PIN TONGUE AND HINGE JOINT.
APPLICATION PILED MAB.Z7,1906.
THE NORRIS PETERS cu, wAsuma-mu. n. c
' UNITED STATES PATENT ()FFICE.
EUGENE W. MOREHOUSE, OF PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND, ASSIGNOR TO B. A. BALLOU & COMPANY, OF PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND, A
COPARTNERSHIP.
PIN-TONGUE AND HINGE-JOINT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 10, 1906.
Application filed March 27, 1905. serial No. 262.360.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EUGENE W. MORE- HOUSE, of Providence, county of Providence, and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pin- Tongues and Hinge-Joints; and I do hereby declare the following specification, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, forming a part of the same, to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates to the pin-tongue and hinge-joint of brooches and similar articles, and is especially designed for articles of this class in which the pin-tongue has a lateral or sidewise movement or swing with relation to the body portion. The object of ,the invention is to produce a pin-tongue and hingejoint of this character which is easily assembled and efficient in operation and one that is strong, simple, and cheap to produce.
To these ends my invention consists in certain features of construction to be hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a plan view of my improved pintongue. Fig. 2 is a plan view of a brooch embodying my pin-tongue and hinge-joint in open position. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the same in closed position. Fig. 4is a side elevation of the same, and Fig. 5 is a side elevation of a modification.
A represents the body portion or front plate of a brooch provided with the usual pincatch B adjacent one of itsends. At or near the opposite end the body portion A is provided with a stud C, having an enlarged head or shoulder c. The catch B and the stud C may be secured to the body portion A in any desired manner, as by solder, or may be made integral with said body portion. The pintongue D is provided with the usual pointed end (1, and the other end is bent downward and inward and terminates in a circular portion (1, which is in a plane substantially parallel with the body portion of the pin-tongue, as shown in the drawings. The circular portion d is left openat d to admit the passage of the stud C.
To unite the pin-tongue D to the body portion A, the stud O is inserted into the circular portion d and said circular portion closed by a pair of pliers or other suitable means. The circular portion d is made of such a size that when closed it will allow a swinging movement of the pin-tongue upon the stud C, the pin-tongue being held in place upon the stud O by the head 0.
When the pointed end (2 of the pin-tongue D is pressed toward the body portion of the brooch in entering the catch B to close the pin, a spring action will be set up in the opposite end of the pin-tongue suflicient to hold said pointed end in engagement with the catch. This spring action can be increased as desired by simply bending the circular portion (1 at an angle from the body portion of the pin-tongue.
Fig. 5 shows a modified form of stud for use in some forms of pins where the body portion A is curved instead of straight, in which case it is desirable to lengthen the stud O and provide it with a shoulder a for the circular portion (1 to rest upon in order that the pintongue D and circular portion d will be in a horizontal plane when closed.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A pin-tongue for brooches and similar articles pointed at one end and bent at an an gle near its other end and terminating in a circular portion the axis of which is substantially parallel with said bent portion, substantially as described.
2. A pin-tongue for'brooches and similar articles pointed at one end and having the other end bent downward and back upon itself and terminating in a circular portion the axis of which is substantially parallel with the downward-bent portion, substantially as described.
3. In an article of the class described, the
combination with a body portion of a pin-' tongue extending substantially parallel to said body portion, one end of said tongue be ing pointed and the other end bent substantially at right angles to said body portion and pivoted to said body portion so as to swing substantially parallel with said stud, sublatkerally vxiith recllation t3 said bodyportion, stantially as described. su stantia l as escribe 4. In an rticle of the class described, the EUGENE MOREHOUSE' 5 combination, with the body portion provided. Witnesses: with a stud, of a pin-tongue pivoted on said W. H. THURSTON, stud and provided With a portion extending i J. H. THURSTON.
