The 'aw A has two principal partsthe shank 2 to engage the pipe, nut, or other object to be turned. I have shown both jaws as designed especially'to engage pipes and provided with teeth. It is, however, to beunderstood that they may be otherwise more especially adapted to engage nuts and be free of teeth, if desired. The complementary jaw B is mounted to slide upon the shank A toward and from the hooked end A. This jaw is preferably composed of two parts-the clip 0, which embraces the shank A and the filler-block F, the two parts being secured together, as by rivets b. The body of the shank is of substantially uniform cross-section, and the clip 0 and filler-block F are so spaced as to form an openingadapted to receive the shank with a free-sliding fit.

The opposite or pivot end of the shank is preferably extended farther than is necessary to secure strength of metal about the pivot and is provided with a lug a, o posing in position to the lug f. Between t ese lugs and occupying the space between the side faces of the clip and handle and between the shank and filler-block is placed a helically-coiled wire spring G, which acts by compression to separate these lugs, and thereby force the two jaws together. To secure the end of the spring bearing upon lug a, I prefer to provide it with a pin g, which enters the coil of the spring. A spring is easily inserted by throwing the jaws into the closed position, as shown in Fig. 1, pushing the spring into the socket, and compressing it until it may be allowed to expand over the pin g. This spring is at all times inclosed and protected where it cannot be injured by throwing the wrench about. i
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is Y 1. A wrench comprising a jaw having a shank, a complementary jaw lying alongside the shank and having a clip embracing and adapted to slide upon said shank, a handle pivoted to said shank and complementary jaw, and a spring lying alongside of and between said shank and the complementary'jaw and engaging said parts to close the jaws.
' 2. A wrench comprising a jaw having a shank, a complementary jaw lying alongside adapted to slide upon said shank, a handle having two separated webs adapted to lie on opposite sides of and pivotally connected with said shank and complementary jaw, and a spring extending lengthwise the shank and between said shank and complementary aw and between the two sides of said clip and handle-webs and acting to close said jaws.
3; A wrench comprising a jaw having a shank extending at right angles thereto, a complementary jaw having a clip embracing and adapted to slide upon said shank, a handle comprising two separated webs joined by a connecting-web along one side edge and having two transversely-separated pivots at its inner end connected respectively with said shank and complementary jaw, and a jawclosing helical spring extending lengthwise the shank and lying between the sides of the handle and of the clip and between said shank and complementary jaw and at opposite ends respectively engaging said shank and complementary j aw.

A wrench comprising a jaw having a shank, a complementary jaw having a clip embracing and adapted to slide on said shank, said complementary jaw being cut away between the clips next the shank to form a spring-receivingchamberopeningrearwardly, a handle comprising two separated webs hav- 1 ing two transversely-separated pivots at one end connected respectively with said shank and complementary aw, said shank having a spring-supporting projection between said handle-webs, and a coiled spring engaging said projection by one end and with its other end in the chamber between the clip and engaging the complementary jaw.
5. A wrench comprising a jaw having a shank, a pivot near the outer end of the shank and a side projection rearwardly of said pivot and toward the same side of the shank as the jaw-face, a complementary jaw comprising a block and a clip surrounding the shank and sliding thereon, said block having sliding engagement with the shank near the toothed edge and being cut away back thereof to form a spring-receiving pocket within the clip and between the shank and complementary jaw, a handle having two transversely-placed pivots near one end engaging respectively with the shank and the complementary jaw, and a coiled spring ongaging by one end with the side projection at the rear of the shank and with its other end in the spring-receiving pocket of the complementary j aw.
