ALEXANDER MENCZARSKI, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
BUILDING CONSTRUCTION.
$PECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 745,068, dated November 24, 1903.
Application filed May 27, 1903. herial No. 158,973. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALEXANDER MENCZAR- SKI, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, haveinvented new and useful Improvements in Building Construction, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to a fireproof building construction; and it comprises a peculiarly-constructed span of material laid plastic between the I-beams and being allowed to setto form the floors and ceilings.
This specification is an exact description of one example of myinvention, while the claims define the actual scope thereof.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, which represents a sectional perspective view of the invention.
a indicates the horizontal metal I-beams, which are laid alongside each other, as usual. In carrying out the invention a suitable scaffolding (indicated at b) is laid continuously under the beams to form a temporary flooring or support, which is placed slightly below the bottom flanges of the'beams, as illustrated. On this scaffolding is laid a mass 0 of cement, mortar, or other plastic composition in semifiuid or mortar -like state, the same being spread uniformly over the scaffolding b and under the bottom flanges of the I-beams, so as completely to cover and embed the same. When this composition 0 is still'in plastic form-that is to say, before such composition has seta mass of cement concrete d is laid on the mortar between the beams and tightly tamped down thereon, the
' rial b to an elevation preferably level with the upper flanges of the beams. The structure thus constituted is allowed to set, and after this the scaffolding b is withdrawn, thus leaving the structure self-sustaining. The
main or principal element d bears on or just above the base-fianges of the beams, and the ceiling c adheres thereto and is supported thereby. This adhesion is made certain by applying the stratum 61 while the stratum c is yet plastic. The stratum .e is principally a flooring, and the cement forming the same may best be mixed with cinders or the like. The arched upper surface of the main stratum d gives extra strength thereto and serves to throw the load on the flooring outward toward the beams, thus greatly increasing the strength of the structure.
Various changes in the form, proportions, and minor details of my invention may be resorted to at will without departing from the spirit and scope thereof. Hence I consider myself entitled to all such variations as may lie within the intent of'my claims.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A building construction, comprising the combination with flanged beams running side by side, of a main stratum of plastic material laid between and supported by said beams and having its upper surface arched between the beams, an under stratum joined to the main stratum and extending over the bottom surface thereof to form the ceiling, and a top stratum laid on the arched upper surface of the main stratum.
2. A building construction, comprising the combination with the flanged beams running side by side, of a bottom stratum or mass of plastic material laid along the bottom edges of the beams to form the ceiling, a main stratum or mass of plastic material laid on the bottom stratum and to which the bottom stratum is caused to adhere, the main stratum bearing on the flanges of the beams to sustain the entire structure between the beams, and a mass or stratum of plastic material laid over the main stratum and extending level with the upper edges of the beams to form the floor.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ALEXANDER MENGZARSKI.
