LATCH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 26, 1906.
Application filed August 10, 1905. Serial No. 273,584.
To (LZZ whom it may concerni Be it known that I, HELMER H. ENGE- BRETSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Albee, in the county of Grant, State of South Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Latches; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to door-latches.
One object of the invention is to provide an exceedingly simple, inexpensive, durable, and efiicient means for locking screen or other doors.
Another object of the invention resides in the provision of a lock embodying such characteristics that the screen or other door will lock automatically u on closing of the same.
With these and ot er objects in view the present invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described, shown in the accompanying drawings, and articularly pointed out in the appended c aim, it being understood that changes in the form, proportion, size, and minor details may be made within the scope of the claim without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a view illustrating a portion of a screen-door and a doorcasing, showing the manner of locking the screen-door. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the receiving portion of the latch, partly in section, the door being shown in edge view.
Referring now more particularly to the accompanying drawings, the reference character 1 designates a portion of a door-casing to which one portion of my improved latch mechanism is secured.
The receiving member of the latch consists of the members 2 and 3, the member 2 having upwardly-directed ears 4 at one end, between which the member 3 is pivoted by means of the pivot-pin 5. The lower member 2 is provided with transverse perforations 5, through which are passed screws 7 for the securing of the said member fixedly to the door-casing. This lower member 2 is provided with a hole 8 near its outer end for the reception and support of a helical spring 9, which s ring is connected with the member 2 and t e lower face of the upper pivoted member 3 to hold the latter normally in engagement with the upper face of the lower member 2. Formed in the u per face of the lower member 2 in advance 0 the said hole 8 is a recess 10 for the reception of the depending lug 11 of the up er pivoted member 3, there being another ug 12 depending from the said pivoted member 3 in advance of the aforesaid lug 11, said lugs forming a hook for engagement with the keeper on the door.
The reference character 13 designates a screen or other door, to the inner face of which the feet 14 and 15 of the latch-plate 16 are secured in any suitable manner. This plate 16 lies in a horizontal lane and is provided with a short slot 17. pon closing of the door 13 the forward edge of the plate 16 contacts with the beveled edge 18 of the pivoted member 3, raising the latter against the action of the aforesaid spring 9 until the lug 12 falls into the slot 17 of said plate, and thereby automatically locks the door, the lug 11 positively preventing movement of the latch-plate inwardly between the members 2 and 3, and thereby positively insuring the engagement of the lug 12 in the slot of the latch-plate. I A
What is claimed is- A latch comprising a receiving member and a plate for engagement by the receiving member, the receiving member comprising a fixed member having a hole and a recess therein, a pivoted member provided with spaced lugs one of said lugs being ada ted for engagement in the recess of the ed member to limit the inward movement of the said plate, and a spring arranged in the hole of the fixed member and engaged with the mally in engagement.
In testimony'whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
HELMER H. ENGEBRETSON.
