UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES W. GIFT, OF FAIRMOUNT, INDIANA, ASSIGNOR TO LUTHER R.
GIFT, OF SAME PLACE.
WEATHER STRlP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 368,917, dated August 23, 1887. Application filed May 5, 1887. Serial No. 237,207. (No model.)
.To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CHARLES W. GIFT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fairmount, in the county of Grant and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and use ful Improvements in Weather-Strips, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to weather strips. My object is to combine with a door an improved weather-strip, as will be fully understood froin the following description, taken in connection with the annexed drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a portion of a doorcasing illustrating my improvement applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a front view illustrating the flap shut. Fig. 3 is a vertical cross-section through the casing and sill, illustrating the door when shut and the flap closed against the sill.
Referring to the annexed drawings by letter, A designates the door casing or frame, and A the door thereof. Near the'lower end of the door A, I secure a bracket, D, which is recessed to receive the upper end of the flap E. This flap, which is practically the weatherstrip, has beveled ends, as indicated in Fig. 3. This flap is connected to the bracket D by spring-hinges H, the leaves of which that are secured to the upper side of the flap E afford abutments for stop-plates S, which are secured to the bracket on the shutter. These stop-plates should be adjustable by slotting them, as shown in Fig. 2, for the purpose of compensating for wear.
At the hinged side of the door upon the end of the flap E is secured a spring-plate, F, having an upturned portion, a to which may be applied an anti-friction roller. This plate, with its upturned portion (1*, is adapted to bear against a V-shaped cam, G, provided with ears and secured rigidly to the upright part of the casing A in such relation to the flap or weather-strip that in the act of closing the door the said strip will be snugly held to the sill-piece O, the spring-plate serving to receive and relieve the strip of the shock attendant upon closing the door.
At the opposite side of the casing is an inclined flange, B, provided with ears I), and inclined with respect to the lower beveled edge of the flap E, so that this flap will be directed closely to the sill in closing the door. It will thus be seen that I provide a door with a weather-strip having a spring-hinge for raising it to a given point, adjustable, as stated, and that I have provided a simple device for depressing this strip in the act of to with an upturned end bearing or buffer, a V- shaped cam secured to the casing of the door, and an inclined plate, B, located at the upright of the threshold of the door, substantially as described.
2. In a weather-strip for doors, the combi nation of the door-frame and door hinged thereto, the recessed bracket or strip D, secured to the door, the hinged strip or flap E, the spring-actuated hinges H, connecting the said strip E to the bracket D, the verticallyadjustable stops secured to the bracket D and adapted to contact with one of the leaves of the spring-hinge H, the spring plate or buffer F, provided with an upturned elastic end, and the angular cam G,secured to the door-frame, all arranged substantially as described.
3. The combination, with the casing and a hinged door or shutter, of a weather-strip attachment consisting of the recessed bracket D, rigidly secured to the door, the adjustable stop-plates secured to said bracket, the flap E, attached to the said bracket by springactuated hinges, the spring-plate F, secured to the end of flap, the cam G, secured to one of the door-jambs in the relation described to the spring-plate F, and the inclined flange B, secured to the other door-jamb, all constructed and adapted to operate substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES W. GIFT.
