Be it known that I, HENRY H. Dnwrir, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Guyahoga and State of Ohio, have inventcd s. certain new and useful Im rovement in Corner- Sta '8, of which the fol owing is a full, clear, am exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to corner-stays for boxes or trunks and the like, and particularly stays constructed of sheet metal, and has for its object the construction of a device of this character that will dispense with the necessity for dovetailing or heveling the ends -and sides of the box, that will ri diy support the ends and sides against d isp ecemont, and that will combine facility of application to the box sides and ends with strength and aim )lieity of construction.
denerally speaking, my invention may be defined as consisting of the combinations of elements embodied in the claims hereto annoxed.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 repre sents a perspective view of the corner of a box, showing applied thereto a stay constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 represcl'lts a perspective view of such a stay. Fig. 3 represents a sectional view of such stay, taken on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2; and Fig. 4 represents a similar view of a modification of the stay shown in the pre ceding figures.
The stay 1 consists of an outer member and an inner member made of sheet metal,
preferably gal 'vonizcd sheet-steel. The outer member is bent to form two fiat side portions or plates 2, the planes of which are at r' ht angles to each other. Each of the ates 2 is wovided with an inwardlw rojoeting longitudinal rib 3, adapted to lit mto a corresponding rabbct or recess in the outer surface of the adjacent end 4 and side 5 of the box to which it is applied. Outside said rib are holes 10 for securing the dates to the box. The corner or apex of said outer member is bent inwardly to form a reiintrant c11 gle 6, the sides 7 of said angle being bent at right angles to the planesof the side portions 2. The lengths of the sides l are governed by the thickness of the material of which the box is made. In Fig. 4 there is illustrated a. modification of the stay shown in Figs. 1 to 3. In the construction shown in-the latter figure more of the metal of the outer member 2 is employml for forming the reiintrant angle 6 than is the case with the device shown in the other lignres, and the surplus metal after forming the legs '2 is bent at right or les tov the 'biscetor of such angle to form a at bearing-surface 32. The apex of the inner member is sumlarlv flattened to form a Marin -surface l3, and the said surfaces are seem-err together by rivets 14. As in the former modification the sides of the reintrant angle form stops for the side and end of the box.
In assembling, the stay is slipped onto the side and end of the box with the ribs 3 in engagement with the rabbets. The skirt or extension of the outer member covers and protects the adjacent portion of the bottom of the? box.
Having thus described my invent on, what I'claim as new, and desire to secure hy'Lcttors-Patent, is

2. A corner-stay for boxes and the like comprising inner and outer sheet-metal angular members adapted to embrace the ad jacent ends of the side and end pieces of a box, the outer member having a reentrant angular projection and the inner member having a angular portion, and means for securing sue angular projections together, said means comprisin ears bent from one of such projections and engaging opposite sides of the other projection, substantially as specified.
3. A corner-stay for boxes and the like comprising inner and outer sheet-metal angular members adapted to embrace the adj acentends of the side and end pieces of a box, the outer member havin areentrant angular projection at the apex t ereof opposite the apex of said inner member, and means for securing the said members together, said means comprising ears struck out from the sides of said inner member and bent into the plane of the sides of the angular projection on the outer member, and rivets extending through said ears and the sides of said projection, substan tially as specified.
4. A corner-stay for boxes and the like comprising inner and outer sheet-metal angular members adapted to embrace the adjacent ends of the side and end pieces of a box, the outer member having a reenirant angular projection extending to the inner member, and means connecting said members, the outer member extending below the inner member to form a skirt for inclosin and protecting the adj acent portion of the iottom of the box or receptacle, substantially as specified.
