrenches; and it consists of the novel features herein shown, described, and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective of a wrench embodying the principles of my invention with the locking-lever in its unlocked position. Fig. 2 is a reverse perspective showing the locking-lever in its locked position. Fig. 3 is a central sectional detail. Fig. 4 is aperspective, upon an enlarged scale, of the movable jaws and their integral parts. 5 is a perspective of the gripping-washer.
Referring to the drawings in detail, the main frame of the wrench comprises the head 6, having a longitudinally-extending slot 7, the surface around the slot being depressed to form the slideway 8; the jaws 9 and 10, extending upwardly from the head at one end of the slot, said jaws being set at right angles to each other; the handle 11, extending from the opposite end of the head from the jaws, and the crank 12, extending from the handle. The faces of the head opposite the slideway 8 have transverse corrugations 13.
The movable jaws and their integral parts comprise the jaws 14 and 15 set at right angles to each other and mating with the jaws 9 and 10, the sliding head 16 forming a base for the jaws 14 and 15 and operating in the slideway S, the boss 17 extending downwardly from the head v16 through the slot 7, and the screw-threaded locking-post 1S inserted through the boss 17 and held in position by the pin 19.
The clamping-washer comprises a circular plate 20, having transverse corrugations 21 to engage the corrugations 13 and having a central opening 22 to receive the post 1S and having a guide-lug 23 extending downwardly into the slot 7, so as to hold the corrugations 21 in their transverse positions.
The locking-lever comprises the nut 24, screw-seated upon the lower end of the post 1S against the washer 20, and the handle 25 formed integral with the nut and extending outwardly, so that by moving the handle 25 one way the jaws 14 and 15 are released and may be moved to and fro in the slideway 8, and by moving the handle 25 the other way the movable jaws are rigidly clamped to the head 6.
In assembling the parts care should be taken and the nut 24'should tighten upon the post 1S, with the handle 25 approximately at right angles to the handle 11, so that when the handle 11 is held with the left hand and the handle 25 is grasped with the right hand and pushed away from the operator a good leverage is provided for tightening the nut 24 upon the post 18. A hook is formed upon the outer end of the lever 25, said hook being turned backwardly, as shown in Fig. 1, to prevent the hand from slipping off the lever 25 when the lever is pushed to the tight position. The sliding head 16 is slightly tapered, and the post 1S extends downwardly from the forward end of the sliding head. The jaws 14 and 15 are at right angles to the upper face of the sliding head. Vhen the movable aws are released by loosening the nut 24 and pushed tightly against an axlenut 26 (shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2) or other similar nut, the forward end of the sliding head will be elevated, and when the handle 25 is operated to tighten the nut 24 the forward end of the sliding head will be pulled down firmly upon the slideway 8, thus tipping the movable'jaws toward the rigid jaws and firmly grasping the axle-nut, so that when the axle-nut is unscrewed it will be retained and carried by the wrench, thus providing a handle for the operation of the greasy dirty nut and avoiding the necessity of applying the hands directly to the nut. l
