FRANK E. KNAPP, OF QUINCY, MICHIGAN.
OMBINED HINGE AND SUPPORT FOR EDGEWISE-MOVABLE GATES.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK E. KNAPP, a
'citizen of the United States, residing at Movable Gates, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to gates, more particularly to farm-gates, and has for its object to provide a simply-constructed and efiicient hinge mechanism whereby the gate may be adjusted to swing at any desired distance from the ground.
With these and other objects in view, which will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in certain novel features of construction, as hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and in which corresponding parts are denoted by like designat- 1n fol m of embodiment of the invention capable of carrying thesame into practical operation, it being understood that the invention is not necessarily limited thereto, as various changes in the shape, proportions, and general assemblage of the parts may be resorted to without departing from the principle of the invention or sacrificing any 'of its advantages.
In the drawings thus employed, Figure 1 is a side view of an edgewise--movable gate with the improved combined hinge and support applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a front. view; and Fig. 3 is an end view, enlarged, of the combined hinge and support.
The improved hingedevice may be applied to any of the various farm-gates of the balanced form, but for the purpose of illustration is shown applied to an ordinary structure of this character composed of horizontal spaced rails 10 and vertical end and intermediate members 11 and reaching from the hinge-post 12 to the latch-post 13.
The improved hinge device comprises a rod 14, mounted vertically by hangers or brackets 15 16 from the post 12 and extending between the post and gate and rotative in the brackets. A bracket 17 is provided, preferably disposed on the side of the gate opposite to the rod 14 and provided with lateral arms 18 19, extending through the gate and slidably enga ing the rod. The bracket 17 is also provide with oppositely-extending wings 2O 21, carrying rollers 22 23 for bearing Specification of Letters Patent.

characters, is illustrated the preferred Patented J une 19,1906.
beneath one of the rails 10 of the gate. A set-screw 25 operates through the lower arm 19 for bearing upon the rod 14 to clamp the bracket to therod and cause it to partake of the rotary motion of the same. By this simple arrangement it is obvious that the bracket 17 may be adjusted to any desired point upon the rod 14; to hold the gate at a corresponding elevation and the gate free to be operated with equal facility at any of the adjusted points.
The latch-post is provided with the usual means for supporting the free end of the gate when closed. The device also permits the gate to be elevated for passage over snow or ice in winter, as will be obvious.
The device is simple in construction, can be inexpensively manufactured, and applied with slight and unimportant modifications to any of the various forms and sizes of farmgates in common use.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is 1. A gate-hinge mechanism'comprising a rod, means for supporting said rod rotatively upon the hinge-post, a bracket having spaced extensions for slidably engaging said rod, means carried by said bracket for movably supporting a gate, and means for adjustably clamping said bracket to said rod.
2. A gate-hinge mechanism comprising a rod, means for supporting said rod spaced from the hinge-post, a bracket disposed in advance of said rod and spaced therefrom and provided with extensions for slidably engaging said rod, means carried by said bracket for movably supporting one of the horizontal members of a gate between the bracketand rod, and means for adjustably clamping said bracket to said rod.
'3. A gate-hinge mechanism comprising a rod, means for supporting said rod rotatively upon the hinge-post, a bracket for slidably engaging said rod, and provided with oppositely-projecting extensions, spaced rollers carried by said extensions for bearing beneath one of the horizontal members of the gate, and means for clamping said bracket ad'ustably to said rod.
in testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
