GREASE-CUP.
Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JAMES POWELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cincinnati, Hamilton county, State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Grease-Cups; and I do declare the following to be a clear, full, and exact description of the invention, attention being called to the accompanying drawings, with the reference characters marked thereon, which form also a part of this specification.
The invention relates to improvements in so-called grease-cups, being a class of lubricators in which the lubricant used is of a viscid consistency, like grease, for instance, and is expelled by a pressure-actuated follower.
The invention consists of certain features relating more particularly to an improved construction of the follower which expels the grease, as more fully described and claimed hereinafterand as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 shows the grease-cup in vertical cross-section. Fig. 2 is an elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail view of the follower, partly in section.
5 is the cup proper, provided with a screwthreaded attaching-nipple 6 for connection in position where the device is to be used. 7 is the cap for the same, removably connected thereto by means of a screw-threaded connection. The grease discharges through a perforation in the attaching-nipple, such discharge being controlled by a key 8, fitted into a housing 9, which extends transversely across the bottom of the cup. This key has a port 1 1 between its ends, which when alined with the perforated attaching-nipple and an outlet-opening 12 in housing 9, as shown in Fig. 1, permits discharge of the lubricant. The ends of this key extend to the outside, as shown in Fig. 2, to be accessible for manipulation.
The grease is forced through the outlet by means of a pressure-actuated follower-head 13, the pressure being due to the presence of a spring 14 between it and the top of cap 7. For its guidance this follower is provided with a stem 15, which extends through an opening in said cap. The parts are held together, particularly when cap 7 is removed to permit replenishing of the cup, by means like a shoulder or collar 16, provided on stem 15.
After the cup is supplied cap 7 is replaced in position and screwed down over the cup, with the follower on top of the grease. With the outlet 12 closed the screwing manipulation of the cap is continued for a few more turns, whereby spring 14 is compressed and put under operative pressure, because the follower being resisted by the grease cannot follow down with the cap. The device is now ready for operation and discharges as soon as key 8 is manipulated to 0 en the outlet, as shown in Fig. 1. The fol ower descends with the grease as it eXpels this latter until the action of spring 14 is exhausted for the time being, which condition is indicated by the position of collar 16, which then rests against cap 7, as shown in Fig. 2. Action is again imparted by screwing down cap 7, which manipulation is periodically repeated until the cup is empty. It is of course essential that the follower fits tightly into the cup to prevent any lubricant from leaking past it. This is accomplished by a leather Jacking or so-called cup-leather 17, part 0 which near its edge is turned up to form a flange 18, which bears closely against the inside of cup 5. This close fit renders reinsertion of the follower neces sary after each filling of the cup very inconvenient, as this upturned edge 18 being with out rigidity becomes frequently upset when coming in contact with the edge of the cup. This destroys the shape of the cupleather, as well as rendering the insertion diflicult. To overcome this objection, I provide means to support this flange 18 and also the free edge of the same, such means also projecting over this edge so as to be in advance of it when the flange is inserted. These means consist of a lining 19 on the under side of the cup-leather, which lining is provided with a flange 21, the edge of which projects over the edge of the cup-leather, as best shown in Fig. 3, to prevent the same from becoming reversed and upset during insertion of the follower. In order to permit the leather to adjust itself against the inside of the cup to prevent leakage, I provide openings 22 in the side of the lining to permit the compressed grease to act from the inside against the leather, thereby pushing the same outwardly and against the inside of the cup and maintaining contact with the latter. A screw 23 may serve to hold both-that is, the leather and its liningin place.
