Be it known that 1, Annette JoRDAnL, a
citizenof the United States, residing at Carnegie, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fireproof Floor Construction; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
' This invention relates to new and useful improvements in fireproof construction for floors, and comprises various details of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts, which will be hereinafter fully described and then specifically defined in the appended claims.
My invention is illustratedin the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a sectional View through a floor made in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2-is a sectional view taken on line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig; 3 is an enlarged end elevation of 'one of the floor-beams, showing the manner of attachment. of the concrete block thereto; and Fig. 4 is a top plan view showing one of said blocks as fastened to the beam.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates the steel floor beams or girders, of structural metal, and B designates a concrete block made, preferably, -with reinforcing-rods C, running lengthwise thereof, and also provided with a reinforcing-rod E, which is bent at its longitudinal center, forming a loop E, said rod also being bent at right angles at E where it engages the rods C, as shown clearly in Figs. Sand 4 of the drawings. The ends F of the rod E are bent hook-shaped to engage one of the rods C, and the portions of the rod intermediate each hook end of the loop converge, as shown clearly in Fig. 4 of the drawings. Said rods are incorporated in the block while the material of which they are made is in a plastic condition, and the upper portion of each block is recessed away,
as at H, said recess extending laterally underneath an overhanging part H of the block, forming a recess to receive one of the fianges A of the-girder A. I Said loop E projects above the bottom of the recessed portion of said block, and N is a key-plate which is passed through said loop and its inner end. adapted to rest upon one of the flanges of said steel floor-beam A, and a plate 0 rests upon the bottom of the recess of said block and is adapted to support the outer end of said plate N. The block being securelyheld to the girder in the manner described, the remaining space formed by said recess in the block is filled with cement mortar Q upon either side of the web of the girder, thus securely anchoring the block to the girder.
Blocks R, of concrete-or cement, are then placed one upon each side of the web of the girder and resting upon said block B and the concrete filling Q, leaving a shouldered portion between the opposite outer faces of the blocks R and the upper ends of the inclined or' beveled surfaces B of said block B, upon which shoulders the wedges J are positioned, and upon which wedges the boards M rest. which latter are provided for the purpose of supporting the centering-timbers P, which extend from girder to girder in the manner shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings. It will be noted that the ends of the centering-timbers are beveled, thus forming a space intermediate their ends and the blocks R, which space is adapted to be filled with cement the centering-timbers are covered and form a fillet between the floor-slabs I and blocks R. A filling of cement, concrete, or any suitable composition I, forming floor-slabs, is then filled in upon the centering-timbers and upon the upper ends of the structural beams and the blocksR. Suitable tie-rods W are embedded in the concrete material forming said floor-slabs and extending, preferably, over several spans of the girders. After the ocment composition forming the floor-slabs is set the centering-timbers may be removed by first withdrawing thewedges J, which will allow the boards and centering-timbers tobe easily removed, this being done after the cement I has thoroughly set.
- The suspended ceiling-slab S, which is made, preferably, of cement mortar or concrete reinforced. with metallic irons, has its opposite edges bent at an angle, as at 'S, conforming to the beveled surfaces B against which said angled ends contact to support the ceiling-slabs. Prior, however, to the inserting of the suspended ceiling-slabs in place the centering-timbers are removed after the cement filling above the same has been set by simplv removing the wedges J and the supporting-boards M.
From the foregoing it will be noted that by' the provision of a fireproof construction for flooring made in accordance with my invention a simple and efficient construction is af forded in which the girders are. securely embedded in the floor-slabs or filling, while the concrete blocks which .are anchored to the girders form means for supporling the ceilingslabs, and b v the provision of the fillets, l which are formed intermediate the beveled ends of the centering-timbers and the blocks R, an ornamental means is afforded for se curely holding the latter against tllt opposite sides of the web of the girder.
Bv the provision of the blocks B made in accordance with my invention a simple and efficient means is afforded wherehythe flanges of the floorbeams may be ampl protected against fire, corrosion, &c., as well as forming 3 supports for the blocks lt, floor-slabs, and the i wooden centering, as well as the sus 'iended I ceiling-slabs.
Having thus fullv described nrv invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A fireproof floor construction comprising flanged girders, composition blocks recessed upon their upper surfaces and adapted to receive one of the flanges of a girder, a reinforcing-rod incorporated in said block and bent to form a loop which extends through the bottom of the recess in the block, a l c v plate passing through said loop and engaging one of the flanges of the girder, a cement filling to said recess over said locking-plate and i about the girder, composition blocks resting upon said block which is secured to the girder, and cement floor-slabs having shoul ders formed in the under surface thereof to engage the outer faces of said cement blocks, as set forth.

A fireproof floor construction comprising flanged girders, composition blocks rel cessed upon their upper surfaces and adapted to receive one of the flanges of a girder, a rel inforcing-rod incorporated in said block and bent to form a loop which extends through l the bottom of the recess in the block, a kevl plate passing through said loop and engaging l l l l l l I one of the flanges of the girder, a cement filling to said recess over said locking-plate and about the girder, composition blocks resting upon said block which is secured to the girder, cement floor-slabs having shoulders formed in the under surface thereof to engage the outer faces of said cement blocks, the opposite edges of said composition blocks having inclined edges, and reinforced ceilingslabs having angled ends adapted to rest upon the inclined edges of said. blocks, as set forth.
3. A fireproof floor construction comprising flanged girders, composition blocks recessed upon their upper surfaces'and adapted to receive one of the flanges of a girder, a-rcinforcing-rod incorporated in said block and bent to form a loop which extends through the bottom of the recess in the bloclglongitudinal reinforcing-barsin said block engaged by said rod which is bent to form a loop, a locking-plate passing through said loop and its inner end resting upon the flange of the girder, a plate resting upon the bottom of the recess of said block and supporting the outer end of said locking-plate, a cement filling for said recess, cement blocks resting upon said filling and composition block and in contact with the opposite faces of the web of the girder, floor-slabs of cement having shoulders upon the under surfaces thereof adapted to engage the opposite faces of said cement blocks, and reinforced ceiling-slabs having angled ends resting upon the angled edges of said composition block, as set forth.
4. A fireproof construction for flooring comprising flanged girders, composition blocks recessed upon their upper faces,'reinforcing-rials running parallel to each other in said block. an angled reinforcing-rod bent to form a loop which extends through the bottom of the recess in the block, the endsof said rod which is bent to form a loop being hook-shaped adapted to engage one of said parallel rods, a locking-plate extending through said loop and its inner end resting upon one of the flanges of the irder, a support for the outer end of said locking-plate, a
cement filling for said recess, cement blocks l resting upon said filling and the composition block, and having each its inner face in contactwith the web of a girder, floor-slabs of composition having shoulders upon their under surfaces engaging said cement blocks, and reinforced ceiling-slabs having angled ends adapted to rest against the inclined edges of said composition blocks, as set forth.
