RoBEnTs, citizens of the United States, residing at Loyal, in the county of Clark, State of WVisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Saw-Guides; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to saw-guides, and more particularly to guides for band-saws, and has for its object to provide a guide which will include a novel arrangement of parts and which will be adjustable to suit different conditions.
Another object is to provide a structure in which certain parts thereof may be readily removed when desired.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description, and it will be understood that changes in the specific construction shown and described may be made within the scope of the claims and that any suitable materials may be used without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawings forming a portion of this specification, and in which like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views, Figure 1 is a side elevation of the present invention applied to a saw. Fig. 2 is a top )lan view of the guide. Fig. 3 is a section t rough one of the heads, taken on line 3 3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal section of the bracket, taken on line 4 1 of Fig. 2, the attaching-bolts being shown in dotted lines. Fig. 5 is a detail section taken on line 5 5 of Fig. 2 to show the arrangement of the setscrews.
Referring now to the drawings, the present invention comprises a bracket 5, comprising upper and lower plates 6 and 7, respectively, the former resting upon the latter, and these plates are secured together by means of attaching-bolts 8 engaged therein. In their mutually adjacent faces the plates have transversely-extending registering recesses 9 which form horizontal passages 10, opening through the front and rear edges of the brackets, and in these passages there are slidably engaged a pair of parallel arms 11, which are bifurcated horizontally at their forward ends, as shown at 12, to receive perforated ears 13, carried by horizontally-e); tending heads 14. The upper plate 6 has threaded openings 15 therein, communicating with the passages 10, and in which are engaged set-screws 16 operable to impinge against the arms to hold the latter against movement in the passages.
Between the arms 11 the bracket is cut inwardly from its forward edge to form a recess 17, in which there is journaled a eripherally-grooved roller 18, this roller raving trunnions 20, which are revolubly engaged in longitudinal bearings 21, formed in the bracket and communicating with the recess 17, these bearings being formed by registering semicircular grooves 22, formed in the mutually adjacent faces of the plates 6 and 7 at opposite sides of the recess, and it will thus be seen that by removing the attachingbolts 8 the plate 6 may be lifted from the plate 7 to permit of removal of the arms 11 and the roller 18.
Pivot-bolts 23 are engaged in the spaced portions at the forward ends of the arms 11 and. in the perforations of the ears 13, so that the heads are movable upon the pivot-bolts to extend at different angles to the arms, and the pivot-bolts may be operated to clamp the heads against movement.
The heads 14 are provided with longitudinal passages 24, the outer ends of which are threaded, as shown at 25, and engaged in these threaded portions are thumb-screws 26. Revolubly engaged in the inner unthreaded portions of the passages 24 there are spindles 27, which are carried by disks 28, these disks lying against the inner ends of the heads 14, and cylindrical bosses 29 are formed centrally upon the mutually adjacent faces of these disks, these bosses being ongaged in central openings 30 of rubber or other resilient pads, which are circular in form and which lie against the surfaces of the disks.
In use a band-saw is disposed with its rearward portion between the arms 11 and with its rearward edge in a peripheral groove of the roller 18, after which the heads 14 may be shifted with respect to the arms to bring 'the rearward edge portions of the pads into engagement with the sides of the saw, after which the set-screws 26 may be operated to cause the ads to bear against the saw with sufficient orce to give the desired tension, it being understood that when the set-screws are screwed into the passages reduced inner ends 26, formed on these set-screws, are brought into engagement with the outer end of the spindles to move the latter.
What is claimed is l. A guide for saws comprising a bracket, parallel arms slidably mounted in the bracket, means for holding the arms at different points of their movement, -a roller removably ournaled in the bracket between the arms and having a peripheral groove, heads pivoted to the arms at one end for movement to eXtend at different angles thereto, means for holding the heads at different points of their movement, said heads and arms being adapted to receive a saw therebetween, said roller being adapted to receive the rearward edge of the saw in its groove, saw engaging members revolubly mounted in the heads and means for adjusting the saw-engaging members.
2. A guide for saws comprising a bracket, parallel arms slidably mounted in the bracket and extending forwardly therebe yond, means for holding the arms at different points of their movement, said bracket having a recess in its forward edge between the arms, a peripherally grooved roller journaled in the recess, heads carried by the forward ends of the arms and adjustable with respect thereto, and saw-engaging members revolubly mounted in the heads.

A device of the class described comprising a bracket, forwardly-extending arms carried by the brackets, heads adjustably connected with the forward ends of the arms and having passages therein, saw-engaging members, spindles carried by the members and revolubly engaged in the inner ends of the passages, said members being adapted to receive a saw therebetween and screws engaged in the outer ends of the passages and operable to move the spindles and the mem bers toward each other.

A device of the class described comprising a'bracket including separable plates, registering recesses formed in the mutually adjacent faces of the plates, arms slidably engaged in the registering recesses, said plates being cut away at their forward edges between the arms to form a recess and havlng registering grooves in their mutually adI jacent faces communicating with the recess at opposite sides thereof to form bearings, a} roller having trunnions engaged in the bearings and saw-engaging members carried by the arms, said members being adapted to receive a saw therebetween with its edge against the periphery of the roller. 5. A device of the class described comprising a bracket, horizontal arms slidably mounted in the bracket and extending forwardly thereof, means for holding the arms at different points of their movement, horizontal heads pivoted to the forward ends of the arms for movement to eXtend at different angles to each other, said heads slanting normally forwardly and inwardly, means for holding the heads at different points of their movement, disks revolubly mounted at the inner ends of the heads, resilient pads carried by the mutually adjacent faces of the disks, said pads being adapted to receive a saw therebetween and means for moving the disks toward each other to increase the ten- I sion of the pads against the saw.
