PATENT oFFIoE.
WILLIAM L. FROSS, OF SEATTLE, WASHINGTON.
COLLAR-BUTTON.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 10, 1906.
Application filed May 8,1905. Serial No. 259,276.
To all whom it may concern:
Befitiknown that I, WILLIAM L. FRoss, a citizen of the United States, residing at Seattle, in the county of King and State of Washington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Collar-Buttons, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of a collar-button embodying my invention, showing the supplemental head in holding position. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section of the same with the main and supplemental heads tilted up ready for insertion in the buttonhole of a shirt-band. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the device as represented in Fig. 1, and Fig. 4 is a front view as represented in Fig. 2.
The particular object of the invention is the provision of a supplemental head upon the shank of a collar-button, which is readily inserted in the buttonhole of the shirt and adapted to prevent the accidental withdrawal of the button therefrom, even though the hole is considerably enlarged through wear or other causes. I attain this object by the peculiar construction and combination of parts, as will be described hereinafter, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In said drawings the reference-letter a denotes the foot of a collar-button, formed or provided with a shank bprojecting upwardly therefrom and having adjacent of its outer extremity a bend c, and from thence the shank extends some distance to the rear, where it terminates in two oppositely-disposed lateral horns d. Said horns project interiorly into and eccentrically of a circular main head 6 and, with the sockets therein provided, forms a hinged connection with the shank, as is common to buttons having a lever-head. According to my invention, the shank is stamped or otherwise formed with a downwardly-directed tongue I), which normally protrudes forwardly, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, to furnish a resilient latch for retaining a supplemental head f in its engaged position. This head is of disk shape and is loosely fitted upon the shank and adapted when moved against the under side of the head 6 to be tilted therewith, as shown in Figs. 2 and 4, for easy insertion through the buttonhole of the shirt-band. After bein passed through the said buttonhole the hea f is tilted back to its original position and.
then pressed down below the bottom of the shank-tongue and engaged thereby, thus confining the shirt fabric between this head and the foot. The collar is then secured by the main head 6, as usual. To remove the button from the shirt, all that is re uired is to press inwardly with the thumb t e point of the said tongue to allow the head f being moved upwardly and tilted in a vertical direction with the head e, as before described.
The device is extremely simple and inexpensive in construction, yet perfectly adapted to the purposes for which intended, and is especially valuable with shirts having large buttonholes.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In combination with a button com rising a foot carrying a shank with a ead hinged to the shank, a supplemental head formed of a piece of material of substantially the same size as said foot and centrally provided with an opening receiving said shank to enable said supplemental head to be moved to engage the hinged head and to be tilted in unison therewith, and an inwardlymovable tongue on the shank having its bottom edge spaced from said foot.
2. In combination with a button comprising a foot carrying a shank with a head hinged to the shank, a supplemental head formed of a circular piece of material centrally provided with an aperture of such size as to enable said head to be slid along the entire length of said shank and to be brought into engagement and tilted in unison with said hinged head, and a tongue struck out from the top portion of the shank and having its lower end movable inwardly to enable the supplemental head to pass thereby, the lower gdge of said tongue being spaced from said oot.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM L. FROSS.
